What is the same time? Good question I doubt there is a definitive answer. Just out of interest back when I used a 2 part additive I switched to dosing them with a 2 channel dosing pump, the one pump dosed both at the same time, but they dripped in very slowly, alk to one end of the tank, and ca to the other. I positioned them so they dripped into high flow, and ( in theory ) would be well mixed by the time they met. However the amount I had to use increased heaps, it must have been precipitation. I eventually abondoned this method. On RC they often recommend dosing one in the morning, one in the evening. I've tried 1/2 hour apart and this has seemed to work. Layton could probably explain better if he's around.
  3. Thanks, great info! I'll have to read that thread though when I've got a bit more time, tonight. Sounds just what I need though I'll certainly give this fish my very best shot.
  4. Good article Chimera. Where do i get this red nori?
  5. Thanks. Don't know what sex it is, something I read said it's pretty much impossible to tell. Yes I'm looking into sorting some kind of sponge to add to it's diet, not sure how to go about this yet. and pomereef you are correct about the lack of absolutes  Anyhow yes, I am spending a bit more time looking at the tank since I got it

    Paint

    Thanks, sounds good.
  7. Recently got this, thought I'd show it off It's a Regal Angel, when I read about them they are reputed as being near impossible to keep alive. But this one was already eating before I got it, and after a few days has settled in and eating heaps. Doesn't seem aggresive at all, and brightens up the tank

Cool! i have some of that isopropylwhatevaitis

OK thanks guys appreciate the help. I'll post back up after the jobs done let know how it went! Actually I feel a whole lot better today guys helping me! instead of the normal arguing and insults I get subjected too lately

    Magnesium

I get mine from Brendan, not sure if anyone else does them also, presumably they do. BTW I've found them very effective, I put in a little less than the recommended amount cos I didn't want to have Mg levels creeping up too high, easier to have it a tad low and manually add a bit of magnesium chloride to the water occasionally. But I hardly ever need to do that.

Just I've seen painted glass before, and the paint flakes off easy as. So provided I use enamel it will be OK?

    Magnesium

I think that's any calcium chloride, it is very easily dissolved, and if exposed to moist atmosphere will absorb water from it and eventually turn mushy.

    Paint

So any old enamel will do?

    Paint

This was discussed a few months ago sorry to bring it up again but the search function is disabled I can't find the thread. I'm wanting to paint the back of a tank a lightish blue, just wondered what people think is the best paint.

    Adding fish

One line of thought, is that during rock curing ( cycling ), excess phosphate and other undesireables are released into the water from the rock. So at the end of cycling a 100% water change should be done so a fresh start can be made with good water. Good point about the bacteria. However consider this, if a skimmer is in use, it will be taking them out of the water continuously, and that is one way to export out of the tank the phosphate and other crud they have consumed. The main bacteria we are concerned with are on and within the rock, and from this source some bacteria will be constantly entering the water column anyway.

Cool! Levels coming right! Suprising how much Mg you have to add to get levels up isn't it! This is because there is 3 x as much of it in seawater than there is calcium. Sharkey is correct you should not add Mg and Alk together. In fact they can precipitate each other out. This process is going on slowly in the tank all the time, but if you add them at the same time and there is a meeting of them in concentrated solution there can be a very fast precipitation. Mg and Ca can be added at the same time, or even mixed together if you wish, but alk, ( or baking soda ) which will take either one of them out, should not be added at the same time.

Good common sense levels, good post. Agreed. Especially on the phosphate, 0.05 or under will give good colours.

There are several variables involved, the x product to x water = x increase type formulas are very useful, but in practise other things have an effect as well. IMO use the formulas as a guide, but also just dose as required and test, then dose again if need be.

    Sad looking tank

No. It's all been made to sound way more complicated than it has to be. Start by raising Mg to between 1250 and 1400. Then add baking soda until KH is where you want it. Allow Ca to drift down to where you want it. Then adjust your reactor to maintain these levels. They may slowly get out of balance again over time, there can be several reasons for this, especially with a reactor. If that happens to me, I simply balance back up again by adding either calcium chloride, or baking soda, as required. Just always maintain Mg in the correct range.

Your judgement is obviously impaired. My guess is you are tired and stressed out by the way you are driven to doggedly defend untenable positions. But hey, don't worry. Have a cup of warm milk and go to bed. You'll feel better tommorrow! ( hopefully ) Anyhow, back to the thread, Chimera is taking the correct steps, and will resolve his tank imbalance. So - no need to worry

Temper Temper Layton, and oh, you can't spell either   Sometimes I really think you don't listen. As we've already told you, calcium dropped 100 in only 5 days. That's it! The magnesium is low, and the falling calcium is taking out the alkalinity. And to think you're calling ME an idiot
  22. ROTFL

Don't be too worried about Ca not rising despite turning up the reactor. As you are adding baking soda, just the calcium not dropping is a good sign, it may rise once you stop adding baking soda. But don't take the alk up too much while calcium is still low, as then as the reactor adds more while building calcium, the alk will go up even higher. Looks like it's all on track
  24. Tell me about it! Specially now with them baking soda eating bacteria , They can really mess everything up
