  1. I have had many pms lately re the fish/coral list. The process to get new fish added to the list is a very onerous process. To get a fish approved it first has to be approved by ERMA and then by MAF, You could be looking at 2-5 years as MAF and ERMA have informed me that it is not a priority for them. Any new species not on this revised list would require a risk assessment under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act, 1996 which is undertaken by the Environmental Risk Management Authority Once approved by ERMA, MAF would then need to conduct a risk assessment under the Biosecurity Act to also ensure that any pathogens potentially carried by the new species are adequately managed on importation The current list we have was done by me with the help of fnzas and a few importers based on what came in over the last few years. Hopes it answers some questions.

    bristleworms

Could be Eurythoe sp. fire worm. good for your tank as it will eat the waste in your tank. Should be no problem with corals.

    Bird nose wrasse

Bird nose wrasse is reef safe apart from clams. A four foot tank would be ok,
  8. Try joes juice, no need to get a needle, just get close and it will kill them. You might have to do it a few times.
  9. Still find it hard to believe that levels would go that high, i doubt the live rock will cause high levels, Sure bacteria will die but unlikly it will cause ammonia in a few day. Did you add new water after the move or during the move? How long since the move?
  10. To the eye it might be clean. however it is not good enough for reef tanks, I had someone measure the TDS of christchurch water and it is far to high in nutrients, even higher than my rain water tank.

    advice please!

Not to sure about that, any filter will convert ammonia to nitrate, The problem with canister filters is that dirt gets trapped and breaks down thus adding organics to the aquarium. Its a bit like the the myth that bio balls are nitrate factors.

    advice please!

No need to have a canister filter, long term they collect dirt and it breaks down to pollute the tank. All you need is some rock and a good protein skimmer. When setting up the tank put the rock in first and then add the sand only to the front of the tank. here is some info on di / ro http://fins.actwin.com/reefkeepers/reefkeeper1.html
