layton. one good thing to build in the computer would be .. if the temp rises say above 28c then the unit should turn off the metal halides, and when the temp goes below say 27c then the halides should turn on again.

    Nitrates Gone!

Have used zeovit and found that you have to do weekly water changes otherwise the tank gets to much nutrients. zeofood must have some trace elements and iron in it. When I did not do weekly water changes I found algae starting to grow and my rocks were going dark. Speaking to friends in Germany who use zeovit claim there is no benefit for low stocking tanks and soft corals, as rowaphos/salifert phosphate removes are more efficient in removing phosphates and nitrate is not a problem in low stocking tanks. However zeovit might add a coating to acropora which may help produce the nice colours. Lots of the nice acropora tanks on the net don’t use zeovit and still have fantastic colours so Personally I think a good skimmer/lighting and good water control will produce the same effect as zeovit or zeobiobak . Best is to try and decide for yourselves if you get any benefit. Also beware don’t overdose as the iron in zeovit will make algae grow very well so recommend using carbon and a phosphate remover.

I don’t think a skimmer is as simply as slapping a piece of plastic together. Well it would look easy to most inexperience reefers. The following items are critical in skimmer design: The water flow rate through the skimmer The height of the skimmer The amount of air pumped into the reaction chamber of the skimmer The diameter of the skimmer So I don’t think making a one off is going to get you a very efficient skimmer as most quality manufactures have done a lot of testing before they came up with the perfect model. make a mistake when building a skimmer, then it will cost more as buying parts is not cheap.

I would not class my skimmer as diy as it was not build by me and was custom build . really cant see any diy person building it, cost $3000 without labour, could have purchased a brand name skimmer for less. Diy is ok if you are skilled in acrylic as it is not easy to glue tubing. And if you are new to the hobby and have not used various skimmers, lights etc then it is hard to really understand how the equipment should function. Water quality is so important in keeping fish/coral I cant see the point of doing half a job, it is better to get things spot on and save money by not losing fish/coral . FISH/coral come from nutrient poor water so if water quality is not excellant then fish will get stressed and diseases will appear. I think big skimmers are important as it give you a much better margin of error in terms of getting you water quality up. ANY skimmer will skim, however a undersized skimmer will leave to much disolved organics in the water which will cause problems due to high organic load. Great book to get is THE MODERN REEF AQUARIUM BY SVEN/FOSSA

genarally the modern way for a reef tank is huge skimmer heaps of rock metal halides lights and thats it, dont need bio balls, canister filter. the rock in a reef tank will have bacteria attached which will break down ammonia/nitrite/nitrate and the skimmer will remove most organics befor it can pollute the tank. dont really diy as it works out more expensive due to errors in design and if its going to cost $600 to build a skimmer verses $800 to buy, i would rather spend the extra dollars to get something that is going to look good and work.

    Nitrates Gone!

i was just about to try putting sugar in my tank when i thought i will put vodka in my tank and see if this would work as most of the germans are dosing it. started on my small 100L tank. nitrate is about 80 ppm and phostphates 3ppm, very high. i put in 5ml of vodka and will increase dosage by 1 ml per day. i will post results every two days. my reef tank readings today were not to bad at all. nitraye is 5ppm and phostphates zero, yep 0 which is fantastic, salifert phostphate killer sure works.

    HARD CORAL PICS

my seem to grow well with medium light, they dont get alot of current so this might be why they are not doing well in your tank. have you tried to put them between too larger corals so that they get shaded from the current?

i cant image redwoods display tank looking anywhere near the quality of the tanks in this forum. so how can they be awesome? i bet they run a berlin skimmer on their reef tank.

    I'm Back...

My philosophy is due it right the first time as this will save you money because you wont have to upgrade. Most important part is a decent skimmer & lighting and water movement. Best is to do a budget and then borrow the money from the bank and pay it off. I have seen so many people skimp on getting decent equipment and then upgrade because the equipment is too small or wont do the job. Get a very good book and learn then go and set up the tank, beware of getting to much info on the net as not all the information is correct. Best book to get is THE MODERN CORAL REEF AQUARIUM by svein fossa and alf nilsen
  19. i try to keep my kh at 2.5-3 mgl if you go too high then it is hard to balance calcium as it will fall. Read some german articles which state that too high a kh could cause RTN.
