  1. Be careful with the Neons too as I remember one of our original pairs eating some we put in the comunity tank. These fish were saucer size though.
  2. Anyone need any aquaculture gear as I've got a copy of their capital stock coming. Most all the livestock gone.
  3. Might be a good time for someone to buy that aquaculture business they've dreamed about?

    MH Hours

Re; Ultimate Marine Aquariums by Micheal Paletta He states some averages from the 50 tanks in the book so here goes; Of the 42 tanks housing SPS corals 20% only used MH lamps. 12% employed fluros exclusively. 6.45 watts per gallon. 9.8hrs photoperiod. He has six pages analysing the data collected in the book at the start.
  5. That was from large comets and not just a single fish. Pauas I've spawned have had an estimated 2-3,000,000 eggs. The problems start when you have to feed all those hungry mouths... just like my children... Most broadcast spawners will have large batches... survival of the fittest.
  6. Nice. Hard to read the report though....
  7. Goldfish can spawn a couple of thousand eggs. All dependent of size of breeders. I've had spawnings of 6000 and more. The hardest part is growing the numbers and grading out the reject fish. The internet is full of info.
  8. Now that would be THE project to be 'manager' on..... It's a great thing to be able to put your dreams into reality.... If anyones going to visit let me know, I'll jump on for a look.

    Reef Tanks

    WOW They look good.
  10. Go see your DOC/ MAF rep and talk to them about what you want to do. NZ has some corals and some vary nice marine life. Sea urchins can be kept and will feed on Abalone/Paua pellets. The guy who sells them on Trade Me can supply you with some or a local Abalone grower. All these guys love water movement so give them heaps. Watch the triple fins as they can get aggressive, crays can tend to hide food under rocks to rot and if you keep fish feed them some live food. Good Luck Rob
  11. Good to see someone playing with the locals. Dave Cooper at Mahurangi Tech has had a bit of experience with local species, he may be able to help or know someone. Rob
  12. Hi Jo Check the pipes to see what sort and if galv it could be zinc toxicity. Otherwise take your own water which you know is from a reliable source. Rob
  13. Good to see you've been busy.... obviously checking on the supply...
  14. Nice Call. This is an interesting thread.....
  15. I agree in principal about the need to shop around but if you ask the lfs to match the price your willing to pay someone else, will he? Where do you see the lfs fitting in to the picture then? What do they need to supply to make you more happy about spending your money there? I have been wanting to find out, from you the customer, what is missing from the pet store you support. We are trying to help the stores that support us to improve their business through costomer feed back we collect. How many of you have your own business or work for a business that makes profitto pay your wages? All of us. Good to see your support to fellow hobbiest with frag trading and support as I would like to see the marine side become more main stream. We also want see more organismes aquacultured than raped off the reefs but we all need to realize this business needs profits for research........ to supply you the customer. The power at the end of the day is in your hands though as to wether your lfs stays in town though. Thanks for any market research you feel free to give. Robert@Aquagold
  16. For all this talk about pet shops ripping people off, I feel is unjust. Sure I am a wholesaler but there are people out there who are and will be coming into the hobby and they need the support lfs gives them. Stores also need to make money to stay in business and provide other products/services. Most pet store people are lifestyle people who love pets as much as us. We all need to make profits as this keeps us in business and employing those that like to finish at five and not think about work so they can enjoy their family time. Do any of you mutter to yourselves about lack of service, well it costs. Stores also try to provide you with a choice of stock not always an easy task. Just something to think about.

Hi Aaron When I was runnuing the paua farm we had our main reservour hooked up to our system to keep it turning over as we were told that still seawater had a bacterial bloom in it once it sat for too long. I am setting up a research system at the moment and it's good to talk around a bit. Ta

Do you aerate the water while you have it sitting? What's the longest it left before use? Do you prefilter before putting in your system, say to 50>10mu?
  19. Do you have to live in Christchurch to come? Living in Gisborne you don't get asked to much unless you invite yourself.
  20. And what did your iks controller cost you reef?
  21. ph meters/controllers need regular checking and maintenance. Your systems holds too much that is dear to you to not double check your readings. I checked our ph meter on the Paua farm every friday and recalibrated if needed. All meters/controllers had regular checks.

    Hi

Hi Dennis I sold my farm, to a brother and sister, who I now help/advise to grow stock for me to sell. The original stock was what I had benn using over the last 6 yrs of breeding. I have mainly done fancies though- orandas are my main line. Hope this answers your question. I am involved in quite a few areas in the aquatic field. I have breed egg layers, livebearers, egg scatterers, grown 65,000 paua....... We have some axolotols but we have just had a shop buy our lot. If you have surplus we will also buy. Aquagold facilitates business in the aquatic field utilising experience and contacts to bring forth the best possible product. Any question feel free to ask. As I have stated I will share where I can. I am as passionate about fish as anyone here - ask my wife. She reckons I've got Guppies in the blood.
