  1. They are not the same.
  2. no doubt they do grow faster, however keeping the water warm also has a down side as bactarial problems can happen quicker

    Lighting

arcadia are not that good, they look nice, but the ballst and bulbs are second rate. ballast are about $100, blue narva blues are about $60.
  4. awesome clowns , might try to get some
  5. Halimeda macroalgae causes coral disease: An algae often grown in the reef tank has been found to cause a disease in some forms of coral. According to new research by published in next month's issue of the journal Ecology Letters, direct contact with the macroalgae Halimeda opuntia can trigger a virulent disease called white plague type II. Nugues, Smith, Hooidonk, Seabra and Bak, claim that white plague type II, which has caused widespread deaths in Caribbean corals, often occurs simultaneously with heavy growths of macroalgae. To test their hypothesis, the scientists exposed the hard coral Montastraea faveolata to the algae. Some of those exposed to H. opuntia developed the disease, while those that were unexposed did not. The disease is believed to be caused by a bacterium called Aurantimonas coralicida. This was found to be present on the macroalgae, both near to, and far away from diseased corals, indicating that it acts as a reservoir for the disease. The team believes that macroalgae are responsible for many coral wipeouts and suggest controlling macroalgae in order to save corals from white plague. The algae is often sold as an ornamental macroalgae for the reef aquarium, however, on the basis of this research it may perhaps be wise to remove it from your aquarium now. For more details see the paper: Maggy M. Nugues, Garriet W. Smith, Ruben J. Hooidonk, Maria, I. Seabra, Rolf P. and M. Bak (2004) - Algal contact as a trigger for coral disease. Pearl Bubbles

    Pearl corals come in green,
  7. Does it really matter? They can go in a container, bucket, milk bottle what ever.
  8. My temp is about 25-26 in the winter and 26-29c, in the summer. Does not seem a problem, when the temp gets to 29c the coral look fantastic. The other day I must have accidentally bumped the controller in the quarantine and the temp went to 28c ,normally 25c. The corals looked fantastic, overseas some hobbyist keep the temp at 29-30c. AT higher temp corals do grow quicker. I think it is a good idea to keep tanks at about 26c, so in summer the variance will not be as much when the temp goes to 29c.
  9. No fish are breed in captivity that we receive, all wild . If breed you would be paying double the price.
  10. thought wrong? have not used Blv for sometime
  11. Right, Have not got time to add acid to my tank daily. Colour change is caused by low nitrates and phostphates. The addition of reef solution from ecosystem has also made the differance due to the minerals and iron in it. Nothing to do with lighting. just a fad. I run a quarantine facility and i see how the true colour of corals are when they arrive. after 2-3 weeks there is dramatic colour change to a more brownie colour due to the high nitates in the system. The acropora tank also has 400w and the corals still go brown.

post a pic? got too many frags already thanks.
  14. Ph = 7.9- 8.10 Salinity = 1.025 refractometer Nitrates = .10 ppm (salifert test kit) Phosphates = .01 ppm (salifert test kit) Magnesium = 1250ppm (salifert test kit) Calcium = 420ppm (salifert test kit) KH = 8.15 (salifert test kit)
  15. I use 14000k bulbs with t5s, This is unlikly caused my coral to change colours as they were changing colour previuosly under 14000k 250w bulbs, some ohotos are more blue because they have the t5s going. without t5s i get better photos.
  16. My lighting is 4x400w 14k coralvue bulbs plus 12x54w t5s.

    Shrimps missing

Cleaner and blood red shrimp normally die when not acclimated properly. It’s happened a few times, lost about 50 in a week once. They normally die over a week. But then again using Takapuna seawater could be a problem,

    Any zeovit tank photos yet??
  19. you must wonder why they are so cheap and why he cant tell u what brand they are?? My opinion, they will be crap. especially when they sell the others for $60usd plus. You need to know what brand they are as you cant just run any bulb on any ballast. Us bulbs dont have ignitors in them and Euro bulbs do.
  20. what brand are the cheap bulbs??
  21. Can’t agree more, really annoying with someone always starts a new thread when an existing one is available.

I am sure this should go into a beginner section.
  23. Having a beginner section and a few others like diy will make it easier to find posts/information as at the moment the posts are growing and it is hard to go and back track and find all the info. The saltwater section is going to get bigger than the freshwater section the way it is going. We are only interested in adding a few more sections. if everyone paid five dollars to join it would help with upkeep.
