  1. Okay...I cleaned the filter today but the water is still trickling down same side as the intake tube. I didn't touch the filters though...the bio filter is really scummy in the 29 gallon (not in the 10)...but just swishing it in tank water isn't getting rid of the scum...any other suggestions on how I can clean it without ruining it???? The carbon filter is new so that should be ok. 1) So could the build up on the bio filter be causing this to happen? 2) Could it be the reason that the tank isn't clear? Thanks for all the help
  2. The water is starting to come down...where the intake tube is...the other filter doesn't do that. Shouldn't the water be only flowing back in on the one side????? Darn, can't remember if its always been like that...see, I'm short so have to stand on tippy toes to see it!
  3. I don't have live plants...cluck, cluck, too chicken at moment   But you will need lights for live plants.
  4. I find that my filter in the 29 gallon is like that, more so at the top. I never saw it that bad until the power outage a couple of weeks ago. It's on the bio filter which I only swish in tank water (that has been vacuumed out  ). But lately it still seems to be quite yucky! But, as posted in another thread, something not right with my filter so maybe that is why. How do you clean that without upsetting the bacteria thingy? Swishing doesn't take it off.
  5. Hi Slash...introduce yourself in the beginner's section! Those who have the kind of fish that you do will be able to advise you on whether they are jumpers (need lid for sure then ) But do you have lighting for your tank? My lights are in the hoods of my tanks.
  6. Thanks Ira...thought I missed you! Ok...cleaned out filter! Here are pics: Both filters are Aqua-Tech, 10 gallon is Aqua Tech 5-15; 29 gallon is Aqua Tech 20-40. 10 gallon - see around intake tube no water! 29 gallon - water around intake tube, slowly starting to trickle down again! Any suggestions! I wanted to draw lines around like I saw you folks too...haven't figured out how to do that, must play some more with pics
  7. Hi all The water in the 29 gallon tank is cloudy not too bad but not clear (10 gallon is crystal clear). Checked: ammonia - 0 nitrites - 0 pH - between 7.2 & 7.6 BUT, I'd say maybe the last few days, I can hear the water from the filter which I don't usually hear unless I'm right by it & even then not much noise at all. ANYWAY, I just checked and where the intake tube sits...going into the filter....the water is coming out there just like it does on the....ah, side it's supposed to :-? Could this have anything to do with the water not coming clear???? I'm going to take it apart and see what happens. Oh, hears hoping that it doesn't stop working altogether
  8. So, have my pics been too big as well.. .like Deb, I don't know how to resize them..will read later how to do so. Oh...just found out my pics are 640x480...same as yours Caryl so they must be ok, huh?
  9. Darn, did something wrong and didn't post...here goes again!  OK...I know I should know this by now...but have been doing some reading and well, kinda confused   When I first started this wonderful hobby, once a month I would give my tank a really thorough vacuuming. Remove everything too! Now, I usually just vacuum the "top" layer so to speak, except on the edges if its really dirty looking. So, question is: should tanks get a thorough vacuuming once in awhile? If yes, time frame for major vacuuming? If not, why not? Geesh, hope you know what I'm asking...brain not functioning :-? :-? :-?
  10. Yes, remove your carbon...when treating fish the carbon should always be removed or else it absorbs the medication...am I right folks???

  19. I was reading on the net and it suggested they be fed wafers and vegies??? What do you folks recommend? I thought I'd add....I don't feed my ottos anything, when I first bought them I did try wafers but they weren't interested. Should they be getting something in the vegie line?? My ottos are in with my goldfish and once a week they get fed peas.
  20. Thanks Melanie...I just read your other post...hope your fishy will be ok
  21. My minnow isn't quite back to the same color as the other one...but he is no where near as pale as he was the other night.
