  1. putting spotted with jar as a long term plan. the L114, they would eat proten based food? i found that my pleco would come out to feed on what ever everyone else is eating - the clowns never eat so fast that food is gone in an instant, would this be ok for the pleco. or wold the pleco be too slow and just die?
  2. My sailfin eats everything. as for poop, thats ok. poop turning into dirt is better than food uneated rotting. poop turning into dirt quickly becomes just that... dirt and soil. food rotten has a far more slow process of polution. I am moving my large sailfin albino wtih jar, heavily armoured and robust. Chilled pleco. I am gonna move my Royal panaque into the clown loach black aro tank, plenty of wood and hope it chews on some black algae lol and was thinking of getting one or a couple more panaques and pleco. so far im gonna have a royal panaque, cactus L114, maybe 1 or two more panaques in that tank. would look nice having many bottom dwellers. in the RTG tank, i have a small seemingly stunted common plec i got given wtih a set up i bought a while back, aint growin. might keep that there. if i get a large pleco - im talking 30cm plus common sailfin - do you think it will fight with my TT eel and Ornate and push them out of the log/tunnel theyare in? it would be cool to have a large pleco in that tank
  3. actually im not at all a believer just like the number and i think its a reasonable number. 75 is good, i will save 13 for oddballs but if i go over it im not gonna make a big issue out of the number lol
  4. yeah im lookin at the cactus leopard L114. HFF has a leopard one but not sure what sort of leopard is it. very weary of ordering and not liking it, i dont want them to be stuck wtih one. im asking in the catfish section if anyone has L114
  5. i lined my entire garage with a mixture of 50mm to 25mm from expol. cost 400 the heating costs will be recovered after 6 to 8 months, after next winter, the cost would have been justified already. In my garage, there is a back section uninsulated. The different in temp during winter was minimum 10Degrees C, to 15 Degrees C int h coldest part of winter! My tanks struggled to get up to 28C, now it dosent hav an issue at all. In the heart of winter, my ambient temp was 22 to 24. At the uninsulated portion was 10 to 15 less than that!!! Could not believe it. it will be one of the best investments youc an make i reckon. should have done it sooner
  6. i guess if you put it that way its easy to say its expensive per KG i guess. but youd ont need to feed fisht aht much i woudlnt say its the cheapest. Maintenance for my power bill is somewhat high. but then dogs eat lots, vet bills, cats same too. Birds? proably expensive too. Outlay for most birds are hundreds some thousands i think thre is a middle ground. making your own food is great!
  7. yeah, if the scarlet is big enough it will be fine. gotta see how big it is. if not, i might just go for a sailfin, try to get another albino or something. Or even a syno if i have no choice. at least plecos are armoured you see
  8. yeah, i already have 1 scarlet i like if its trye L025 scarlet. they are nice! and get chunky. anyone here have one?
  9. i already have a albino sailfin, love it but normal sailfins are boring! though they are hardiest, grow fastest and cheapest. i like the gold nugget - but want something that really scavenges like the sailfin. i find they eat what ever when ever and grow fast lol royal plecs need wood and dont eat much fish food scraps. scarlet woud look nice, loved them - but hff doesnt have one, i dont buy it until i can see it. wtih plecs with they come in, there are different names!
  10. Looking at a cleaner for my jar tank. Want a pleco that inevitably will get large. Growth medium to fast. i didnt wanta n ormal plec as they are too boring haha but something nice patterns, gets big, looks nice that would eat debris of pellets and stuff, as well as some algae on the glass. Any suggestions.
  11. fish food has much research that goes into them. Either that or its fantastic marketing. Its debatable. NLS has the best value vs quality i know of. if you keep fish like tinfoils, silver sharks, giant gourami... certain fish dont need fancy food, i have succesfully raised them to big sizes, healthy, good colour with aqua one economy works out to about $12/kg it hink roughly. but if you have things that have nice colours, africans, south american cichlids, even silver arowana, then good qual food is key. I have noticed also, Brands like HIKARI grows fish much faster, you feed less, less poo. fins grow further out than normal. I found that some of my fish grew fins when you think their fins are full grown, it literally pushes them out. NLS is great, good feedack from everyone i nkow, my clowns love them. but i did an experiment, i trained my aro to eat both, with zest.... so what ever i fed, it will consume it no matter what, but putting both pellets together, the fish still prefers Hikari. when thats out then it will eat the NLS.. For my aros, i will stick to Hikari sticks, now there is that super hikari stick thing, thats awesome. but for the rest, a mix of NLS and economy pellets. Clown loaches PURE NLS THERA A supplemented by a home made mix of beef heart mix. If you want cheaper, calculate how much food costs if you buy it fresh. You acn buy prawns at$16/kg. Beef heart $6 per kg, fish at 15/kg. if you mix and match, blend it to a fine paste, freeze, this can be a good alternative, also really beefs up fish using the combo of both. there are a lot of ways of going cheap on food, but you have to weigh up time vs cost and vitamin content. most if not all aro keepers will say that feeding a mix of pellets and meaty food like shrimp grows aro best. I would have to agree. depends on the fish. QUESTIONS: what fish do you keep?? what food do you feed?
  12. haha didnt know my long winded responses are so appreciated haha i guess it reflects my passion and excitement and shows exactly how much thought i put into everything you are welcome :bounce:
  13. clown loaches is a fish you can manage easier. currently mine are small, i got a 1cm or just under growth in 4 to 5 weeks, i can probably maintain half cm to 1cm max for the next 4 to 6 months maybe 7 to 8 months. after they reach 4 inches maybe 5 niches, growth is much slower. to get your clown loaches 30 cms, it will take YEARS. i mean YEARS, a good 5 years, maybe even more. some say a decade plus! none the less, long term plan is to hav the large clown loaches in a massive tank set up. long term, i am gonna get a 3000 Litre plus tank. school of 88 or 101 will be perfectly happy in that. a pleco, some mid swimmers. then maybe (of course thsi is a lon term plan) maybe a high Grade Red aro/or gold xback in this massie tank wtiht he clown loaches pleco and mid swimmers, maybe dats actually. a few of them 4 to 5. OR a school of 8 silver aros, and the clown loaches. dont nkow yet. for now, they will be fine in the 1200L, filtration is sufficient. however when they read 3 to 5 inch average in size. I can see some are growing way faster than others, about 60% are growing fast, the rest are a little bit slower, the food they will eat will be massive amounts haha excited!
  14. yeah, russel doesnt have the ring to it though!
  15. after watching Gladiator last night - My new jar is called Maximus
  16. close! thats heaps. what is your feeding regime? diet?
  17. its currently in a 100Gal tank approx. has the usual over filtration plus approximately a XXXload of water changes over a day period:D approximately 150 to 200% of wc a week total. done over a daily period divided into 6 times per day. long term plan, 6 to 9 months, depends on growth..... 6 foot tank by 70 by 60. probably spotted metynis and ac ommon pleco with it.
  18. pics cant post here, doesnt let me http://fishkeepers.co.nz/forums/viewtop ... =20&t=3539 eats everything already, only day 2!! ate shrimp, fd shrimp and hkari aro sticks. tried nls aro balls but its too big for it. but im sure it will eat it at some stage too, doesnt seem to descriminate. gotta make a rule though, no meaty food or fd shrimp nless it eats pellets.
  19. haha, ronnie may still have the record. not sure actually. i am saving 13 more for when oddballs come up and i will get those. either 88 or 101. 88 is a lucky number, though im not a believer it will be funny and 101 means you have more than 100:D but not sure when i will get those. just bought the jar, so will hold out for awhile unless a shipment comes in with some oddities.
  20. whats going in the 6 ponds? tropical?
  21. yeah, i dont know how to get rid of the black algae!! they keep coming back. but its ok, looks very natural i guess. they do like swiming through plants though. they seem to be ok witht he hiding spots, there are 6 major hiding spots. maybe the light is too bright for htem? but catch 22, plants need light. few tangled pieces of wood would be nice, i dont have anymore root systems.
  22. haha, the jar joke.... man, it doesnt get old well, long term plan is to upgrade the tank its in in a few months. cleared one tank already today, selling the rest, so i can make room for a 6ftx70x60 tank. which will be the jars home. limited amount of fish to go in there, this jar i have a feeling will not be as kind as my last jar. it was very feisty. yeah, its the one with the discus. eating pellets already, got themt o show me whe i was at the store haha so no training required. my black aro doesnt even eat anything but pellets, so picky but this o ne will eat what ever its given im sure.
  23. still very stressed so no pics yet. but it was in HFF Roskill, very fiesty indeed!! hope it settles soon and eats:D very silvery in colour, not the usual dark Jar. Silvery and lighter pink spots.
