    Dropsy

I did a picture search on dropsy and these pictures best showed what my fish looked like as to body proportions, scales sticking out. I hope this helps others out there to identify this problem. As for "how" they get it no one really knows by the looks of it. As the lady said at the pet store, its like cancer. Some people get it and some won't and we will never know why.

    Dropsy

Yes Caper I am the one that had the baby. He will be 3 weeks old tomorrow. With the fish that had dropsy its belly was so large that I thought it was going to burst yet the pregnancy spot was very small. When you look at a fish from the top (depending on what type of course) normaly a fish should look something like a skinny tear drop. Well this fish that had dropsy looked like a big fat ball with its tail out the end. It was sitting at the top and flapping its fins about like it was doing a pregnancy waddle. Basicly it was flapping both fins to stay straight. Wished my photos came out better then I could of showen you exactly what it looked like.

    Dropsy

Well the fish that I got rid of today that had dropsy was very easily visible. She was real fat and serioulsy looked like a pinecone with a tail and fins. As bad as the disease is I am glad that guppies are not that expensive to replace!! I tried to take a photo of the fish before disposing of it but I didn't bother to check the photos before disposing of the fish and realised that all the pictures were blury and no good lol

    Dropsy

I have got a female guppy which is all swolen up (looks pregnant but isn't) and her scales about her tummy are all lifted and from the top looking down on her, her scales are really lifted like a pinecone. I have been told that when it is at the point to be dignosed its normaly to late for that fish. What are my chances of the other guppies catching this horrible disease?
  5. suphew thanks a heaps for the info. I will be looking into it this afternoon when the sun is out and things ain't so frozen here! Flippen freezing -3 this morning! brrrrrrrr
  6. Hey there maxy. I have seen the same thing with East Rd Pets as I was told their clown loaches were one price (when I was looking for an algae eater) and when I went back a few days later they were twice the price! Seems weird tho.
  7. When I take the base off the filter (compartment that holds the foam) there is a flat foot kinda thing which I guess is to stop the foam from being sucked up into the inlet. Apart from that nothing else comes apart on the filter that I can see. I will take it out of the tank and have a good go over it in a bucket of water and see how much I can clean out. The filter was with the tank when I brought it in easter so its not that old. Cheers for your comments.
  8. I have an Aqua One Tornado Power Filter. Its a long skinny box that sits in the back corner of the tank (can be seen in some of my photos, grey and black box). I have noticed over the last two days that it is humming a lot louder than normal. I have cleaned it and its still very loud. Its even louder than the pump! Is this a sign that the motor is dying and time for a replacement or do they just get loud after a period of time but still work fine? Lost and looking at trademe for a filter lol
  9. Can anyone tell me about the up keep of these fish?? I saw a real nice bright yellow one that was showing off at the store and thought that it would be something different to try. I won't be adding it to my guppy tank as I will eventually look into another tank all together depending on if the hubby will let me and once we have brought a house (with in the next yr hopefully) What water conditions do they require and are they hard to breed? cheers
  10. WOW maxy your lucky! I am not allowed any more tanks and I only got the 1!! lol Maybe when we manage to buy our own home I might be allowed more hehehe........*dozes off into la la land*....... hmmmm maybe a sailfin or tetra tank would be cool BTW Maxy how often do you stop in at East Rd Pets?? I am there pretty much every week lol can't help myself and I just gotta look at the new fishies they get in I am currently waiting on them to get their new load of plants in as I want more variety for the tank
  11. they were just sold as bristle nose so I have no idea what actual family it comes from apart from BN's lol I have been watching it over the last couple of days and its taken to the rock cave and I have seen it come out to feed and seen marks in the algae on the rock which is a good sign I guess. Guess it was just stressed when I put it in the tank but it seems all happy and fine now
  12. ohhhhh noooooo!!! Were you refulling the tank at the time and forgot that the water was running?? Might be a sign of tooo many tanks! lol
  13. I have got a new bristlenose since my other one died with in a week yet water was tested and all fine. I had the pet store test my water a few days before getting the fish and I would like to know what are the signs of stress so I can try and get it sorted before it got to far out of hand. When I got it I let it float for a good legenth of time before putting it into the tank. I have cuecumber this time and there is currently a piece in the tank (sat in water overnight) which I will leave there till tomorrow morning. Just like my first BN this one looks like its skin has gone all rough. Like goose bumbs I guess. No obvious marks, scrapes, cuts visible or anything just on its lower half of the body/tail it looks as if the scales are all slightly raised to give a rough appearence. Wether its just a camoflarge thing I don't know but would like to know what are the signs of stress. Cheers

    Bristlenose Pic

Brought me a new bristlenose today. Its a little bigger than my first one and had water test done and all come up perfectly fine. I will try and get a picture of it as soon as possible. I have just released it into the tank and its swimming about like its backside is on fire lol but I hope it will settle down soon. I don't want to have happen last time again. But time will tell

    Flushing fish

lol misnoma now thats a new one!

    Flushing fish

I have also been puzzled by this myself and I have asked my husband about it (plumber). Flushing a fish has no chance of spreading disease or surviving due to... 1. the strong content of what is in the sewers there is no way it can survive. 2. the sewerage goes through a processing plant before it goes anywhere. 3. anything flushed down the loo NEVER reaches any main water supply/stream. So with all that in mind I am guessing that its pretty safe to flush dead/dying fish down the loo with out the worry of contamination. If you happen to be on a farm then you are even more safe because all waste goes into a septic tank which has no chance of accessing main water ways Just thought I would share that with you all
  17. Hi Warren and welcome. An update for you Maxy. I have had my baby boy (4 weeks early) but he is doing well and so are my fish for the few days I was up in hospital. LOL I have to say I was more worried about my fish more than anything lol, who was going to feed them, who to blame if any die, whos going to watch out for babies, whos going to catch the babies and blah blah blah lol but its all good and they are still all alive Since getting the tank I have only had 2 fish die, (1 put down) so I feel that I am doing pretty good and I have had 3 drops of fry since easter weekend (when I first started). Let me know how your going Maxy and Warren and good luck
  18. what sort of problem does it have?? I have noticed that over the last week my better looking male guppies back has become more and more bent and it looks like he is struggling to keep his tail moving and is really losing energy just to stay still. His back has gone beyond a 45* angle and his scales on his tail only (from bend down) have become all rough and lifted yet there is nothing under the scales and all of my other fish seem 100% fine. I noticed a slight bend in his back when I first got him but also read that some guppies go like that and can still be fine but I am also wondering if he could be comming to the end of his life as he has never been as active (mating wise) as the other one so I am guessing he is much older than my other two males. As I mentioned above all my other fish are totaly fine and swim around him and all sorts but over the weekend I have noticed that his back has become worse and worse and he is always in one corner just sitting there doing nothing so I guess its just one of thoes things that you can't help. Hes got more colour in his upper body compaired to my other 3/4 black male (splash of blue and orange) but nothing last forever.
  19. Thoes pictures are awesome and that male is even better. *if only my hubby looked that good   * He would make some lovely babies
  20. Being new to the whole tropical tank thing I can't really suggest anything apart from maybe looking at planetcatfish.com They will probably have a lot of info there for your specific breed of BN's as I noticed that some require different needs than others Worth a try anyway.
  21. Hi there Heni. I am from invercargill and I to have not long been in the fish business but boy is it a lot of fun  I didnt' do what all these other people suggested (then again I wasn't registered with the site then). I had set my tank up and turned everything on and left it for a week then I added 6 guppies which I still have today. I don't know if it was just pure dumb luck or what but 3 days later I had babies so something must of been going right. My tank has been up for a month now and I have since added another trio (1M,2F) to the tank and are still having babies!!. I am sure that if you take your time and patience (hard I know) that all will turn out fine Good luck with your tank and welcome to such awesome forums
  22. you could try by looking about the bottom of the tank, behind ornaments and in with the plants for small swimming things lol. I noticed this the first time my guppy droped her fry. Yet she still looked fat but droped the rest about 2 days later. If you manage to find any you could put them into another tank or into a breeding trap. It all depends on how many you can find and how many you can catch. Apart from that if you got plenty of small leaved plants in your tank I am sure you will find that some will survive. I saved 10 of mine yet I still had another 5 in the tank that have managed to survive with out the adults eating them. Don't know if that helps any. Apart from that there is a lot of information on the net about guppy fry and things. Hope that helps kinda lol :-?
  23. LOL Mystic. Well here comes another question. I have noticed that my new male is picking on one of my new females allllll the time. He isn't interested in any of the other females and none of the other males are interested in this one female. Would it be wise for me to take the male out and put him in the breeding trap (this male is a lot smaller than my others) for the night to let her have a break? I don't want this beautiful female to die due to stress over Male Harrassment  He is always trying to mate with her and only her. Don't know what to do about it really. Cheers for your thoughts.
  24. **gets a super sized chair with all sided locking system so Mystic can't fall off no more** have to say I agree tho lol black has never been slimming on me lol. Then again I ain't exactly slim either lol
