    Carbon Bags

Just a thought, for those who would prefer to use a fluidiser. If using a high quality effective carbon, in a fluidiser, and only changing it once a month, there is the very real risk that Fay refers to, of suddenly stripping the water when new carbon is put in, and causing distress to the livestock. However, there is a way around this. The fluidiser can be put on a timer, and for the first few days just run for perhaps an hour per day. This is slowly increased until it's going full time after a couple of weeks.

More awesome pics! Some of these pics would do justice to a publication such as National Geographic.

Ha! Think I recognise that second pic! But totally cool Cracker, in particular that top pic is an awesome close up!

Yes actually one thing from these arguments it does make people ferret around and find a lot of info. Also ( surprise ) I do have more respect for iduncan than may be immediately apparent despite having different ideas on some topics. The reality is it is nearly impossible to fairly conduct such a comparitive experiment as so many variables are involved. For this reason, even though "anecdotal evidence" is often frowned upon, if there is enough of it, I'm happy to use it. Much of what we now know in the hobby, started out as anecdotal evidence. Yes! Cool Huh!! The only one of my avatars not in my tank

    flatworms

They are photosynthetic so just sit there sunbathing all day. Breed faster the higher the nutrients, but don't need much. 6 line wrasse will eat them I've seen mine do it. However the wrasse will only eat a few before tireing of them so will only eradicate if there is a small population. One suggestion would be use Flatworm Exit, 2 treatments a week or so apart, then use a 6 line to clean up any survivors there may be. The big disadvantage flatworms have is they have to expose themselves to light during the day to allow photosynthesis, and this makes them vulnerable to the wrasse, in my tank there was just a few & he got them all.

OK well here we are getting into an area where there is disagreement, so just take this post as my opinion only, but I'll offer it. Yes, these are real live bacteria cultures. The debate is because one school of thought (correctly) assumes that if there is anything in the tank available to bacteria to use, sooner or later bacteria will turn up that use it, so why dose bacteria. The explanation I got from an overseas microbiologist who is also a reefer, is that a culture of many bacteria types, such as exist in a reef tank, are at war with each other, in many ways. There is competition for food, chemical warfare, direct attacks on each other, etc. All this can result in that the tank can move towards being colonised by a few dominant bacterial types, but not nessecarily the BEST types to achieve what we want. Therefore, dosing live cultures of selected bacteria can assist bacterial biodiversity and effect efficient nutrient reduction, thereby enhancing not just coral colour but also the health of the tank generally. I have heard only good reports from users of Prodibio, not one bad comment yet. And yes, a live bacterial culture is an important part of the Zeovit system, although there are other components to zeovit, including a bacterial food, and other things. The Zeovit bacterial culture is claimed to include several bacteria that will ensure that, in the manufacturers words, a "chain" of nutrient breakdown will be maintained, along with supplying coral food. However, every time I mention Zeovit an argument breaks out, I'm hoping that won't happen this time now the rules are being enforced, but doubt it. What I'll say is that while some doubt the manufactureres claims by not only Zeovit, but other bacterial systems as well, there is no proven reason to doubt the claims, and as a user myself I can say that in real life practise, the product has done exactly what it states it will do. UV and bacterial culture dosing should not be done on the same tank at the same time obviously, they are counterproductive to each other. Looks like some appear to be having success with UV, so a person could go with one, or the other. The Zeovit manual specifically states not to use UV while using Zeovit. Having said all that, now that bacterial dosing is coming more into vogue particularly on some of the more spectacular tanks, new brands and products of it are being released all the time. Stick to the proven brands, there is nothing to stop some cowboy selling any old bacteria as a reef product. Hope that's some use, my humble opinion only.

    Nicks Tank

Well that's quite a compliment! I've seen this tank, in person it way surpasses mine, it's thoughtfully set up & everything works well. Great to see it again Nick, been a while!
  10. I'd agree with the once a year thing also. A while back I cleaned mine & it had everything in it even feather dusters and it still worked OK. Soaked it in vinegar for a few days to dissolve everything. I think they should be cleaned once a year just as a matter of good housekeeping.

Be interested to hear back in a few weeks how it goes Slappers. I think this and other bacterial supplements are the way of the future.

If you want to spend time attacking me, or attacking Zeovit, or attacking the Hanna Colorimeter, may I suggest you start another thread to do it in. This will be yet another thread you are involved in turning into an off topic argument. As previously stated -

Layton you never give up, even when wrong. They don't have a marketing manual, the one you refer to would be the user manual. And despite your dogged attempts over many threads to prove it wrong, you've never ever proved one thing in their user manual wrong. Not one. However the last UV thread turned into an attack Hanna thread, and I see no reason to allow this one to become an attack Zeovit thread. Howsabout stay with UV in this thread. I only brought up zeovit to point out that UV is not recommended with it, a point your past statements agree with.

? Not at all. You seem to have got it all wrong here. Perhaps you misread what I said.

Fay they are not recomended in a zeovit tank for the very reason you suspect, they kill the bacteria zeovit is trying to promote. Layton also has another bunch of theories as to why they may be bad in a zeovit tank. So I would not use one myself. However I'll be interested to see the longer term benefits if there are any, being used by someone like Gostface.

Well if it increases skimmate by the huge amounts you say, I may have to revise my opinion on the device. How long term is this increase in skimmate? A few weeks, or longer?

    the ''tingle''

What he means is that if there is no connection, then there is no current, no harm being done. Only if you creat a connection, either by an earth, or yourself as an earth, can the current from the leaking appliance flow, possibly doing damage. Or at least I THINK that's what he means.
  18. One reefer who doesn't post here has had a PB for more than a year, it's never fully shaken the white spot. No other fish in his tank have it they must all be immune. I suspect the PB may have difficulty acquiring an immunity like other fish. He doesn't use any treatment, but for somebody wanting to assist their PB, a little garlic, Salifert SP, or whatever seems to work, may lighten the load for it.

Thanks Fay. Actually some of those kind of posts, with just some simple but useful information, are among the most useful posts on the site. People should post more of them.
  20. Agreed - I can certainly see the temptation to attempt keeping them, wouldn't it look awesome! Imagine it at the pub as a pick up line...... "Hey Tuts, Wanna come round & see my - Nautilus?"

They are normally very responsive Fay, I wonder if it's got something to do with the computer problems they have been having? Perhaps you should try again. What's your user name there? Same as here? If you don't get any joy, drop me a pm with your details & I'll pm Bob I'm sure he will sort it.
