  1. trial yes, error only if you chuck in large quantities or the wrong stuff like KW thinking it is baking soda . if you add a small amount test and increase it to see how much is needed on a weekly? basis then i can't see a problem. on the other hand if you want to adjust your water within 12-24 hours (which is not really a wise thing to do anyway as it could cause more damage then good) then i would call it not error but a mistake full stop. how can anyone put an accurate liter amount in the formula (its guessing at a best to start off with), unless you design your tank with all sand, rockwork and corals etc and then add the messured amount of water needed to fill the tank. i played with the formula as well but i guessed my approx. literage too. so whats better guessing something and hope for the best or slowly working out how much your systems really needsn while testing on an ongoing basis until the correct amount needed is found? 2. what kind? if your leathers (soft corals) go mad what kind of other soft corals died? if she gets big enough she'll draw blood. i know from well yeah. :-? if you have some sort of soft coral meltdown then you could have lots of toxin in the water too, are you running carbon and a skimmer?
  3. shading looks looks like a possible culprit so could be chemical warfare form leathers or mushrooms as the remaining bit looks healthy and expanded. move it away from competition would be my first suggestion. do you experience any other problems with different colonies?
  4. because all you really do is increase the water volume! as live rock and other stuff gets transfered as well. otherwise it would be deadly doing a large water change woudn't it.
  5. my iwaki 100 uses 248 watt 24/7. it runs my return (almost 4000 liters)and 2 skimmers, plus water change (seperate valve). so i figure thats not bad for what i get out of it. plus it has very goodd head pressure unlike many other pumps.
  6. it should still not just be cast aside using algae systems. especially for lagoon set ups that include catalaphyllia, gonioporas and similar (corals that do pretty poorly these days, and which i had no problem keeping, growing and multiplying in an old setup years ago that had huge amounts of caulerpa, HA and other algae growth). it seems that certain corals need the enviourment. also algae would release "nutrients" back into the water that may be needed / utelised by some corals. one should remember that coral reefs are actually algae reefs but due to the massive amounts of herbvores are grazed upon all the time so that many algae are visible to the eye. in most SPS tanks nowadays one doesn't see any algae and i wonder if this is a good thing?
  7. and it will cost you about $50 a month to run = $600 a year!!!
  8. do you still have your regal?
  9. i found the same, less growth and colour. i changed back to AB 10000 which burn alot more ice white with less blue.
  10. don't know much about the smaller Iwaki's but mine (100) is very good but not quit. i would not recommed it to anybody to run under the tank inside the house. i would guess here that the smaller versions are not as noisy. and they are pretty (not the right word very is better) expensive if you buy them over the counter.
  11. i always liked you steve. slappers your always welcome to pop around when you up here. BTW what was in your avatar?
  12. damn, teaches me to loch out from the site after i finshed. seems the wife has nothing else to do!!! and sofar i had the perfect day - kids at day care, wife at work, dog locked outside. slept in and went to jansens to pick me up my personal birthday pressie. thanks Ben! i didn't cut to much off there is at least 2-3 cm left. 8)
  13. Damn, tried to do this from work but didn't know his log on so am doing it from home. Today is the Cookie's birthday - I'll leave it up to you all to work out how old he is. Sandi (the wife)
  14. what happend to you? just a couple post the last 2 weeks and nothing since september, almost like you dropped of the earth.
  15. thanks fay was great to put a face to the name too. not quite, had one, now please no funny jokes here, berlin classic until 2 month ago. then i upgraded, yes i finally upgraded to two berlin classic's (got the second on trade me for a bargain  (thanks michael)). just hope i don't over skim with these two "monsters"
  16. its waterproof ink, but my fish are pretty lousy doing the crossword.
  17. 2200*710*650 plus sump 900*600*600 all up a bit over 1300 liters 3*150 M/H 10000 AB (13000K) tried BLV 150 watt 14000K but didn't like them to much. 1*400 M/H 14000 Narva which is OK but prefered my previous bulb (sunburst 400 watt 12000K) 2* 58watt t8 actinic from arcadia plus over the winter month natural sunlight for about 4-5 hours which really shows that even a 400 watt is nothing compared to sunlight. you can hardly see if the lights are on or not.
  18. well about time i posted some more photos. side view front view (left side of tank) clam on pillar 17.5.2005 (note small frags of SPS acros) 10.10.2005 growth of a.latistella (31.5.2005) and the same pillar today (a.latistella grown quite a bit as has wasp's green acro), the clam is still in the middle but not visible at all anymore. from above the water (sps pillar) clam visible from above some more acro's large clam with softies large p.cactus acro's 12.10.2005 same acro's 17.5.2006 fire coral, blue coral and other stuff
  19. Tank is looking good speed, i see all the corals are doing well.
  20. could also be a centaphore but still it will not cause any damage.
  21. its a worm and thats the way it feeds, sending out slimy long strands which capture all sorts of stuff. the worm then retracts it and voila here is lunch. keep them they are not a pest and add bio-diversity to your tank. some are pretty hard to keep alive over long term.
