  1. it is weird. no eggs are being layed, tail is fat, but not too big, not bigger than their head. they are mating, i can see ;mating marks, though never witnessed a prolonged mating ritual. any ideaS? strange. and they are big. male is huge, female is just a lil smaller. should i separate during winter and re introduce, they are currently together.
  2. Hi All i purchased leopard geckos roughly 3 years ago, after 18 months, i started to attempt breeding. mating is occuring but no eggs are produced. anyone here have experienced purchasing leopards about that time, and cannot get them to breed? i have Hans' 2 leopards, im gonna put them in the mix, one of them is definitely a stunted female from hatching. just doesnt grow. the other is growing well so hopefully they can breed.
  3. sounds great i love corys! wish they would get bigger though, imagine a cory but 7 inches long:D i love the look of them so dinosaur like with the mini armour plating. but ornates would eat them! lol
  4. take pics of the side when you can:D looking forward to it, whats your set up like?
  5. id be happy if mine turn out like that!!
  6. no, definitely love them, just didnt wanna dedicate a tank to t hem. i spent ages trying to find awesome spcimens and rare ones! love discus! always have:D side pics, side pics! side pics!! side pics!!!
  7. http://www.arofanatics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=466743&page=2 check ou the red in the first post of this link! wow true colours under white light, with a tanning or pink light, that is almost solid red!
  8. beauty! love the look of discus, too bad they dont eat other animals lol love them!!! love the blue diamonds, also cos their colour is so solid and shiny:D
  9. my problem i believe is just my changer, i have turned it down as mys tocking has dropped dramatically, its got no issues. when the other 1200L is gone from the system, i will move from 4 to 3 300w jagers. thats ok, problem soslveD: mind you, the fluval looks fricking awesome though!
  10. deepnds. in a tower sump or canister in my opinon there is a balance between flow through media and water exposure to media. you can have less flow through and the wter spends longer in the media and will work, or you can have such fast flow, that the sheer turnover will also work. or both! would probbaly better. if its packed, means the water will diffuse and end up touching more media than if its lose and just easy to pass through. but you also dont want it so the flow is constricted. in a canister, the flow cannot be tooooo tight with media, or else you wont get suction power for mechanical. but for a sump tower, i reckon pack it in, the water has no choice but to go down the bottom. gravity is your friend there. so if you tightly pack it, as long as its not pooling at the top and filling up the tower, then youa re fine.
  11. actually they would be. in sects will usually feed on plants or meat depending if its a herbivore or carnivore. for example, crickets will feed on anything they can find on the floor, from meat to vegetation. vegetaion contain vitamins, anti oxidants, minerals etc. grass for example - contains a high level of vitamin c, calcium, chlorophyl in itself has many trace and minerals. locusts protein is just protein, its really what it absorbs into its bloodstream and flesh and what it eats that boosts its goodness by feeding it to fish. same as in the wild, fish will eat other fish and vegetation and insencts, the arowana eats the fish, the smaller prey is gutloaded already. insects contain in its guts what the arowana would NEVER get in the water. birds and mice too. if it falls into the water due to injury or accidentally or baby birds. they are fed nutritious food by their parents.
  12. anything that falls in the water, fish, crustaceans. they have a pretty varied diet. al9ot of insects
  13. i gues in theory it should work the same, but i dont know - its difficult to know unless you try.
  14. http://www.hagen.com/uk/aquatic/addinfo/fluvaleseries.cfm jsut wondering, are these as good as jagers? seems more precise in terms of controlling temps. says 300w only heats 375 litres. while jagers 300w is rater for more. but in theory, the same wattage would literally produce same heat in the water.....
  15. my silver used to eat the green frogs we got here, so i fed him regularly, he wasnt harmed by it, the green frogs we get here have a natural anti cancer and anti septic slime coating. thats probably what doesnt taste good for the aro, but starve an aro for a few days, guaranteed it will eat it. im happy with locust, love seeing them eat locust! i reckon if anything we need superworms, mroe meat to skin ratio! but mealworms, second best thing to superworms lol, aros love them and you can gut load them. i also found mealworms dont turn into beetles as quickly if you have constant food. when you sto feedng them, they turn to beetles faster. the aro also eats beetles:D so its not a waste anyways.
  16. :slfg: i wouldnt say they are not on the ball i believe its due to cost. i put alot of effort in to caring for my red, mostly because its a $5k plus fish, if it wasnt, i dont believe i would fuss over it as much. a green here is $500. in asia, that green would be worth less than 100 maybe even 50! a silver in philippines where i am from is less than $5 nzd, its a childs arowana started, here we pay 90 to 150! quarantine of course is factored in, they have no quarantine in asia! its the cost thats why we fuss over them. we value them more so than the rest of the world that gets them so easily. perception really, im sure the asian and uk and canadian keepers of aros are just as loving to their fish as we are lol but they dont make such a big fuss as its relatively common
  17. balanced diet is ALWAYS gonna win the day. pellet manufacturers claim their pellets is the only thing you need. but i believe in a variety, but pellets i thin bulk up fish majorly. the amount of protein and nutrients is underniable. as for bullfrogs, yeah no one seems to properly gutload. if it was me, i would feed gut loaded crickets to the frog, gut loaded mealworms, and when the frog is absolutely fat and full, then feed that, you basically triple the goodness. or even drip vits into its mouth and put pellets into the frog by putting it on a vibrating dish. anyways, the picture sof big big aros i see have a variety of diets.
  18. yeah i cant help to go back to science. why is bullfrog better than prawn or pelletS? i dont know that much about bullfrogs but they are jsut meat and bones... protein. i reckon the cool thing bout frogs is taht you can gut load them awesomely! last tiem i tried, rtg did not like teh taste of our green frogs.
  19. yeah there is nothing special about feeding bullfrog, but the high content of calciumperhaps? if you fed lots of food it will bulk it up as well. my opinion. protein content is key from what i have seen. nice fish though
  20. could be chronic amonia exposure if you had a amonia spike or exposure for a while. that can retard their appetite and lead to chronic problems perhaps.
  21. what synodontis can we get? i have seen cuckoo featherfin decorus angelicus what else is there? also, is there any problem mixing different types of synos in one tank? (just curiosity and exploring future projects:)
  22. sounds like a plan:D If black aros are in high demand then that would be worthwhile. i guess producing lots of babies would be key. yeah the reputation of asian aro keepers is hard to break through, sterilising,k i hear some discus breeders do that to, but i believe it may just be rumours - but who knows, protecting their assets would be extremely impotant, i would do it to protect my stock if i had a farm i guess. i think breeding them would jsut be cool! fun in it self. i guess comes down to this. if you keep and breed fish formoney, you will be disappointment 99% of the time. i have met many discus breeders that dont do it anymore as the cost and time far outweigh the proceeds from the sale. Maybe one day i will go insane and set up a para pool in my garage when i end up buying a house:D
  23. yes, even then i think thats not always accurate perhaps. the method farms do oveseas is put heaps in a lage pong and they pair up,then isolate pairs and let them breed. yeah, silver, jar, black aro isnt worth while. you awnt somethign you can export. nz market is basically useless if you are basing the economicso f the operations on that. it WILL have to be export and market it in such a way that people order from you. novelty factor. i mean the novelty of having an NZ bred asian aro alone has its own selling point. you will have to come up with specimens and take it to aquarama in singapore and try to make yourself famous. a hobby for a multi millionaire... if i win lotto ill do it :happy2:
  24. haha thats crazy! no, i had to sell much of my collection! not made of money or anything. if i could i would though, breeding arowana would be awesome! i still reckon a pond on a green house is doable! solar heated water, gas back up, gas heating for the green house. i reckon doable here. silvers are easy to breed, i hear they breed them in concrete tanks and plywood tanks overseas, but the catch is you must dedicate the tank to only a pair. so kinda a waste and wont really pay to do so as the money isnt good enough. asian aro however will pay, exporting that will be worth heaps i reckon but yeah, too difficult in cold weather to be competitive. was looking at xb today, and saw a picture of a axanthic datnoid! awesome!
  25. i do not believe there would be harm in feeding mussel, make sure its raw. just general rule of thumb, dont feed cooked seafood to fish. but i dont think there would be harm, mussel is full of goodness
