  1. Well my plan worked. Last night the anemone walked right over the seio powerhead. (that does 4400 litres per hour). And no damage the just kept moving onwards to his next destination. The foam approach worked a treat. So i'm now looking for another seio powerhead for the other end of my tank. Pics coming soon.

    Flat worms.

There must be a natural way that they are kept in order in nature. There must be a natural preditor, something must EAT them.

    Flat worms.

I,ve got heaps of them I am worried that my efforts to kill them may kill my stuff as well. The problem is that my anemone is so sensitive to any bad water quality that he may do the same thing and die. Also he is missing a couple of tenticles and this could be damaged by the chemicals. Can you do light doses to reduce the numbers more slowly. I could dose then do a 60 to 80% water change. also how much does it cost???
  4. I just heat it up and biff it in I changed 80 litres this weekend. (two surfing trips 2*40 litre water changes) almost half my total water...... It was from a West coast washing machine storm. A little cloudy for a couple of hours. But I reackon that even in the tropics there are storms and most likely trace elements that get stirred up that the marine life loves. As I add the water the clown fish come and play around it. I reckon the anemone responds within an hour or two. My rule is put it in straight away, but I do surf alot making NSW the best option for me. Cheers

    Flat worms.

Brianemone had a good theory He thinks that the population will grow to an unsustainable population then crash naturally. I think this sounds logical. If so once it has crashed maybe this is the time to treat em to the taste of some mean chemicals. To finish them off..

    Flat worms.

Is the only way to get rid of them using chemicals. If so what is best. Otherwise is there any fish that eat them (preference) or natural predators. eg shrimp, crabs???? Cheers
  7. Well after amost 2 weeks in the same spot the bubble tip moved. So I planned a sump. but found that the tank couldn't be drilled when even half full. Plus some major design faults. eg sounding like a water fall. For the last couple of days me and my wife turned off any power heads when he was near. As we had to make it till the weekend for me to make the tank anemone safe. In Saturday morning got up to find the tips of the anemone in a powerhead. aagrh..... He only lost about 5-6 tenticles but still he was not a happy chap. I spent all yesterday (as planned) making the tank anemone safe. Now thankes to Brianemones lend. I have two water intakes both defended heavily with foam ($1 a peace from payless plastics). Still no sump but all you can see in the tank is one pipe heading to the protein skimmer. And a seio powerhead with a big foam bib on it. The anemone stopped moving again within 2 hours, in a spot near the seio intake. But now no worries as there is no way he can get damaged by it. The way the tank now looks is amazing without four powerheads and wiring, the protein skimmer intakes and the fluval water intake pipes and surface skimmer. Even the heaters now hidden. I'll try to put a photo on this week. Once again thanks for your help Brianemone.

    water top ups

I washed the carbon for about 5 minutes when added. I then added about 5 litres of top up water as salt was very high about 2.7% of the total tank volume. I will only do one change next time as this will identify the problem. I guess that if both were not quiet to the anemones liking then it double the impact on its health. Its happy now and I have set up a rain water catching system. Thanks to our neighbours dodgy spouting. Cheers

    water top ups

What do you guys think is best to top up water in a tank Rain water. Tap water. Or is it the carbon I used Hamilton tap water two days ago and put carbon into the filter the anemone packed a wobbly, and closed up all day yesterday and today. I went to raglan for NSW water and took out the carbon and now 4 hours later and 40% water change he is open and happy again. Is it carbon or water. Maybe it was one or the other that caused the downfall of my first anemone? Especially when I couldn't tell the difference between happy and sad. I have heard that anemones are the first indicators of low water quality.
  10. About 160 litres or so and maybe 45kg coral rock, 15 kg sand (estimate) Lots of bugs and insects living in it at the moment.
  11. On the cheap my 4foot cost less than $1500 (excluding live stock) So 5K will get a good setup in my opinion. Shop around look on Trade Me for lights, tank & stand etc.... Cheers Good Luck
  12. Last night I measured it. About 25 cm across when fully opened. As with the power heads I am going to put sponges on all 6 of them.... The main reson for so many is that this is my first setup and I couldn't build a sump into the tank.. In a couple of years I will rebuild the tank better. It hasn't moved around for almost three days now. Thats a good me's thinks I have feed it some white bait and I grabbed it and gobbled it down, even while the shrimp tried to fight for it. Cheers
  13. Well after the last anemone disaster I did some serious research. I doubled the water quality and switched to NSW. I also studyed what a healthy anemone should be like and easier ones to keep. I even created a spot for it and over the last two days it has moved across the tank and settled into it. My question since bubble tips are symbotic how often should I feed him? Also to be even safer does another know how to make power head protectors so anemone doesn't become sushi?
  14. Thanks for the advice guys....
  15. Natural salt water changes I have a 200 litre tank and can do 40 litre natural salt water changes once a week is that to much?? I'm collecting it from Raglan after my surfs. Talk about water quality improvements........

    Skimmer

I have a sumpless tank with a hang on protein skimmer and a cannister filter. Due to tank stand design issue. I got it from Jetskisteve. On this forum for a good price. Hopefully you can contact him. So far (be it only 5 -6 months) fish and shrimps are healthy. Good luck PS when I decided to set up a marine tank is was told it would cost me $400-500 to set up. Yeah right......
  17. I have seen a large britle worm (2 inch long at least) in the evenings in my tank under the artic blue lights. Are they good or bad. If their bad what will eat them...

    Carbon questions

    Thanks for the help
  19. When I set up my tank I was told to use carbon. I did but was recently told that it can damage anemones. What are your guys experiences.
  20. The little fulla is still unhappy. Hes been moving around between rocks. I have stepped up my water changes. 10% twice weekly.
  21. I am not mad with the retailer who sold me the anenome. As he is reasonably new to retailing marine products. I did tell him for future reference about the type of anenome. He is learning as we all are about these types of marine animals all the time. Best beat is when people read about aneomes, on the net they find out important information like what we have been talking about. Cheers
  22. Fay that pic of the aneome is amazing. Here's hoping my one will do the same. They do look similar although my ones still hidding. Cheers

    Frags wanted

Got yellow tonga tonight. Thanks for the advice on the brain Pies Cheers
  24. Please remember I asked for help not abuse. I have the anemone now and am trying to keep it. And yes you are right I have not alot of experience with marine fish I admit it. Hence mistakes can and are made. I have found that my skimmer was not functioning properly. Was 3-5 mls per 3 days. Now the cup is two thirds full 100mls per 24 hours. I have also researched more and was told to do more water changes. I got the metal halide setup Acardia 3000 two days after I purchased the anemone. Today he had spread out (although still behind some rocks) he would be near on 15 cm across at least. Only time will tell. Yet again thanks to those who have been helping me with my mistake. Your help is appreciated.
  25. He is still alive. Sorry no pics as camera seems broken. He is still hidding alot in between rocks. I feed him the other day and he seemed to eat some black tiger shrimp. Hard to tell as he is white and so is the shrimp.
