  1. Gaudy...huh Joe Ira, I checked at the lfs and they don't have the dwarf cockatoo cichlids. Thanks, Caper
  2. Ira, I see you haven't changed a bit... I've missed this place! Anyway, back to the pots. Do they always have to be broken in 2 or is this just a preference thing? Are they hard to break/split and what would you use? Thanks, Caper
  3. Thanks Ira! I just did a google on dwarf cockatoo cichlids. Just did a fast read and does appear that they can go in a community tank (I didn't mean that you wouldn't have known that, duh). I have to check to see if the store has them. If they do (taking a run out today), I'll be back with more questions and read up more on them...now don't everyone run and hide JOE...see this is one of the reasons I love this place...everyone always so helpful, kind, and lots of experience! ...oh, and I always managed to get a good laugh and lots of smiles! Caper
  4. Geepers...forgot to click on submit AGAIN!  Not tons of fish where I live Joe. Only 1 pet store with fish, but more variety than I've seen here ever! It must be open 3 years now (another did open not long after but it closed recently ). When I first started, the pet store that had fish (closed) didn't offer enough information in my opinion. The only other place with fish was WalMart (they don't have fish anymore). Therefore, I started browsing the net. Didn't know what a forum was :dunno: Just happened to find this site and as they say, rest is history! Due to some life "issues" haven't been here in ages...but great to be back. I just never thought to look for a Canadian forum...maybe someday! Take care, Caper
  5. Sorry for your loss...did you have the turtle a long time? Take care, Caper
  6. Now, that this tank is started I'll have to take a good look to see what fish the lfs has! Joe, I would like "colourful" for sure, says she who purchased 4 red wag platties, duh  But, yes I was thinking of guppies. I don't know if they have rasboras. Way back when, I think I asked if I could have an all male tank and I think I was told yes. So, the 4 platties are males. No fry for me Caryl unless it's something in a frying pan! Egg bearers, as least I don't see the eggs! I will ask here lots. When I got the red eye tetras, I had to get another tank because I had guppies and discovered they were fin nipping! Thanks all Caper

    Water change!

Hi Ira! I was just curious to get opions on this Ira. I just estimate. How often would you do "halfish" Ira? Just curious :spop: How are you? I've been looking at various posts...and you are still as funny as ever! Take care...and thanks, Caper
  8. Sad...but I think it is...mmm, amazing for the lack of a better term! Sorry for your loss! Caper

    Water change!

Oh fuddle, I can't find the other post...hmm, maybe I forget to select "submit" again  Thanks livingart...it's great to be back. I never stopped. I still have 3 tanks up and running (a 55 gallon still NOT set up ) GrahamC, I have never gone that long without doing a water change. I just don't do them weekly like I did in the past. I have had tanks for 7 years and probably stopped testing maybe 1 to 2 years ago. Thanks, Caper

    Water change!

Missed something here! So, do you think I should be testing for nitrates because I do not have real plants???? Caper
  11. HAPPY EASTER TO YOU ALL! Oh, Caryl...I do like your explanation on the calories issues... :sml1:
  12. Thanks livingart! I'm trying to read up on things again even plants...LOLOLOLOL. But with that said, I thought they ALWAYS had to be planted in the tank! Take care, Caper

    Water change!

Thanks all  Duh...the subject was supposed to be "water" not "what" I can see I will be using this thingy alot  HI LIVINGART...how are you???????? I've always just used my eye :smln: and just estimated! I was just curious if this way was any better. Yes, I'm keeping a close eye on this tank since it was fishless since before Christmas. Prior to this because I rarely got new fish (only to replace) and things never seemed to change in years (parameters), I stopped testing and did spread out my water changes. I did keep the tanks well understocked. Thanks, Caper
  14. Thanks GrahamC! But don't the plants have to be removed from the pots and planted in order to survive??? Caper
  15. Thanks all ..hehe love these things! ichthus: I'm in no rush. Ammonia was a definite .25 so did a water change today! Will keep an eye on this. I'm guessing the tank is going through maybe a mini cylce even with the added stuff from other tank. So, I will take my time and try to stay away from the lfs joe: The ornaments in this tank were Christmas presents from my son and his girlfriend:) I would kind of, sort of...like to try real plants now that we have pet store that has them. But, unless someone physically comes here and shows me what to do, it probably will not happen. This is an issue I've been debating with myself for 7 years now :nilly: :nilly: Thanks again folks Caper
  16. Hi All! Found measuring tape Caryl  Dimensions: 30" long; 19" tall; 12" wide - this is the tank in the "set up tank questions" I previously posted. Presently: only 4 red wag platies. pH - approximate 7.6 (highest the test kit will read) - but did have it tested a lfs and will again to see what reading they get (I forget what they got before but I DO remember he said it was high) I do not keep real plants, yah I know me bad  Any suggestions on other fishies I can put in. Previously didn't have a lfs locally so there is a bit more to choose from, but with that said I know I'm limited with tank size and still on the fence about the pH. (see other post when lfs said red eye tetras wouldn't survive in my pH but have had them for a few years now). Take care, Caper

    Water change!

Hi all! Long time since been here but I do remember you cannot post directly from other sites with acknowledging where you go the info from. Unfortunately, I did not write it down and cannot find it, yet. With that said, if I'm doing something wrong on this post, will the powers that be remove, please! When doing a water change (25%ish), I always just estimate by sight. When browsing the net the other night, I found a place (don't remember where  ) that gave a fast way to estimate was to measure your water level and mulitiply it by, I think it was using 20% change they were using. Anyway, so for example if water level is approximately 16", multiply it by 20%...which is according to the site is approximately 3 inches. Just looking for opinions if this is a good way to get an approximate way to know???? Thanks...have a great day! Caper

    Hi from Kapiti

Hello! You will certainly get lots of help here...ppl...are awesome! Take care & have fun! Caper
  19. That's it blueether THANKS!
  20. Hi! :happy1: Fishkeeping is a great addiction though isn't it! Take care, Caper
  21. Thank Caryl  It's been so long I tested and so long since I've been on here; I feel like I'm starting all over again!
  22. Hmmm...I thought I replied to this last night! Maybe I forgot to submit :dunno: Thank you Caryl and GrahamC Still didn't find mearsuring tape Caryl. It's just over a week since the tank was set back up. I'm still testing every second day. Last night the ammonia appeared to have a slight increase not 0 but not .25. So I did a small water change. Tested again today; ammonia seemed to be down closer to the 0. Because it was not up, I didn't do a water change. I will test again tomorrow. Except when you sent me the nitrite kit Caryl, the only test kits I had when I first started was pH, ammonia, and nitrate. So I might go get a nitrate test kit. I must go search on here about water changes during cycling. I don't want to take out too much right?????? GrahamC, I do not have real plants in my tanks. After 7 years of having tanks, I'm still not ready to try real plants. I do like the clear water in my tanks, so I'll have to think about the carbon. GrahamC, I really get lost in the chemicals and such. Regarding the osmotic pressure, in simpler terms does that mean hard water versus soft water??? Wish I remembered my high school chemistry, oh but too many years ago  Thanks again, Caper
  23. I have 4 peppered corys in a 10 gallon tank. They like to hide, I call them my scaredy cats! But occasionally, when they think I am not looking, I see them swimming up and about as opposed to always being on the bottom. Take care, Caper
