I am trying to guage interest in a club for us that could meet say once a month and then also join up with the rest of New Zealand, Please leave your interest here, I would also like to suggest then that we actually all get together and meet on Sunday the 24th of May, at 1.00pm, I have a great venue at my work place and can get it for us for nothing, this could be just the start of it. Please leave a response here, rather then pm me that way everyone can see if there is alot of interest, Thanks...

I am also interested. This has been tried before, what we need is someone commited to run a meeting and do orginizing every month. We even offered a place to hold it in Bulls so we could have a combined Wangaz and Palmy club.

It could be a good idea to restart the Palmerston Club just finding those commited people with free time to run it is the problem.

Yeah finding enough people with enough time to organise stuff, and also finding enough members to actually attend is a problem.. Last time we tried it we held the meeting here in Bulls (equal distance from palmy and wanganui) and there were a few people from Wanganui and Palmy, but once the meetings transferred to Palmy numbers died off.. Most of us local fish keepers know each other and see each other regularly anyway, but it would be good to meet new people..

Even if after the initial meeting it was decided to be held at a different venue each time , that could work as I have a van and dont mind transporting. I think these are the sort of things that would be discussed at our first meeting..

there are lots of us floating around that have tried to kick start it so i can always join in.

I tried last and we did dwindle numbers once we moved it to palmy but found most of the committed came from here anyway.

I know there is still a club account and library but am aware that it will be handed over only once the club has been running for a while and well (which is fair enough).

I had a newsletter that i sent out and wrote by myself every month about club meetings/notes about last time etc.

We even made a trip over to napier.

Tank crawls are nice too, then you get to meet all the family members :D

Bilbo is also in the process of setting up a email system for us to sell/help everyone locally too. (you will see a topic further down the list in this section)

Hope this all helps!

Well thats the sort of decisions that would be made there, it would be to see what we want from a club I guess...and even if its small it will be great.. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

That will be the hardest part, to decide on what it is that you want to do. This is something I have spent some considerable time trying to figure out in the past year so to kick you off here's what I have learnt to date, this applies to the Waikato club so I would guess it would be pretty close for you guys:

VENUE IS SUPER IMPORTANT!!!!!

The days of sitting in a dusty old hall sipping cold cups of tea are over, people want to be somewhere warm and comfortable.

It should have something to stimulate conversation and spark interest, whether it is a display tank or a breeding setup to tie people together and allows people to chip in their ideas and experiences.

ORGANISATION IS VITAL

People will be traveling and are on the whole very busy, the biggest turn off is to show up somewhere only to find the plan has changed or you forgot something important.

Plan well ahead of time, allow people time to book in, you will have to chase them up and make sure that they are very aware of dates and times, never just show up and play it by ear, it will turn to custard very fast as people try and push their own point of view.

If you have been chosen to lead then lead. You will know very quickly if you have chosen incorrectly just by watching peoples reactions, learn from it and make it better next time.

SHARING IS KEY

Give away live food cultures, batches of fry for people to grow out, plants whatever.

If you do this you will start to get some fantastic community feeling, offer any gear to club members first if you can.

I would suggest that you set a rule, If something is given freely it can only be passed on freely not sold. If you get given some fry to grow out, the next generation is fair game but if you intend to sell something that is given to you it is only fair that you check with the giver first.

I hope this helps, and I wish you well :bounce:

If you want to do a road trip or a joint visit...maybe a molly hunt?? let us know.

Its good to see we have the support of some of the "bigwigs" perhaps it is time to really give this thing a nudge and make something of it.

It does seem a shame that we have specialists in almost all areas of the hobby and no one really knows who knows what.

Perhaps a informal swap-meet or auction advertised through here and the local retailers might be a place to get some initial numbers?

Wanganui and Levin and even Masterton have some really good people to and it would be a shame to miss them out.

I would be keen.

Although last time the big problem for me was the fact that the meetings were in Palmerston all the time, and being able to find the funds to travel sometimes can be a bit hard. Also working six days a week makes it awkward, as I still have to spend time with my better half and do all the usual household stuff.

If we have a few from Wanganui traveling down, then maybe we could share the costs and car pool.

Id be keen to help where I can.

Simon
