Bruce
This was discussed at the recent FNZAS conference and it seems there is a review underway. I suspect it will reduce the variety of fish we have access to. I am not entirely convinced that we will be worse off, there seems to be a effort to find out what is available here in NZ, We as a club (HBAS) have started to document the types of fish we have as members. I am happy that we have this as a starting point but it definitely needs to go further. My personal feelings on the way the system should work is 1: Establish a list of allowed imports based on the fish that are here in NZ at present that are not harmful to the environment 2: Add to this list what are known to be safe for importation 3: Add fish on a case by case scenario. ie if an importer wants to import a certain fish then they apply to MAF for a licence to import the particular fish, providing MAF with species information. Shouldnt be too hard to work out if the fish is a threat or not in 99% of the cases MTCW anyway /Bruce
reef
having looked into adding new species of fish/coral to the allowable list i think it is very unlikly that MAF is going to allow new species, Any new species of fish etc needs to be approved by ERMA not maf as maf only police the allowable list not determin if new species are allowed. To get the species on the list it will cost thousands as you have to do the research and pay to get ERMA to process the information. The only way to can get items on the allowable list is to prove that they were in new zealand prior to july 1998, this is covered under section 26 of the HSNO act.(http://www.ermanz.govt.nz)
macka
I actually think there is now more fish available and sortly more will be taken of the prohobited list eg Flowerhorns etc .Asian arowanas where taken of the prohibited list last year and come to think of it a few cichlids as well, you only have to take a look around the LFS to see there is more variety available than ever before, just got to be in the right place at the right time. I actually thought MAF where looking at the fish that could live in temperate conditions like chinese high fins, minnows and some barbs, thats just what i heard
reef
flower horn is not allowed in the country, there is not such thing as a none allowable list , only a allowable list and you will find that the flower horn is not on the list. Maf dont make the decision on what is allowed in , it is done by ERMA.
Caryl
There is certainly a list of fish that are not allowed to be imported. It is put out by MAF (or whatever they call themselves these days)
Ira
Flowerhorns must be allowed, because they're here. I think MAF has an allowed list and anything that isn't on the list isn't allowed, plus as specific not allowed list, Seems a bit redundant. Hmmm, I thought I had those two bookmarked, but I guess not.
macka
What two species of fish are breed to make flowerhorns?, maybe those two fish are allowed into NZ, just a guess.
