    cyano

cyno normally appears in tanks that use natural sea water for some reason. I have had a very small amout of cyno in a few spots some time ago but this was due to overfeeding the fish. do you use natural seawater???

that is a high nitrate level. How high is you phostphate level?? What is on your tank? , how mant fish
  3. should not be a problem

There is a huge differance between t5 & normal flouros. A 4FT t5 is 54w, normal flouro is 36W. With t5 you can keep every coral including acropora. IRA if you put a metal halide in your hood you could crack the cover glass. also metal halides have to be 300mm above the water. this tank is using t5s only, great hard coral tank http://www.korallenriff.de/Mohr/

    new tank holes

agree jetski. maybe it could be moved to the boring section.

    new tank holes

just go one 50mm, then reduce it to 40mm, this will give you better options if you want to increase the flow rate in the future.

late night for you tonight jetski.
  8. How not to plumb a tank. What a mess.
  9. The set up looks nice however seems very complicated for a 5ft tank. Why not just have 1 large sump so that the skimmer can get more water contact so it can skim better, simply is better. what will happen if the pipe gets blocked from the 4ft sump to the 3 foot sump.??/

IRA, T5 is the way to go for you. most coral will be fine under t5, even acropora will do well. Metal halide for your hood is not really a goer if you are going to keep it under your existing hood.
  11. i fail to see how two holes on the side is more risky that the bottom? The biggest and best reef is in my house and still going after two years with two holes on the side .
  12. Having quite a bit of experience in the glass industry, I sleep well at night knowing I have no holes at the bottom of my tank. Putting two pieces of glass together is even worse. Glass against Glass is very dangerous, unless you are going to put silicon in between, however the cost of the silicon is high. 15mm glass will be ok, costs more but much safer. Plumbing could be a problem? The threads on the plumbing might not fit through the thickness of the glass.
  13. do in once and do it right the first time, will cost less in the long run. plumbing is bloody expensive.
  14. Pies, with all those holes at the bottom of the tank is surly very risky. If one hole cracks then it will split the bottom glass. Also all that piping and pump. If it leaks it could drain the whole tank. Simply is best and safer. I think placing one stream at the bottom next to the overflow should be enough to circulate the bottom
  15. chimera you are always look for cheap stuff. This would be ideal for your tank.
  16. if it is eating then it will be fine, needs to be feed lots of greens twice a day. In future you should do some research on the fish you are buying. there is lots of info on the net.
  17. IT should not have been sold to you as it is a hard fish to keep., The only way you are going to catch it is by removing some of your rocks and then try to net it. Maybe you could ask the shop that sold it to you to come and catch it, since it is their mistake and it should not have been sold to you.
  18. did you purchase it from a shop? If you did i would take it back as they should have given you better advice as they are hard to keep and they need a lot of feeding. actually it would be good to keep them in a small tank so you can fatten them up and clean any excess food.
  19. Its total crap, even a berlin skimmer is better.

    Auto top-up?

test the out flow and see if you get a phostphate reading. also test your tank.

what about the bacteria from bird droppings. tank water has very nasty bactaria. so for a FO tank it is very important to filter the water. however RO is out as it waste 80% of the water

    Auto top-up?

having course media means it will disolve quicker as you get better water movment in the reactor. If the media of a calcium reactor is too fine it could block the reactor as the co2 will build up. It is good to get large water flows in calcium reactors.

    Auto top-up?

Interesting design, The media is very fine. it is better to get bigger media in a reactor so you get a fast flow so the calcium media gets better contact with the co2, I can see this reactor producing lots of phostphates . How you done a test with a phostphate test kit to see how high it is.

Does not make sense, You have purchase some good equipment for your tank and now your are going to top up with dirty water loaded with bactaria and organics.
