    black ghost

We have 2 and they are great pets, the best way to train them to feed from your hand is to give them treets like blood worms or ox heart from a feeding cone, so they learn that all the "good stuff" stays at the top. After a while (cupple of weeks) they will normally be first to the cone, then you start feeding with the hand. This has worked with both our bgk, and i hope it will work with others
  2. I know someone who uses a gutted piano as a tank stand, it fits a 4foot nicely
  3. well people, i am very embrassed to say that colin was right  , my female was a boy. On the bright side, at our local club auction someone was selling a male whitch i thought looked alot like a female , after thinking i couldent be THAT wrong twice, i brought it home, and they spawned first attempt, so now we have hundreds of lil betta fry    Thanks to all who replyed
  4. This looks like the place to ask for a book ref. for Apistogramma Trifasciata Thanks
  5. Thanks Dave for all your time you put into orginising the auction , and thanks to all that attended :hail:
  6. I got 5 not long ago (2m, 3f) and put them in with my BGK's, Angels and bolivan rams (was told it would be ok short term) until i set up a african tank, and i have a female holding with the ph of 6.5 and all seem to be happy .
  7. I have often thought of this but never done it. The method i would use\try is to cover the inside botom ot the tank with a thin layer of silicon, lay the heater wire in strips the length of the tank aprox 5-10cm apart, poaking the ends out one corner to the outside. Place a 5mm peace of glass cut to fit the inside of the tank on top of the wires before the silicon sets, then run a bead of silicon around the edge. there would be a thermostat in there for temp control but havent thought to much in depth about that, it would probably involve old heater parts. Hope this helps give you some ideas

    Glass lid

I got a oil-filled glass cutter from the local $2 shop Goes ok so far
  9. The tank is 45cm X 23cm with just over 10cm of soft water @ 27 degrese C. There is nothing in the tank except for a heater, a 11cm X 11cm Jar, a peace of java fern, a small clump of java moss and some ricca (which is what he was making his nests in in the com tank). The water was also taken out of the com tank with small daily/every other day water changes. As for the condition of the female she was very fat with her ovipositer showing. She was also showing her vertical bars. Can any one see what im doing wrong, or are the fish being stubborn
  10. I have been trying to breed this pair of fighters for a while now. It took him a little over a week to build a nest, and now ive let her out, hes ripping her to shreads. Shes been out 2 days now, and the bubbles have gone again. should i leave her in a bit longer (was thinking till sunday) to see what happens. or take her out to give her a rest. Any ideas would be great.
  11. Thanks  Not sure about the marble pattern, what am i looking for, i just thought he was a tri-colour.

    Hole in the head

We tryed the vets for Metronidazole, but they wouldent sell it to us unless they "seen" the fish with a $45 consalt fee , are there any products avalible from the LFS that i should be asking for. Is this Metronidazole harmful to other fish ie Scaleless, catfish??? Thanks Helen and Shane
  15. I have a blue ram with hole in the head, how do i treat this, i have melafix, fluke tabs, tonic salt. Is there any thing i need to buy tomorow. He is half of a good breeding pair so i want to do my best to save him Any advise asap would be welcomed Thanks in advance Helen and Shane
  16. Well done , just last week we lost a whole lot of week old free swimming blue rams, they where way too small for microworms and bbs, i was using liquafry, but i dont think they where getting it (in the back of a planted tank). Im just waiting for her to fatten up and lay again and we will try a few things diffrent. Ive just discovered i have a whole lot of cockatoo eggs to deal with as well. Once again well done and i hope you have more luck than we did

    Increasing GH

The GH in all my tanks is around 60ppm. Id like to know how to increase it, ive heard somthing about epsom salts but i have concerns about scailess fish ie. clown loach, bgk. I know some fish like soft water (like rams) but others also like harder water. Also my KH is testing at less than 10ppm, again how do i rase this and what should it be :-? Thanks Helen and Shane

    Dwarf Cichlids

I keep blue rams with apisto's and they are fine as long as the apisto's have plenty of caves. I have also seen bolivan rams and blue rams keept togeather with no problams just a note on blue rams, try to sorce locally breed fish because IMHO imported blues usually dont last more than a month
  20. I have had these two discus for about a week now and i think they have gill fluke. Symptoms are heavy, exaggerated breathing, and a thin clear film that extends past the gill plates when they breath. I am going to treet with fluke tabs (unless anyone here thinks otherwise) but was wondering wether to treet the tank they are in or put them into another tank for treetment. The reason why i ask is because the tank they are in has alot of young bn's and a coupple of panda cory's, and there is another post on this site that states that fluke tabs are toxic to these fish. Any advice will be greatly appreicated
  21. Great to hear thoes kribs are doing well Welcome to the site. If you want some nice young jewls, let us know..
  22. Thanks guys, i think i will give Alan's idea a try, will let you all know how it goes.
  23. Today our the bottom of our 300l tank cracked. When we got the tank it had a crack in it, and i repaired it by siliconing a glass over the top of it, and it worked fine...... until now. Im going to replace the bottom pane, but i was wondering if there is any need to strip the whole thing down, or could i take the bottom off, clean it up and silicon the new glass on. And what thickness would any one recomend for a 120x50x50. Thank god for MTS
  24. Does this have any affect on the media???
