  1. I think they would be the common whiptail http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=738 Your fish look just like younger versions of the pair i have and mine look just like the ones in the photos of the link above.
  2. Ahh! i see you found the Welcome section!! Good work. Have you got any fish or are you just thinking about getting some?
  3. Sorry i can't help you with the geos but hopefully someone here can! Welcome to the site! Perhapes you could pop into the welcome section and introduce yourself? What part of the South Island are you located? Us Southies like to know who our neighbours are! Yes you can link to photos on this forum but you will have to use a photo hosting site like http://s2.photobucket.com to upload your photos to. I hope all your questions get answers!
  4. took me flipping ages to find pearl danios! They are the only ones listed as Brachydanio. All the other danios are under danio or devario. I printed the whole list off so i can add it to the library. (48 pages ) There are killies on the list. i have refered to the list tons of times and most of the time the fish i am loking up has been there. The only fish i was really disappointed that was not on the list was the celebes half beak/ nomorhamphus liemi
  5. I got some killies at conference. 2 species, 2 males and 2 females of each type. I got up yesterday morning to see one of the females dead. She didn't look like she had long gone But floating upside down at the waters surface and not breathing or moving at all even when prodded and pushed around the tank a bit usually is enough to satisfy me that a fishy has gone to the big tank in the sky. I was pretty disappointed thinking "darn i killed one already!! " I left the body in the tank, telling myself i would fix it up later.  I had to do some water changes in other tanks and got distracted for the rest of the day and totally forgot the dead fish. I got up this morning and did a head count in the killie tank. 8 fish. There is the little madam swimming around happy as larry. She looks a little ragged around the fins but is probably the most cheerful fish in the whole house! She should be pretty happy that i didn't biff her out!!

    Dither Fish?

i have got a pair of red rainbows that are about 10 - 11 cm. i don't know how they would go as a dither fish. They seem pretty intelligent, more like a cichlid than a dopey silver dollar. They are also a bit more pricey than a danio too though.
  7. I actually have no idea specifically what type of whips i have. I might try taking a couple of pics at some stage to see if we can work it out. I have put a divider into the tank with the whiptails and seperated the parents from the eggs. I just don't want to risk anyone eating the eggs. Have got an airstone very close to the eggs and i can see the fry developing very well. I am NOT going to dare take the eggs/fry out of the tank.
  8. Yay! and You got to hold the blue tongue lizard! Glad to see you made it home! I hope you trip went well?
  9. oh fudge! hang on and i will have a play.... ... ... ...
  10. Here are some of my favourite photos of the weekend. http://s2.photobucket.com/albums/y49/soggy_fruit_loop/conference/
  11. Hopefully Caryl and Grant will be safely home in the next couple of hours! And i would imagine it will be straight to bed! I am looking forward to seeing everyone elses photos too! I am busy loading mine right now! :bounce:
  12. i strongly advise not to "post" (ie nzpost) fish. I work for nz post and we just can't offer the care required for a fish.
  13. I was lucky that when i bought mine years ago i asked for a sexed pair and the guy was very good at telling the difference easily. They also were young adults and pretty much fully grown. this is a male http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/image.php?image_id=4349 and Female http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/image.php?image_id=4348 I don't think i have ever noticed the bristles on the back of my male before. Females get pretty fat with eggs and mine lays green eggs so gets a green belly. here is another pic female is at the bottom and the male has bristles on his cheeks like mine. http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/image.php?image_id=3411
  14. yeah it is a small chunk of a flower pot. But his lady laid the eggs on the bottom of the tank! Bit hard to remove that!! You can just see the pot bit tucked under the sponge filter on the right hand side. I have had a big piece of polystyrene which i use to block that side of the tank and to give him privacyon the tank for about 2 weeks now, i took it off to take a peek and that is when he started hopping on his eggs angrily! It is quite funny!
  15. aww!!! Well you will be please to know everyone is slowly making their way home today. I joined the killie club while up there too :bounce:  AND my whiptails have laid!, my whiptails have laid!!! YAY!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
  16. looks like it has been pretty quiet in the forum with the rowdy bunch away for the weekend!
  17. yeh it wasn't in the mail box when i got home! i hope the postie didn't eat it. Pilot on my flight home said it was minus 4 degrees here in Chch this morning. Felt like it too! So i don't think the icecream will melt!!
  18. I had another peek and snapped a photo! Daddy is funny cause he bounces up and down on the eggs in agitation(sp) He doesn't like me looking at him!
  19. Yay I am home! What an amazing weekend! I have never had so many new experiences in such a short space of time! So many new people to meet, foods to try, scenery to look at..... (antics to laugh at) I have to thank Caryl and Grant for taking care of me and transporting me. I am extremely grateful, thank you! Also *THANK YOU* To Warren and everyone in the Hawkes bay aquarium club for putting on such a spectacular event! It was great fun to meet everyone and put the faces to the names. A very odd feeling when you meet someone in person for the first time but you feel like you have know them for ages! Just try and keep me away from conference next year!!
  20. I have just come back from conference and was doing the routine check of all the fish and have found my male whiptail is guarding eggs! :bounce: I have no idea when he might have spawned and hubby didn't even know there were eggs!! I have been half trying to coax these guys to lay for years! And *REALLY* don't want to lose the eggs. They are in my tank with my 16ish 1 month old silver dollar fry and the whiptail parents. I would like a vote as to whether it would be safer to remove the parents and silver dollars and leave the fry in the tank by themselves or should i take the dollars out only? I don't want to stress daddy out in case he munches all the eggs and it looks like a good spawn too
  21. Some are still about dealing with the tanks. Mr L
  22. Greetings to tHEcONCH. Loopy hopes tHEcONCH will keep an eye out for details of the local club in the clubs section. She thinks tHEcONCH sounds like a wonderful candidate for the club with a well established addiction! I am going to edit that because you seem to be a rather entertaining character and I think we will enjoy your stay just as much if not more!!!
  23. great photos! I am glad to see that gold severum doesn't get in the way just for me! I find he has to be in every shot  I could have sworn i saw you taking a photo of the silver dollar babies on sunday night Caryl?
