Not saying that hardcore fish people don't go there. I'm saying that uninformed people mainly shop at animates. Hell, when I was new to fish keeping I went to animates and bought all my fish there. Knew hardly anything about the fish I bought. If I thought pacus would only grow to say, 6'', then I'd get one.

Alright p44.

My general observation is that more uninformed people will go to animates then specialised aquarium stores is based on a few things

-Animates has more outlets then the other specialised aquarium stores

-Animates has more people enter the store doors because it stocks more then just aquarium items and livestock.

-Animates has more advertising e.g. radio and tv

I'm sure that a lot of people will get their first tanks from there. Animates sells a lot of starter kits iirc.

I hadn't been to HFF till after I joined the forums and found out it was a good store.

Those pics you posted david are of small ones  Singapore + Vancouver aquariums have pacu WAY larger than that.

Yeah I saw some massive ones in the London Aquarium. I was looking for the usual pic I post in threads about pacu with a guy holding up one vertically that is way bigger than his torso, but couldn't find it. One of those things you have to see in person to appreciate eh.

problem is they will probably end up in stores anyway.

Eventually the importer will probably realise that no-one wants them, and they will grow. they have to go somewhere. They will either be sent as freebies (i once got sent redtail cigar sharks that i didnt ask for, could be a similar thing who knows) or they will list directly on trademe.

End result they will end up kept in tanks too small, just face it. yes its very unfortunate for the fish.

Apparently they taste really good! Are an especially good aquaculture option because they are vegetarian.

If that is the plan I see nothing wrong in growing one up out of interest and then eating it because it can't be kept forever.

Much the same as your average pet lamb.
