    Australes.

I am having a problem with my new hatchlings. They are hatching out as tho they are early, and behave like a cichlid, wriggler for five days. The hatch time is the correct time , it's just this wriggler stage they go through. After that, they are up and racing ready to go. I'm not doing anything different from when they were hatching normally, other than my male is one of those new imports. Any ideas. Alan
  2. Ira, is it possible to get the eggs away from the parents, say, give them something removable, and remove their fav spawning possi if they have one. Set the eggs up in similar water parameters, with meth. blue and see if the eggs show signs that they are fertile. This is one way to prove if one of them is a male. Don't need to save any babies unless you want to though. Alan

    How would I ...

I use a blade from a "bic" disposable. They are thinner than a craft blade, and less likely to get stuck. I use a piece of wood to push it along, as being thin, even the blunt side can cut. I also use a little leverage as soon as possible as the cut is made, this helps get the strain off the blade. Remove the inside bead first, this will mean you have less glue holding the joints. Therefore less to cut. You can use a piece of scrap glass for this, as well as cleaning up the flats on the sheets that have been removed. The most vital part to clean is/are the edges that have had glue on them. Go fo all of the above posts, there are good points in all of them. Not sure about the anti-radiation suit tho. Alan
  4. Just checked your profile. I see you have that info there. will let them se the go. Alan

J X's3, Why aren't you affiliated. If you join with the most exciting aquarium club in NZ, it will only cost you $15 NZ. With that, you don't have to go to a monthly meeting, we don't have them. And you'd only have to travel to NZ once a year You get a free mag once every three months, now that's worth the $15 to start with. Also you get a yearbook, it has all our addresses and email addys, so you can spam all us NZers. Alan (50% Oz - 50% Kiwi) ps. by the way, that's the NZKA Al
  10. Caryl, not too sure about your statement about willow. As a breeding medium, killiphiles often use willow root. I would think if there were any toxins in it the would be more concentrated in the roots than the tinber. Also rats, rabbits, chinchillas, all love to munch out on the willow branches. What'cha reacon. Alan

    seahorse breeding

Can you check their taxonomical name from Jansens next time your in. Be interesting to check on the puta. My self, I've never heard of "fresh water S/H's" But there again, I don't know everything. just about tho. Alan
  12. Dennis, YOU tell them what you want for them. If they sell them for $10, ask for $5 if they dont like that, take them out of the loop and sell for $7.50 privately Use that Buy, Sell & Xchange rag you have. Once ppl get to know that you have fish for sale, they'll start enquiring from you first b4 going to the LFS. Then you'll have your own little group of customers. THAT'S why the dealers aren't over impressed by breeders. A fair deal is all us breeders are looking for, K?? Alan
  13. With the catfish, due to their spikes and vigour. To bag them, use a small amount of water. Double bagged. Then get a larger bag, line it with several layers of newspaper, then put the other bags, fish and water into this. 6 hours isn't that long for a fish to travel. Summer time too Alan
  14. If you are starting from scatch, you main things that push the price of keeping them up is heating and lighting. I have just finished a fishshed. For the windows, I double glazed them, the walls have at least 50mm of polystyrene insulatin as well as the roof. The main heating source is the concrete floor. As I poured it, I put in PVC piping, through which water, heated by a solar is pumped. This lasts as a heat resivoir thru the hours of darkness, and as backup I have a thermostatically controled fan heater. Beware Without these your power bill can soar over $300 very easily in the summer. In "special tanks", can have a heater for each of them. Alan

Warrens tap water is worse than his tank water, or should I say Napiers water. not just Warrens tap. Alan
  16. nope, that's late Bet ya were watching football Alan
  17. Two footer mate They are a good size for when you REALLY get the disease and suit a huge range of fish Remember to take off the sharp edges, they're like razors. The cuts can be horrific I use an axe spit-stone to rub them off. This is a disc shaped emery stone about 75mm across and 20mm thick. Do it with running water flowing over the action, lubricates and stops flying splinters, you could wear safety glasses too. Alan
  18. dunno if I should talk to you after what your cricketers did to us last night. Keep that tank as a q tank. Just get a piece of glass and glue over the crack. In other words put a patch on it. Make sure the glue is cleaned along the bottom join so the new silicon can seal it properly Alan
  19. Pauly, there are two women up that way that are in the NZKA that were talking at the last FNZAS conference, about starting up a club. Hazel and Jane. If you get one going, I'm happy to come along, meet your group and do a tank making demonstration Alan
  20. I'm inWhakatane, a bit down the road from you. I could make it out of 6mm if you want. I have second hand glass and can make it for $90 if you want. Lid provided. $10 extra and I'll drop it off for you. Send me a detailed design on what you want if you want me to do it. I've made dozens of tanks, used to make them for Carine at one stage. Alan

    slimy culture

sneak a culture into the frig as a back up Label it tho Alan
  22. Try some live food like daphnia or mossie lavae It's just coming on nicely now Goodluck with the fish Alan
  23. In MHO, 6mm is too thin, I think Warren will vouch for that, just a wee bit too much strain Although I do have some a that size I've made Alan

    slimy culture

Prolly too hot, they do not like too high a temp. Don't keep them in a fish room. Lack of oxygen will bowl them too Also if they are too wet, just need to be kept damp. Don't overfeed them, only what they can eat in a day Too small a container, I use a washing machine bowl. Alan
  25. Look up in the bunch of things under NEW ZEALAND FSHROOM logo and you'll see Faq, Search, Membershiplist, etc. In the middle of them, you'll see "you have no new messages" Or that you have, obviously depends. Just click on that. To send them, go to an answer that has been sent in by the person you want to send a "PM" (private message) to, click that, write, and send, they'll also recieve info that a message is awaiting on site and an URL to go to get it. I'll send you one to have a practice with killifan. Alan
