Some people modify the hood so a skimmer can hang on, but a sump is best. Part of the fun of this hobby is there is so much stuff to learn!

My tank is around 200 litres with no sump also. Got around a dozen fish, softies, LPS, and SPS corals, and an anemone. So you have plenty of options but doing it like this a quality skimmer is a MUST, or the tank will get mucky and turn green. My particular skimmer is a Deltec HOB ( Hang On Back ), but any good skimmer will do, this is contraversial but, in my opinion only, a needlewheel skimmer is the best way to go. Even with limited lighting, there are some beautiful soft corals you can keep. I have a small tank in the garage with no light at all other than what comes in the window, and mushrooms growing happily in it.

Watching at the shop since Jan!! Got to give you 10/10 for patience I don't think I could do that! Anyhow looks like it will pay off a CB that is feeding well is a rare score!

All the usual fish we keep love it, & thrive on it, it is very close to what they eat in nature. But mussels can ( so I've heard ), add a high amount of phosphate to the tank, so may be best fed in balance with other foods. Back in 1985 when I got my first saltwater fish only tank, mussel was the only thing I fed, as commercial foods were not available for marines. Had that tank for I think 4 years and they all did well on it, did not lose one fish, which is better than I've done over the last few years.

If he's eating brine, you can probably get him eating mysis, which will be a lot more nutritious, although it is messy in the tank. Another thing to try, is get some live mussels, shell & freeze them, then grate with a fine cheese grater. This can be kept in the deep freeze & fed as required, a very complete food. Need to grate with a fine cheese grater, normal cheese graters make pieces which are too big for the copperband to swallow.

Yes, I'll agree with Layton, :lol: . A 1 kh addition of baking soda will not normally raise pH to that level, but it is not impossible, could temporarily go up to 9 in some unusual circumstances. However it is more likely that your test kit is giving you the wrong number. But even if it really is 8.8. no worries, it will come back down. First thing you should do is borrow a different pH test kit to double check your one.

Tel, pH tends to fall, and keeping it high enough is the issue, so most usually a rise in pH is a good thing. A modest addition of baking soda will not normally take pH over 8.3, which is a good number.

There was a guy on Reef Central 2 or 3 years ago, who showed a pic of one he had kept for 3 years. He did not have any particular reason for his success, other than that he had a DSB and believed the placement of his dendrophena meant it was exposed to stuff being wafted out of the DSB. He said he had intitially target fed it, but did not observe any appearance of it actually "catching" what he fed, so discontinued the feeding after a few weeks. The dendrophena had also had several "babies".

I just keep it in 20 litre plastic containers, no aeration, nothing. Lasts several months no worries, the thing is to collect only when water is crystal clear so there is nothing in it too make it go off. Don't normally heat it before use, but over the last few weeks I have, due to exceptional cold.

Yes TimTam, reading & learning on the net is very good, but actually looking at a tank & learning from the owner, is worth a ton of reading especially when starting. I'd highly recommend you take Suphew up on his offer, before committing to a buying decision.

Well thanks Fay, I haven't done what you said yet because the chiller is not actually hooked up, but what you said did ring bells from the dim memories of how I did it a few years ago, I am sure it will work. Thanks for the help.

I need to re-program my Resun chiller, but have lost the instructions. Does anybody have some? My chiller is a CL-280, but I think the instructions for any Resun chiller will tell me what I need.

Coral sand can be a bit of a phosphate trap, aragonite is better. IMO a grain size of 1.7 mls or thereabouts is best for a remote DSB, but that is still debated. Maybe you could put that ball stuff in the DSB & some nicer looking stuff in the tank?
