  1. Hey ljtan55, did you wash the filter/s out with cold tap water or warm tank water? If you used cold it would've killed the beneficial bacteria and your fish could be exhibiting nitrite poisoning, I've seen a couple of my discus do this once when the filter wasn't properly cycled. It's your filters that cycle, not the tank, so major water changes doesn't affect the bacteria, there is little or none in the water body itself. With undergravel filters the good bacteria is in the gravel as opposed to a filter sponge. Did you vacuum the gravel? Maybe this disturbed detritus from the bottom and has made it cloudy, is it white or green cloudy? If you haven't already would be a good idea to clean out the filters to help remove it. HTH
  2. Very nice mate, I'm sure they will colour up in a week or so, take some pics then. Great to see the beautiful quality discus you have there overseas. Like the leopards.
  3. You're welcome, goodluck bud
  4. Hehe.....excellent ideas flowing here. Eruptions are so hot right now, put me down for some :bounce:
  5. yes alanmin is right, I believe he means most councils make the water alkaline so that there is no acid to wear away the utility/water pipes.

    A pic to share

Very nice, what is it? Goldline Royal?
  7. books = lol. lots of things in books are good but they get outdated so quickly they become no longer relevant. they use to think discus "needed" to have pH 6.5 or would die, so people messed with their pH a lot and bought heaps of products to lower it but just ironically ended up killing their discus due to all the pH swings. discus do come from acidic water though (6-6.5), so if you naturally have acidic water that is best for them as it replicates their natural environment much more closely. what people know now is that stability is the key, not the swings. it's like you'd get use to living in thailand if you went there, but you wouldn't like nz climate one day then thailand climate the next and so on...

  9. lol did anyone notice in the 3rd pic up from the bottom one you see a couch outside and a corner of a tank. Too many tanks inside and no more room so now have tanks waiting their turn outside
  10. Guess that answers that one NZdiscusman had some pretty big (wild?) catfish there when I was last up, not sure if he still has them.

  13. Nice freshwest, liking them. Are they homebreeds?
  14. From what i've heard it works, but you should only need to it add it at the start, then once your filter media has a bacteria colony you don't need to add it. Without the stuff the cycle takes 4-6 weeks, I believe using it just reduces that time a couple of weeks. But I haven't used it myself.
  15. Wow Ant that is very very nice! Once you have filled out the front left and those other gaps, and trim the stem plants it will surely be a great entry in an aquascaping contest :bounce:

  22. You should have a big tank and replicate it's natural environment as much as possible if you're going to keep it
  23. What price are you paying?
  24. Sorta like they did in the old days where the slaves would test the food before the kings and queens ate it
