Oh and for further reading here is the site that I got this info off. There is also some more info there about livebeares and this problem. Apparently Red Ramshorn snails worked to See Snails are not just a pest

This is what I got off the net to cure it. It was actualy tested by the guy himself. ****Cure: "Add one teaspoonful of vinegar to every two gallons of water in the tank. Concentration may be increased". I started off at the suggested rate amount of white vinegar, one teaspoonful to 2 gallons. The fish appeared to be all right but the Hydra were uncomfortable and retracted into squat blobs of a greyish colour and some fell to the aquarium bottom. Was this chemicial warfare going to be effictive? I increased the strength to double that recommended. I.e. by adding another teaspoonful per gallon, the mixture ratio was noe 1 teaspoonful per 1 gallon. It definitely worked but after a day or so the water went cloudy and requireed a water change for several days until the water clarity was restored. This cure worked in the stronger solution. I now used this solution in tanks 1 -5. Score total victory for me. I wish this story had a happy ending but last week I noticed a few isolated Hydra back in two tanks… you may think you are safe now that the Aliens have been conquered as well as the Body Snatchers also the Creature from The Black Lagoon…. But beware the HYDRA are coming. In fact they might already be in your tanks, hiding.**** I know that it would require a lot of water changes afterwards but if it won't harm the fish then its worth it to get rid of the hydra. Wasn't to sure on how quickly you were seeking a responce so I have been searching since 6.30am lol What....... its not like anyone else is awake at this hour in my house

I have currently got two layers of thick stocking over it and it still didn't slow down so my husband put a button up in the filter outlet into the box up top which has restricted the water flow nicely. I don't really want to use it now for fry as fry need to be seperated for up to 2 months and with the amount of fry that can be droped at a time, when a month has passed they will be to big for the amount of fish in that tank. Thats why I am considering a Betta. I have read that the min size tank for a betta is 1 gal. This tank is 1.5 gal. I can remove the filter (they dont' like current) and take the gravel out for easy cleaning and reduce the chances of ammonia spikes and easier cleaning.
-
Well I have no idea what else to use the tank for I have been told that Bettas will be ok in there (going by whats said on the net) and I do know that the bigger the tank the better but I wasn't to know that when I brought it. The filter ran to fast for my fry (what it was origionaly going to be used for) so I am having to find something else as with that comment in other peoples mind I doubt that others will want to buy it now I will put a pick up of what the tank looks like.

you mean the $2 shop for silk plants Caryl?? Excellent idea! lol I got to find out if she will even want this yet lol. Going ot kinda spring it on her then set it up. But if she doesn't want it then I guess I get a fish to go in the tank or sell the tank
-
yeah I was going to show her and inform her that a 20% water change will be required weekly, unlike a bigger tank which could go for 2 weeks. Thanks for the info on the silk plant suggestion.I didn't think of that

Well at the pet store they are all in little breeding traps on the side of the tanks. Would contain about 2-3 cups of water at most so this tank would be bigger. Its to be for a single betta only. No other fish included. Next thing being the size that it is would a couple of plastic plants be ok instead of real? I am setting this up for someone else and I want to make it as low matinence as possible for her. Cheers
-
The little tank that I just got isn't really suitable for what I origionaly brought it for, rearing fry and breeding guppies. I was wondering if a single Betta would be ok in this? It has a 3 stage filter and heater in there. Desperatly finding a use for this tank Cheers

Bummer!! Don't move north lol I am from Hamilton origionaly but moved here just over 2 yrs ago and totaly loving it! Lets hope to get something sorted soon
-
Yeah I will wait a few more days then take some water into my LFS and get them to test it for me. Can't believe how much these snails survive through!!
-
I don't know if it means anything but the little bunch of plants that I put in there when I first set it up had snails on it. The snails are still there and doing well. Would that be an indicator that things are ok or are snails able to tolerate more than the fish?
-
well I just done a pH test and that is on 7.0 so I guess that things can't be to bad. I have been told that when your ammonia spikes so should your pH (don't know if that is myth or not). I have added 2 small 1 inch fry in there for now see how we go
-
this filter I can't put into my other tank as its a filter thats in the lid when my main tank won't support that. Its just a hood with light in it. Totaly not compatable. I did a 50% water change on the little tank today but I guess that to be on the safe side I should give it another couple of days to settle. Would it be wise to do a water change every day for the next 2-3 days or just leave it from the one I done today?

How can I tell that the tank is ok to put fish into?. Its a very small tank (5.7lts) which I am going to use as a hospital/fry rearing/ breeding tank. I took water from my main tank and put it in there to help the filter get a good start but the filter was running to fast and almost creating a wourlpool in the tank so my husband and I did all sorts of things to restrict the flow from the pump to slow it down. Now that this is finaly done the water went all cloudy. I only have a pH test kit but was wondering when will it be safe to put fish in. Cheers
-
I got a new tank today (hehehehehe) and its only a small 5.7ltr tank for my baby fry and maybe a hospital/breeding tank. I was wondering to help it set up sooner will I be able to add water from my previous tank to this tank with out having to wait a week or so?? The filter has bio balls, activated carbon and sponge. It is just a small tank for my fry at present as there is to many to go into a breeding trap. So would adding water from my tank be ok or do I have to set it up and let it run a week first?? Would like to set it up as soon as possible before to many fry get eaten. cheers
-
Awesome! never thought of that
-
Well I didn't get the other tank as the place that I went to didn't have it any more so out of luck there and when my hubby caught on what was happening he got grumpy so yeah... no more tanks at the moment.
-
do you want me to remove my signature?? Hubby don't know it yet but if its still available I am getting another small tank (about 10ltrs I think) which I will use to either hold fry or breed spacific guppies together But first of all it will be to hold fry I think lol but shhhhhhhh don't let my secret out
-
Thoes two males (there are actualy 3 in my tank) are from my very first drop of fry that came just after easter. I thought that they were going to be 3/4 blacks but over time their blue has been comming through. The photos make them look a lot more blue than you can actualy see in the tank as to me they look more purple but none the less still awesome little fish

Here is a picture of the Mummy I put a red line under her so you know which one she is and a couple of pictures of her fry. I have noticed that compaired to all the other frys I have had these ones are really yellow in colour and more see through than the other ones. All the other fry that I have seen in my tank have been of a light greyish colour but these look like they are little drops of butter lol with eyes of course That is just the one corner that they are hiding in. I stoped counting once I hit 30 fry. Its the most I have ever had in one go Very excited
-
My golden guppy finaly had her fry. She has been dropping over the last 24 hrs and my tank is now swarming with them. I have never had so many fry before and thanks to the floating riccia from DubbieBoy many have survived. I am wondering what sort of colouration can I expect with a golden guppy?? She was pregnant before I got her (I think :-? ) so I really don't know if she could of mated before I got her or just after I got her. Her tail is 3/4 clear yellow with a little white up the top and a single small spot. Lets hope I get something interesting.
-
if your tank is still newish then it is possible that it could be brown algae. I had that all over my two large rocks in my tank before it got to anything else but it didn't take long (about a week if that) before I noticed it on the glass, gravel and other ordaments in the tank. Thats when I got a bristlenose and I haven't had a problem with it since The colour of the aglae that I got was a rusty brown colour.
-
yeah I think there are some pics of the ones your talking about in the livebearer section with pictures The guppies with the blue/purple fins are from my first drop of fry that I got just after easter.
-
well I don't know if it was ammonia burn either as I have never seen it. I am just going on what the store owner told me. She said that the fish had travled a long way and were so many in one bag that there can be an ammonia build up. What I saw tho was little lumpy white specks on the tail and all the fins. I asked if it was whitespot and she said no as it would be all over the body not just the fins and tail. But still I am annoyed that it died as it was a very beautiful fish. Guess I will just have to be on the look out for another one later down the track.
-
Well the fish that I brought yesterday that the lady said only had a little bit of ammonia burn due to traveling in bad conditions died during the night. It was a lepoard, cobra or snakeskin kind of guppy and they don't get them in often at all and I am totaly pissed that it died when they said it would come right in 24 hrs when it didn't even last 12!!. And I have no idea what Killies look like lol but I think I will just stick to my guppies for now.
