Reef said... > IN terms of MAF reviewing the fish list I think they may in 20 years This was discussed at the recent FNZAS conference and it seems there is a review underway. I suspect it will reduce the variety of fish we have access to. Breed what you've got! Andrew.

I > know other fish start getting aggro as they mature. > Are discus the same? Bear in mind, they're cichlids. If we were talking about Oscars no one would be suprised that one was suddenly beating up the other one. Also, there doesn't have to be any actual 'beating up', sometimes just threat signals and continuing 'dominance' behaviour can cause a lot of stress, especially in a smaller tank with no where for the sub-dominant fish to go. I'm not saying this is the case with Goldies fish, but I wouldn't overlook it as a possibility. Andrew.

Goldie said... > I thought she was just being bullied by the other discus > (I only have the two) I'd bet it is/was a case of the sub-dominant fish being 'bullied' by the dominant one and the stress associated with that. I'm very slow to treat fish unless I'm *very* sure of the problem. Andrew.

My way of hatching brineshrimp. 2L glass bottle (old style beer 'flagon') 3.5 tablespoons generic non-iodised salt 1500ml tap water 0.5 teaspoon BS eggs vigourous aeration via airline to the bottom of the bottle. I have 2 bottles indoors (in the kitchen, near a window). I harvest one a day and start another one, ready for use 48hrs later. This time of the year, I probably should use 3 bottles to allow a bit more time for better hatching. In summer 2 bottles (48hrs vs 72) is fine. One thing to remember, bad eggs wont hatch. If your eggs have been incorrectly stored (or are non-viable for some reason) there's nothing you can do to make them hatch. This can be a problem when you're doing it for the first time if you're not sure that the eggs are good. Andrew.

Folks, Did anyone else take a nasty cold away with them from Conference? Ang and I have both been sick since we got home, started off with a sore throat as we were leaving Blenheim. Just wondering. Andrew.

Not everyone has a real shark in a tank, y'know Not necessarily something I'd do, but somewhat impressive. BTW: Bikiegirl, there are quite a few fishkeepers on this site who also ride. Oscar Sheila said... > I know that keping Koi Carp is illegal in NZ, and I know why. > > But is there any move to change this? Like could potential > owners be asked to sign a contract or something? I doubt very much that Koi will ever become legal to own in NZ. They're just too much of a pest and too much money has been spent trying to get rid of them. I agree, from a hobbyists point of view, it's a shame but don't expect it to change, IMHO. Andrew.

Blueram said... > Does anybody know of any Discus breeders in the Auckland Area? > > I just want to get some tips and possibly some fish in the future. There's a woman here in Palmerston North who recently got in touch with me to say she had young fish for sale. Not quite in Auckland but she may be worth talking to. E-mail me if you want me to send her your contact details. Andrew.

Folks, Just to let everyone know, the NZKA had their AGM last weekend in Palmerston North, with people travelling from Whakatane, New Plymouth and Hamilton. Club dues were set at $10 for the year ($15 for those not already a member of another FNZAS club and capitated through them). Instead of a 'Journal' we'll be producing a 'Newsletter' 6 times a year concentrating on the fish we have in the country and getting them bred and distributed around NZ to avoid losses to the hobby. Below is a list of the club officers. President and Secretary: Andrew Broome 15 Rata Street, Palmerston North, 06 3585996, [email protected] Treasurer: Peter Sebborn 62 Rhodes Drive, Palmerston Nth, 06 3530190, [email protected] Editor: Alan Wakelin, [email protected] We, of course, welcome new and/or returning members as well as contact with other clubs around NZ. Andrew.

Jacket said... > I am unsure of what to do to keep my tank clean? The big things are feeding appropriate amounts of suitable food, removing any uneaten food and water changes to dilute waste. What sized tank? > Changeing water how much and how often? With Axolotls, 50% a week wouldn't hurt but it depends on the tank size (ie if it's a 6ft tank then its less important than with a 2ft tank given the same amount of Axolotl and food). > The brownish stuff that grows in the tank - what is it -what > to do about it -how to aviod it? Is this growing as a film on the glass and gravel? If so, it's probably 'diatoms' or 'brown algae'. Generally it's a sign of insufficient light and/or water changes. > Why is there an oily film on the surface of the water? What are you feeding? I've seen some 'trout pellet' style foods cause this sort of thing especially in a cold water tank. I've also seen it in turtle tanks where food with a high fat content is being fed. Earthworms are good Axolotl food, it might be worth starting up a worm farm... Hope that helps. Give us a few more details and we may be able to offer some more suggestions. Andrew.

Dennis said... > do they not have them at wet pets ? Ira said... > Wet pets had some the weekend before last. The last ones I saw at Wetties looked to be mostly males but with the NZKA AGM being here this weekend, no doubt I'll be in the shop at some stage and will re-check. I was kinda looking for a mature female. Thanks to those who made suggestions though. Andrew.

Folks, As part of my 'fish-sitting' duties, I've got 2 male paradise fish. Anyone know where I can get a female or two or three? Andrew.

Hi, I'm currently 'fish-sitting', for the next couple of months, a lone chocolate gourami and wouldn't mind a couple more if anyone has them. Andrew.
