Cheesejawa
Woke up this morning to find the heater in my 34litre had broken and it was down to 14 degrees! It was the worst possible time as there is about a foot of snow on the ground right now. I quickly did a water change with warm water and its now up to about 22. I have lost all 5 of my neons and the head and tail light tetra isnt looking good. I am very sad about their deaths. The heater is still broken I think so I need to keep the tank warm. Any things to do to keep the temperature up? I will turn the heater in the room on. firenzenz
Have you got a small plastic bottle that you can fill with warm/hot water and float that, put a blanket over tank then get to a pet shop.
Afrikan
Yeah I would do as firenzenz says 8)
Cheesejawa
The thermostat must be broken becuase now its just heating and heating. I will probably unplug it soon and just heat the room and do what firenzenz suggested. I will go to the LFS tommorow because its not exactly driving weather. Barrie
I dont know how many tanks you have but to me a pare heater is a must
supasi
I know how you feel Cheesejawa. I just got back from a four day holiday in Auckland, with a new tank for my Geo's. Unfortunately the heater came unplugged(im blaming the cat and cheap multibox from red shed).  Lost two Large Geos and one huge otto. Im not a happy chappy at the moment. Also for future reference, be very careful adding warm water to cold as the sudden change in temp can kill the already stressed fish. Better to do as mentioned above in previous post and wam gradually. Sorry for your loss
smidey
if its a 34 tank (small) i would put it in the hot water cupboard, that'll keep the temp up.
Cheesejawa
Ive replaced the departed neons with harlequin rasboras, hopefuly they will do a bit better.
Barrie
and did you buy a spare heater?
Barrie
I buy the English ones that come with a 5 year garentee... cost more but out of about 25 heaters, the only failure I have had was when my daughter broke it while catching fish
fattythecatty
Do you have a heater at the moment? I can lend you one until you buy a new one if you like?
Cheesejawa
Yes it goes But it dosent always heat when its supposed to and heats too much sometimes.
SpidersWeb
Get AquaOne, or Jager if you feel rich. Elite has done me well in the past as well. At all costs avoid Masterpet, and I've had problems with Jebo, and most AquaClears.
VinsonMassif
Yeah what Spidersweb said. If you have a foot of snow outside in winter you ought to have spare heaters for this kind of situation.
fattythecatty
It's hardly what I'd call a fish shop and hasn't been open in about 2 months.

fattythecatty
Actually, I went out there today and he was open which was great as we were getting low on fish food but $120 later we are well stocked and have 13 Neon tetra as well! But fish wise he has almost no stock so if you want anything you still have to go out of town. You wouldnt happen to have seen the price of heaters?
fattythecatty
Think they started @ $30, didn't pay too much attention, did notice the Jaeger was $66 but didn't notice the watts. What do you need? I've got 5 spare heaters here including 2 new 50w heaters that I'll probably never use as they're too small for my tanks. They're not the flashest brand but they would do you until you can afford a new one, better than using something unreliable that may freeze or cook your fish. Anyway, the offer is there. Cheesejawa
It is currently running on a 100w but they might be a bit overkill. I guess a 50w would be just enough.
