  1. They'll be fine if they survive it. I just had a similar thing happen with some glowlight tetra fry. Some may have perished but the strong ones survive. Have you got the baby brine shrimp going now 2fishy? Are they eating them? I just started to feed mine some yesterday. The fry hung around at the top for ages now there doesn't seem to be as many and they are mostly lower down, not sure if some have perished or just that they've spread out around the bowl.
  2. You should be keeping discus in there so the water changes don't go to waste
  3. Anyone work in a lab? I wanna know what the secret ingredient is.
  4. Yeah the peat probably isn't required for the likes of the lemon tetra and the glowlight tetra, but if you want to get them going that's what you use. It's a great product that softens the water and reminds many fish of their blackwater homelands so is great to get them spawning. It is widely accepted that light makes eggs fungus, so to answer your question Vickie I'd say it isn't infertility or water quality but light that caused them to fungus. But if you put them in a seperate barebottom tank the water quality will be much better too and makes it easier to do water changes and care for the fry. Use a towel/blanket/blaksak rubbish bag/cardboard box etc to cover the tank at night with the bride in groom in the tank. Allow a small amount of light in in the morning then they will spawn. Once they've finished after a few hours remove them and cover the tank fully again. Add some methylene blue (hard to overdose) to prevent fungus and lock even more light out.
  5. WELL DONE!! looking good
  6. Even 1/4 teaspoon yeast will do. It's the alcohol the yeast produce in the end that kills the mix so the more yeast the quicker it will die.

    algae help

Some large water changes should help, but yeah if it's cyanobacteria treat as evil said.
  8. Lemon tetras are one of the most promiscuous of tetras (up there with serpae tetras) so seperate males (bolder black anal fin) and females for 2 weeks then put them in a dark breeding tank by themselves, pH slightly acidic. Take them out after they've spawned, eggs hatch 24-48 hrs.

    Itchy fishies!

Hi Caper, didn't realise you had kids, coming in useful tho yeah? I just treated two of my discus tanks for flukes because they had been scratching for quite a while. Sounds like flukes to me in which case praziquantel is best as it kills flukes and fluke eggs. As it is very difficult to get that here I treated with potassium permanganate, 2mg/litre (a teaspoon holds 7g), treat 4 hours minimum. Used at this concentration it won't kill your biofilter so you can leave your filter going. It's now 12 hours after treatment and all are looking good. You can get it from a chemist. Good luck.

    New Fish!!

Wicked Sounds you have provided a great home for them, good luck
  11. Time for a sticky in the DIY section!!!!!!!! I wonder how many houses would be burnt down and interesting headlines in newspapers there'd be? :bounce: "she'll be right mate"
  12. Alan doesn't that equal 48 tanks? 16 x 3. Tsarmania, I just put a 45x20x20cm tank in the hot water cupboard with glowlight tetra fry in it. It heats the water there to a nice consistent 27-28degrees celsious. Nice cheap option too.
  13. I just checked my female last night and i saw this spot also, she spawned only a few days ago so I assume she's just filled with eggs again already to replenish the lost ones. How long do they usually spawn for does anyone know? When i took my female out she was hiding so I assume the male was done with her, much like humans too lol
  14. Hi Fishboi, yes it is a great site isn't it? Where abouts in NZ are you from? Do you want to add it to your profile perhaps? I don't know much about the UV sterilisers, just that the longer the contact time the water has with them the better. I just wanted to ask how good you found it? Did it keep your pond totally algae and disease free? When you say it was doing okay but not great, what could have been better? Cheers
  15. Soaking in a solution of potassium permanganate is really good too. You buy it as a powder and only need small amounts to add to water. When it's purple colour it's strong and kills anything organic. It's useful to make a light (pink) solution and soak new plants in it for ½ an hour to kill any snails, snail eggs, and any other bugs like leeches? eww reminds me of that stand by me movie hehe.
  16. I heard that finger test is used in psychology examples. Because if you put your finger in when you're cold, the water seems relatively warm and vice versa. It totally depends on the temperature of your skin. It's different when comparing tank to tank to tank because it's almost certain one of them will be at the right temp. Dave (waikato pres) said he nearly killed an angel once because he and a mate were temporarily putting some fish in a bath and thought 'it wasn't warm enough'. In saying that I have a few times put my hand in a tank and thought that feels way too cold, and i check and the heater is unplugged from the daily water change the day before.
  17. You're deadright Billaney, do you work in a call centre too? Good on you Caryl
  18. Haven't heard of any of those turkey terms! Not native to NZ as far as I'm aware, have heard of the baster (aka big syringe right?) tho from online reading. Does the female show this tube even if she is not in sight of the male? e.g not floating in a seperate smaller tank within a larger tank that the male would be in.
  19. The dimensions of lowndsie's tank for us metrics here is 240cmx60cmx70cm. Is it 60 or 70 top to bottom (height)?
  20. I use water that's been aged for 24 hrs (heated to tank temp and aerated). If I need more water I fill it up and add hot from tap to get right temp, and add water ager. $3.15 for 120ml, brand is Blue Circle. Stress coat is probably better but this is best value for money i've found for a chlorine removing chemical. Like Ronnie says not worth the risk ay?
  21. Were these kept outside Caryl? What temp was it at? I've tried a few times with some outside in a 2 foot and green water and salt, but each time they've died off within a day or two.
  22. I think you'll just have to wait it out, can't force it to the top. Try adding some melafix for it's sore fins and some peat to calm it down and make it feel better.
  23. Haha yeah I was thinking they might need to watch that show "Cold Turkey" to help them through. Everyone, add a dry old wrinkled up banana to your bucket/bath/pond and you will have it teaming with mossie larvae within a few weeks. I tried this recently with a couple of bananas and was amazed how many mossies there were in there especially as it is getting cooler. Not only does the banana make the water very 'green', but the smell attracts the mosquitos to it like bees to flowers. On the same token, if you've just eat a banana you are 5x more likely to get bitten by a mosquito than someone that hasn't so if you have eaten one i recommend walking around draped in a mosquito net. Mosquitos pretty much die off during winter as it's too cold, but the good news is daphnia like it colder.....so time to invest
  24. Personally I treated with white spot cure and malkon at normal dose and all was well. But these fish were in a 300L heavily planted tank and were well settled in. They were also quite large and were very healthy before getting the whitespot. They got the whitespot from adding water that was cooler than their tankwater with their 40% weekly water change, so now I preheat it.

    Rotten smell!

I think Blue is on the money there, although the molly could have contributed to the smell. The bacteria that forms in small pockets under the gravel is called anaroebic and it actually converts nitrate into nitrite instead the aerobic bacteria we want which does the opposite. So you definitely don't want it and the best way to get rid of it a thorough plumbing of the gravel with your gravel vacuum. It's common to smell a bad rotten egg kind of smell as it gets released into the atmosphere. It's rarer in heavily planted tanks because the roots move around and absorb nutrients down there.
