  1. Thanks Ryan... I think I need a bigger tank.. :tears:
  2. My Giraffe cichlid died this morning. He is about 3 years old. Around 20CM. In the past few weeks until yesterday VERY healthy and active. Same as other cichlids in the display tank. Suddenly this morning I found him laying dead at the bottom of display tank. :tears: :tears: :tears: I suspected was kill by big boss front... As he killed 4 other male fronts already... But when I took him out there is no wound on the body or tail or fin... NO sign of attack. But I noticed some unusual white color map shape marks on his face. His body is dark blue color for some reason....Poisoned  ? Do I need to worried about other cichlids in the same tank? A massive water change? (havent done water change for a week, I normally do water every second week). I havent added any new fish into the tank for several months. There are about 30 other tanks mates in the display tank. Size range from 10cm to 25CM... Feed on NLS only. Anyone any idea? How to treat? Thanks in advance, much appreciated !....
  3. I know I probably need to post this at disease section. But I trust we do have more Cichlid experts viewing this forum here than disease section so I'd try here first. 4. :nfs: Love the rocks and dragon blood looks great!!!
  5. I would suggest to go with 1500 X 50H X 60W instead of 60H X 50W. If you havent made that tank.. More space in Depth than height is important for Malawis.. they dont use much up space anyway mostly stay around bottom area.
  6. All male tank would be nice. I would say if your 450L is long rectangular tank rather than cube shape you probably can get around with it. But some fish become pretty rare now like Red empress they used to be very popular and lots around. Especially a good line of Red Empress... I've been looking for some good quality and numbers of Red Empress for a while but still hardly to find any good ones. Let me know if you come across some good ones. :bggrn:
  7. Problem sorted by adding an extra wave maker on the opposite side corner to the intake nozzle. Wave maker is pretty powerful 3000L/H. Now I have CF1000 intake nozzle on left hand side bottom and output on left hand side top. Output is pointing 45 degree downwards. Wave maker is at right hand side bottom. Now I have STRONG water movement in the tank. I can barely see ANY waste in the tank ANY time  :dnc1: I think the string water movement will keep my fishy moving all the time therefore keep them slim with good shape..... :bggrn:
  8. Yeah, I have black chief marking on face holding before. How to Sex African Cichlids - Venting
  9. It could be hybrid of Socolofi kind. But my Pseudotropheus Socolofi juvenile does display some zebra marking on the body. But once they reach adult the whole body display pure light blue especially the dominant male. I would suggest keep eyes on them until they full grow. Both male and female should looks like http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/p_socolofi.php Male are normally much bigger can over 10 CM. Female Around 8~10cm. If they still displaying the zebra marking then they are hybrid.
  10. Yep, the adult powder blue has beautiful light blue color through out the body but top and bottom fin with dark black color. I sold my breeding pair two years ago which I shoudnt :dnc1:
  11. I'm pretty sure it is not a electric blue.... Looks like to me it is Pseudotropheus Socolofi, powder blue cichlid. I breed these fish before. but still could be some close hybrid of powder blue.
  12. I am using 3000L/H and 6000L/H Sunsun wave makers. They work out pretty well for me. 24/7 for two years no problem. I think they are 6W and 8W. Pretty small power consumption. Cost $25~$35 on trademe.
  13. Water flow (circulation what ever you want call it) is pretty important in Cichlid tank from my experience. Its not just make the water moving and carry all those waste to the intake. But also keep fish happy. FYI I have FX5 (3500L/H) and a wave maker (6000L/H) in my main 800L tank. I have CF1000 (1000L/H) and a wave maker (3000L/H) in 160L bow front tank. 905(L)x450(W)x655(H)MM. I hope this helps.
  14. :nfs: ...Nice rocks.. I am wandering where we can get those Texas holey rock in Auckland?....
  15. Well.. In my case I have CF1000 on 90cm L x 45cm W x 66cm H. Curved front tank. Intake and output at left hand side corner. I was thinking to put big river round rocks stack up in the back to give plenty hiding space. As this is my Malawi project I am going to put all of my Malawi cichlids into this tank. I think you can only tell by gave it try...
  16. Yep, it is primed and piped properly inside canister. It is a second hand CF1000. So maybe replace impeller? I was cycling the tank the entire week. I have to say CF1000 is a pretty quiet canister compares to FX5. Well..may be because FX5 is much powerful. Just water flow is a bit weak. I havent put any rocks into the tank yet just coral sand. So a little bit worry about circulation after tank is stocked. All those waste ...
  17. hmmm... sorry to hijack this thread. But My CF1000 has similar setup as yours. Intake and output both on the left hand side corner. It has spray bar and water flow from the output is pretty weak. I am wandering should I place the output pointing upwards or downwards to have a better water circulation towards the intake nozzle? Is it the best way to do it I just use silicon to cover those holes if I want to seal the spray bar? BTW, tank is 170L and 90cm long curved front JEBO790R. Cheers
  18. I found my frontosas like to hide under the rock too. It makes me want to remove all the rocks in my tank.... They always stay close to the bottom. I have huge top water space wasted! I found Malawis are much more active than fontosa, they swim every where in the tank. The big giraffe is not afraid of anything... When I come close to the tank they just jump on and shake their tail like a dog... Bite my figer when I put figer in the tank before feeding... I may try change tank layout and see what happens..
  19. :nfs: Good luck on your next bacth.
  20. Hard to tell what mix is this hybrid. But I have to say it is not one of those nice looking hybrid.
