  1. I havew used wasp larvae, instintictively, reptiles and fish recognise this as food. they love it. if you compare the cost of high quality pellets vs the wasp larva you get from bio supplies - its actually not that bad, however, it is fatty and low in protein compared to pellets. but its good for fish, larva and pupa has goodies in it that the adult insects may not have. but like you said, expensive:D
  2. lol ok i guess freshwater is much simpler! yes, a thermometer but i would be happy with just a ph meter fully submerged all the time so i can look at my temp with my current thermometer and ph at a glance. so that link i gave, do you think that is designed for permanent or longterm submersion in water? how do you know?
  3. too expensive, i think im gonna try to find a ph reading cheaper lol that TM auction, does anyone know if you can leae the probe permanently in the water? i dont belive there will be an issue, it looks like it is designed for such a use.
  4. just goes straight in, in my case i have 4x filter socks. i have a plastic ontainer with each corner drilled, then the holes are right above the 4 socks. works perfect but very rudementary
  5. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=418401378 can you lease this probe in the water permanently like a typical digital thermometer? so you can get a live fiew of ph at all times?
  6. How did he do that? hahaha no seriously can you ask him to maybe send an email to you and copy and paste here? thats awesome
  7. you know, like a little probe that goes in the sump, display saying temp and PH etc anything like that, so there is live reporting of PH and temp?
  8. ..... fraser... i dont think i could deny such an allegation......... :slfg:
  9. yeah, may do that. ill see how i go - im trying to do a massive array of food this summer untill winter, want the red to be 50 to 55 cm by winter next year and give a good feeding regime frogs will add to its different type of protein intake, gutloaded, superfood:D a frog with a few crickets, worms inside it.... good super pack lol
  10. what eve ryou do, do not feed it cooked seafood or cooked flesh. always raw flesh. good luck, excited to see a pic of the monster! video even betteR:d
  11. fair call, discussion is always good. just that wiuth this, its hard to understand lol everyone has such different views.
  12. european perch, sorry european perch eats them as well as a red tail carp. those are the biggest threats in their native home.
  13. lol asking in a frog forum if their frog is safe for live feed... bad news. yeah look, what mark said, thats really it, i just couldnt put it so ..... nicely, but i do enjoy predators hunting ... it gives them stimulation too. i find that when my arowana hunts vigorously, it is much much more active than feeding frozen mealsowrms, dead prawns. Insects work yes, but i have a finite amount of them. TO be honest, i am inclined to get rid of them as the care for them may seem a hassle, thats whats stoping me but if no buyers then i will raise them and see then. ill let you know how it goes in my trial, before i feed to my red, i am trialling first. yes, correct, i am not gonna dismember them myself, it is a food chain thing, its just that some dont like it. I have met people who dont want to watch a goldfish get taken out... but to me its just a gold fish and i see it as fish food. anyways - i am trying to fob it off and just buy a bucket load of goldfish instead, but its not easy to sell. If it sells quickly then thats fine, if not then i will try it hopefully the care for frogs isnt as much hassle as i hear it is from you guys im not feeding mice, but frogs is part of their natural diet anyways.
  14. its really a personal thing. i cant explain because you cannot always bestow a sentiment and MAKE people see wha tyou see. its not be all and all, all through out i am considering getting rid of the frogs as the hassle of keeping them is indeed a hassle. no other reason to be honest, just the hassle. the thread was about who has fed it to fish, not to be lectured on your sensibilities - and not to convert you to mine.
  15. the notion of just growing the tadpoles large and then ridding of them by selling them off cheap has crossed my mind. who wants to buy 60 tadpoles ?
  16. yeah, look i cant really explain it, i bought the tadpoles and couldnt back out of the deal so im stuck with them. mgiht as well try but like is aid have a plan, wont try on brutus
  17. you cant really understand, each to their own ay. i like watching it hunt different things man. i have locust, crickets, fish, mealworms and hopefully frogs. its something that some wont understand - if frogs prove to be a pain, i will just sell it cheaply to flog it off, dont really care. parasite wise - dont think they have parasites if you raise them from tadpoles and flies and live food you feed tehm from reputable suppliers are fine, as i feed thsoe to the arowana too. its only when they hang around and eating flies feeding on poo and other crawling things in the wild. also arowanas and most fish are geared to eat live food. but like i said, you wont understand, its a personal thing ay, i just get a kick out of seeng it hunt different things.
  18. to be honest, i dont really care what to feed them, what is the cheapest? thought flies would be. mealworms? i am unsure how many would survive to adulthood and it is my little experiment. i am not trying on my own fish first, i will have a trial case. dont really wanna go into it:) seeing that no o ne has given feedback on feeding arowanas and fish frogs.... i will have to find out myself. what would be the most cost effective way to feed them?
  19. sorry my bad jardinii in australia eat them, our pest fish here are known to have them too. but mainly in australia i read that european pike eat them. maybe i misread but i read an article saying that european pike can be invasive and has eaten them
  20. also, if it doesnt work out - i can just sell it off to make up what i spent on them. Im sure lfs or someone will buy frogs for $1 each! i dont care if i sell them for what i got the tads for lol i have fed these frogs to silvers in the past and they loved it. in the wild, jardinii arowana and even in nz, european pike are known to eat these frogs in the wild. im sure they are not toxic. also if we let kids handle them - would they be toxic?
  21. I have a plan. anyways, we can see:) yeah, the frogs will require plenty of food. Will get flies for them, lots of them, flies are relatively cheap in bulk!! cage is a large exoterra cage.
  22. from TM, just got them, got 60 tadpoles, about 4 to 5 didnt make the transition but they are eating this morning now and settled in. have a frog tank to put frogs into when they turn.
  23. tadpoles... basic care? what is the optimal temperature for them? i put them n the growing tub, and the water was 18 degrees to 19 is this too cold? they seem very inanimate in this temp, i inreased temp to about 21 to 22. in time they tub will go upt o ambient temp of garage which is about 25 ish to 27.
  24. knew telling you that would haunt me someday
  25. no, but if they are tiny locuts, hatchlings, ants can potentially kill them. i see small ants in my locust breeding cage but they seem ok. in sa ying that my eggs right now are dormant and hasnt hatched yet, hope they do soon.
