    discus help

i guess pristine water for any fish is a good thing IMO, but yes, some have more tolerance than others. the word tolerance is a funny one. i mean, it generally means they can live in it, thrive as someone said, is another thing:D no breeding, pairs if they are nice but dont want aggression. but then again, if you put many in a tank, aggression may go away? babies mostly, i like growing fish like that.
  2. really? why what did he do?
  3. 4x t8 2 aqua glo 2 power glo i find the combo good and lights up the colours.
  4. i love the tiger lotus plants. its 80 wide, 60 high. is that still considered deep? what type of plants can i get away with if i put just 4 light fixtures?
  5. Ok. setting up a new project. Discuss/Black arowana project - semi planted. Dont want too heavy planting and weighing up theoptions, heavy planting means heavy lighting = lots of money. i dont want to do that. was thinking: Tank is 2400x800x60 aprox 1200 litres. currently its got 2x 4ft t8 aqua glow. i plan on having black aro and discuss, will need to highlight the colours, and can only do that if i put more lighting. was thinkoing 4bulbs in total for this tank - will sufficiently show the colours of the discuss and black aro, with the white substrate silica sand, this will reflect more light up and making the tank look lighter. any ideas? i was thinking of t5, but fittings are friggin expensive! can i get these diy? or cheaper? i have metal halides from warren ages ago, havent used it, but they are 150w each bulb, thtas alot of overkill and power. what plants can i plant in there that does not require TOOO much light and easy to care for? valisneria? congo fern? because the sand wont be thick enough, i will have pots glass pots filled with sale wtih open bottoms to plant in.

ok, you know some say that discus need pristine waters. can someone give me the lowdown please? experienced people. considering a discus project. something new. water params? nitrate tolerance etc.
  7. can i have contact details of that guy that imports discuss? last name tan? he has a website too, if someone can forward that to me. thanks
  8. thanks. the dels are fat! when you drop off the ornate, can see the progress i made with the TT eel! daily it would eat 6 to 10 pieces of shriimp PLUS beef heart:D
  9. oh ok, fair enough. thought id get involved:D your ornate is getting bigger and bigger! gotta come see your jar sometime
  10. recent pics of my fishies. http://picasaweb.google.com/richardvanw ... irectlink# let me know if you get problems. friend of mine took photos and posted here. the american tiger i got the same time as david - but when i got it , i fed 3 times a day every day as much as it could consume for 6 months:D now a big daddy! with a oddball pattern.
  11. i agree when i used to look for tanks, i would type in LARGE or HUGE on TM many comes up as 200 to 400 lol baby tanks! so i had to browse all of them lol awhiel back, there was a 4000 litre tank i think, with steel frames and was on a forklift
  12. noodles. bio balls in a canister is really somewhat useless. the noodles. in fact, noodles may even by a cheaper smooth noodle. if it is, also almost useless. better to invest in roughly aquaone ceramic bio media.
  13. in all honesty. its because people need to be told if they are a moron. not enough people speak their mind. not enough people tell others the truth if that person is being a scally wag. hence the decay of society. (another topic for another day) anyways. as an example. i was buying a blu ray on TM, saw one for 25, good price! i was asking questions, where pick up was, if its nz region and condition etc. then i saw it increased in price few hours later. this person obviously saw that there is interest and before i could bid no reserve - which i was gonna do a buy now anyways, he increased it. so....... i told him nicely that he is a poo. changing the price realising he under priced himself slightly. but hence that is the appeal. i would have saved 10 dollars but its second hand. out of principle, i would now buy a brand new one - pay 10 dollars more froma reputable retailer like jb hi fi. ............... i had to tell him he was being a scally wag, otherwise, he would think its ok. 8)
  14. this is normal. they communicate that way, like most fish, colour is key to communication. maybe its a sign of submission. my two largest ones, when together, one is always almost faded ... the smaller one.
  15. viewtopic.php?f=28&t=44231 thisis my set up looks rudementary as in not shiny and fancy, but works like a charm, reliable and most of all, cheap! i have also used this system for when i bred flower horns...
  16. oh yeah my system is not continous also. it switches on and off during the day multiple times, and you specify to your requirements how often and how much it does during the day.
  17. manual system is really a bucket system. if you are gonna have multiple tanks, last thing you wanna worry about is a manual system. first: 1) do you already have the tanks or still to be made? 2) if made - are they full of water now and being used? i can set you up a auto water changer for breeding tanks wether it be your tanks are total of 300 litres over 5 tanks or total of 10,000 litres. i have a automatic water changer that changes my 2x 1200 litres and 1x 260 grow out tank. no buckets. just does it daily, slowly. saves power, stress on fish too. if you are interested, then let me know, if you are in auckland or not far, come around and ill show you how i have done it. relatively siimple, and best ofall cheap!!!!! and the hours you save will pay dividends later.
  18. yeah many of them are in small tanks, because they look small, its deceiving. little do they know, that these fish can almost double in size in first year from 2 to 3 inches size - if given the right conditions, feeding. sad. it looks stunted, but may still grow a little. eye balls popping out and the body loks caved in like a somalian child with a collapsed abdominal muscle
  19. To be honest, the topic seemed like an emergency. google can fix that query rapidly. this forum is generally for more ivolved issues i believe.
  20. i seen exact same set up in thailand siam paragon mall awesome, takes socialising away though:D\
  21. thats ok then i reckon both set ups are good. as long as you utilise both wet dry and submerged. wet dry trickle is supposed to be extra good right? excited to see the set up.
  22. Prefer set up one. reason is that you will get maximum filtation by re routing into the bio chamber, but as for the third set up you posted, how does the water spray from the top of the bio media? spray bar? pump? why not a tower format?
  23. it really depends on the fish you keep. a 400 litre for me is way to small for the company i keep. but for you it might be ok. whats putting people off large tanks is cost, maintenance, food cost, fish cost. ALL COST related. not sentiment. SO if someone was to say to you....that you woudl not have to fork out the cost - or maintain it, then you would probably do it if you had the space. so..... in saying what i said above, everyone would LOVE to have a big tank, its only a matter of priorities of what you spend your resources on:D 8)
  24. yeah, depth of tank and heigh and swimming space for aro. silver aro or asian aro? depending on what species, silverf really needs much space and probably prefer no wood unless youhave a mega monster tank. if the aro spooks, or attacks another fish and jets in the water, could puncture eye ball in sharp bits of wood.
  25. tiger barbs can be agro to other fish. that might cause it. fin rot can be caused by a WOUND opening up by attacks too. mucous goes away and infection onsets. bad water quality. insufficient filtration. test kits are crucial i dont test my water often at all. but thats cos i know what my filters are capable of. but, i think everyone should have them.
