    Howdie

Welcome as you've found.. there's an absolute wealth of information to be had here.. the saltys can be a bit scary at times but they're alright Having a tank and nothing to do with it is the ultimate bonus.. most of us here end up the other way.. too many fish and not enough tanks lol
  2. man once again this is making me so want to get me a bichir... they ROCK! *plots to go shopping tommorrow at a certain lfs in auckland
  3. can you steal some filter media/gravel from the LFS when you pick up the clip? will do a heck of a lot more for keeping the tank cycled than "cycle" imo.
  4. Yup... I have neons in a 4' 140L tank with a 1200L/hour cannister filter, it's kind of like a river.. they love it and can swim against the current just fine, i.e. no chance of getting sucked into the intake (they play around it even)

    B/N get stuck?

I was wondering that, there is a female in the tank if it is the poor wee guy has had a hard time of it... him and the eggs lifted clean out of the water
  6. I have the wool on the top because it makes the filter quieter somewhat. In terms of how full to fill it, I fill it so that you can't see the waterline, but it's been known to sit up to 1" below the black top strip before without incident (I think people have hit issues with the powerhead sitting slightly out of the water and getting too hot/dying)

    B/N get stuck?

I got home tonight, and he was further out than I've seen him before, far enough imo that he could have gotten himself out... of course he disappeared straight back in there when I looked over heh.. have left a couple of wafers out and turned the lights off early... I'm unstressed about not seeing him, just want to make sure he's happy

    B/N get stuck?

So... I have had a male bristlenose for a few weeks now, and after his initial few days sulking I would see him at least once a day out and about, and food/courgette would disappear quite happily. Niloc came over the other evening to pick up some baby(ish) cons that were in the same tank, and to catch em we had to move the driftwood around somewhat (quick wee buggers they are ). We discovered the back half of the male b/n sticking out of a drilled hole in the bogwood, and even as we lifted it out of the water he just didn't want to come out of there So we left the wood in the tank, moving it a few times to get the cons out, and have carefully replaced it so as not to crush the poor guy. Now I understand he'll be stressed about now, and occasionally I walk past and see his tail move, but that's all I've seen just this tail sticking out of a hole which moves very occasionally. Is it possible he's gotten stuck in there? Obviously I'm not all that keen to grab him by the tail and drag him kicking and screaming out of there if he's just being a fraidy cat and chilling.
  10. heh... want to see the instructions for the stand? http://nzdance.net/~misnoma/fishtank/ That's for a R2-150
  11. Caper.. yeah.. that was a convict cichlid. They eat... urm.... well lets just say if it fits in it's mouth it'll get sampled I feed mine cichlid pellets, frozen cichlid food from the LFS and occasionally a tetra or two
  12. I think you'll be fine - even with the cannister off there's water in the filter, so it won't have dried out etc. Maybe hang off a day or two before cleaning the other one? easy way to tell is keep an eye on the ammonia levels in the next few hours, see if they change slightly (if any bacteria had died there would be a tiny rise in the ammonia as balance is restored anyway). Just my $0.02

    Our Oscars

They're generally not agressive unless provoked.. however they are greedy, and if the oscar thinks it will fit in it's mouth, it's fair game
  14. Good opp to dig this pic out again The white/yellow one is now dead unfortunately choked going back for seconds on the convict buffet.

    CO2

well if you put the cylinder in the tank and batted the guppies around with it they might die For the $30ish on trademe, I would get a Hagen CO2 toy as opposed to DIY, purely because it saves messing around, refills are pretty cheap on there as well and seem to last a good month (I'm running one of these in each of my tanks and the plants are loving it). Just watch for the expiry date on the refills being sold on trademe....

    Bracing

my 10mm 4x2x2 tank has two braces over the middle (one front-back) and braces on both ends - all 10mm
  20. Tannins just make the water brownish, doesn't effect the clarity any (looks at his clear as but browny/yellow water hehe)
  21. my 5' tank suffers from that a little bit, I find that the cihlids just love stirring up the gravel and making everything come out of it and float around. Planning to do the hell gravel vac this weekend sometime, and possibly put em on a diet (I may be overfeeding a little, I'm generous hehe)
