I have just read the promo advertised earlier in this thread. Went thru all the palaver of what we should not, maybe able to, or can if your careful, then I went back to see who actually put "this" out. Just so happens that I was a foundation member of this association and boy have things changed. Private property, don't ask, wait till ya get asked what ya doing. Fauna areas, just made for excellent capture. Careful of local iwi, might be their rights being trampled on?? Remember one year at a "Molly hunt" that a local iwi member stated that they had put the fish there and it was their food?? Come on!! One of the executive in those days was even going to export captured fish. But hey!! We did have scruples, it was frowned upon taking mature fish, so we were only capturing trout tucker any way. Then it says in the first line of the HOME page, Best known for its pristine, cool clear waters and trout and salmon sports-fishery, New Zealand Trout?? One of the biggest killers of our native species Poof!! And who introduced these huh?? I don't think ANY species are under a protection banner. Alan 104

MICRO-CHIPPING TURTLES, anyone know any info on this???
Alan replied to Insect Direct's topic in Reptiles and Amphibians
Have a look at the end of your dogs nose, his snout. See the pattern there?? That is a nose print associated to that dog, and that dog alone. It can be used as a fingerprint ID as well. Can be removed with a knife tho. But most theives wouldn't think of that. Thank goodness. Alan 104 -
You could have two girls doing "their" thing. If so, no way are you going to get fertilized eggs. If you catch them at "it", check that their ovadepositors are different. Alan 104

MICRO-CHIPPING TURTLES, anyone know any info on this???
Alan replied to Insect Direct's topic in Reptiles and Amphibians
Yes they have to be found to be scanned. Now if they can be found, a much simpler and of course cheaper option is a photo to identify them. Turn the turtle over, and you have the equivalent to a finger print in the design on its shell. This only increases size with age, so if you were to take a pic annually and store it on a disc, you'll have a permanent ID system of your own. All of mine are ID'd like this. Alan 104 -
Woops, yep. Alan 104

And next they will be harrassing their tank mates. Not a good choice I'm afraid. I know they are cheapest but also they are the worst. Alan 104

Why are you using undergravel heating if you have a heater, or viceversa?? Alan 104

Tsarmina, if you do a google on those fish, you will find some brill info on them. Line drawings as well as photos, to explain the differences, not only of the two you are asking about, but similar ones as well. Alan 104

SS has it right, and you will have to remove the babies from the parents at about ten days old, as the parents, seeing them as a threat to their next attempt at spawning, will eat them. Alan 104

Hi Fishtv, normally our first post is an explaination of who we are, where we are from, what fish and tanks we have, what experience we have, and this is done thru the Welcome area, anyway, welcome to the FNZAS forum site, here all queries are looked at, and if anyone has some sort of discussion that they think can help, they will. So pull up a chair and enjoy. Back to your question, breeding traps are seldom used by experienced breeders for just the same reason you have stated, the females sre taken from a place they know as home and are put into solitary confinment and a small enclosure alone. What would you do? Freak out? That's what happens here. We don't find much use for these traps, except maybe to have them inside a tank to grow the fry on a bit before releasing them into the next tank for them to carry on their growing. But be careful when doing this as larger fish, like cichlids, can suck a baby out of the trap or other fish can, and do, jump into the trap, have a feed, then return to the open tank a bit more replete. So your idea Fishtv to get another small tank setup is a good one, and when not in use for that reason, can be used a a quarantine for fish for new aquisitions or as a hopital/treatment tank. So catch the MTS disease and start getting a few more tanks setup. You'll need them if you are going to get serious about breeding fish. Alan 104

Did you remove the parents from the spawn, or did they hatch out the eggs and stay with the babies Ludimac?? You can read that two ways. Well I can anyway. Alan 104

It is with regret that I inform you of the passing of Peter Cottles wife on Christmas eve. He has been in touch with several FNZAS members to inform them of her passing. I met Peter and his wife several years back when he was a guest speaker at the Waikato Aquarium Club, from then on Rose and I have kept in contact with him and his wife and because of his help to the NZKA he was made an honary member. Rose remembers a time when she and Sheila sneaked out the back yard for a smoke while Pete and I dicussed fish, what else?? Her voice was very deep and rasping and she said that I know I shouldn't be smoking like this, but what the heck, I enjoy it. Peter and Sheila was here just a couple of months ago and gave a picture and talk show on his exploits in Asia, up at Tauranga, a welcome visit to one of our newest clubs formed in the Western Bay of Plenty, and vistors from as far south as Wellington came to meet the man and his wife. Due to his short visit here, they decide to help with a small fledgling club, than to go socialising with the Bay, NZKA members. I hope Peter can still fit into his busy schedule, his vists down under, as we did enjoy his meeting, experiences and jokes. Rest in peace friend, and deepest condolences from your mates here in NZ Peter. Below is the email he sent to us. Dear friends, I am sorry to have to tell you that Sheila passed away in the early hours of Christmas eve following a massive heart attack. To say that we are devastated would be an understatement. She had not been at all well since returning from holiday particularly with her back problem. I will let you know about funeral arrangements and you will be welcome to come. I would greatly appreciate it if you did not phone me for the next week. As you can imagine, I am finding it difficult to talk about it and would appreciate the time to get adjusted a little more. In spite of that, we had a great Christmas day – our 4 year old grand daughter took away much of the pain. I know your thoughts will be with me and the family at this time. Pete Alan NZKA 104

Fishboi, do you think this is an improvement on the original version of this fish?? I personally think it is an abomination to the fish that most of us know and appreciate, some even love. Alan 104

No in reply to that query re A. steindekneri (spp). That was way before digi cams. Alan 104

Thanks for the replies guys. The reason I asked was that the one I got thru TradeMe is said to leak, which the previous owner couldn't fix. It'll be interesting when I get it to see if I can solve the problem. Nope, I don't know where it is leaking as a friend picked it up for me. Alan 104

May be we shold have a consortium and pool together and get PaulB to breed them for us, then reimbursing us with some teenagers. Alan 104

To get them you'll prolly have to find a NZKA member, if you are a member of the club they normally look after you a bit better. If they came from the wholesaler to a LFS they would cost in the vicinity of $70 for the pair. Lovely fish tho, and worth it when we weren't breeding them and they became a MUST HAVE item when we saw them. Alan 104

Who said there is no Santa. Good-one SMC. You have a ripper too. Alan 104

Hey Jazzy, I'm in about the same boat as you. I'm a brand new Superann, and just as of today the kids have changed their chrissie plans, and we aren't there, so it will just be me and Rose have waffles with golden syrup, cream and lemon juice. Bitterness is a wasted emotion, and even if I am a mod I don't hold it against you, but at least there are some in here feeling for you. TRY and have a happy day tomorrow and the next one and the next one etc. By the way, what is the link to her feedbacks. Alan 104
