  1. Agreed, Often it can spoil things been pretty annoyed myself sometimes. But I've been in resteraunts & seen customers going off about the service, when really the price they are paying if they worked it out the resteraunt is in a nearly impossible situation to do a good job. A while back though I got crap service in the Sheraton when I had paid a lot of money, and that time I DID complain.
  2. Alright for a man who won't even get out of bed for less than $30.00 per hour Layton  Ever worked in a resteraunt Layton? In NZ it's a really cutthroat business, so many of them start up and then go broke I don't even deal with the hospitality industry any more unless I get the money up front. The waiting staff are normally underpaid and overworked, that is, unless you go to the more expensive places. And apart from supplying services to that industry, I DO know what I'm talking about I spent 6 years running a fast food outlet, took over when it was loosing money and turned it into a highly profitable $25,000 + per WEEK turnover. Trouble is, people whinge about service, but won't pay the money. Sometimes the waiting staff in a typical NZ eatery are in a nearly impossible situation to give top service. Also the $9.00 per hour can leave them lacking motivation.

    Live Rock

You'd be surprised, those bacteria will spring back into action pretty quick. I'd just do a 100% water change then start stocking it slowly, monitoring for ammonia and nitrite as you go.
  4. Yes I'll agree with you to some extent, and I guess most people would be on your side. Even my wife gets super angry with me sometimes and calls me a wimp cos I can't be bothered to go and argue with some shyster who put one over her. But hey, I won't be having a heart attack just cos at Foodtown she got charged for 2 chocolate bars when she only got one! I do agree though some people have to get uptight about this stuff otherwise there would be no customer service at all. I think my attitude comes from my upbringing up was brought up in an environement where everybody got held to account, no slight, real or imagined was allowed to slide. And that was how I thought till I'd been away from home for a few years when I had a big attitude shift about a few things and decided not to bother sweating the small stuff anymore. Part of my business is low cost rental property, I'm dealing at the bottom end of the market where the returns are biggest if you can actually get the rent and not have the house destroyed. I just let someone off 9 weeks rent due to some major problems they were having, but it was a cheaper option for me than anything else I could have done. Once again my wife was not happy though! And I care too, but trying to extract blood out of a stone was only going to give me high blood pressure plus won't pay in the long run anyway. And don't rubbish NZ, the worst customer service I have had is in the USA, and on quite a few occasions. I believe the average NZer does care more about people and service than many in some overseas countries.
  5. I think you should just shrug your shoulders, and let it go. That way you get to - 1. Lower your blood pressure 2. Focus on stuff that really does matter 3. Live longer

    Bit of a dilemma

Yes, good thinking. by the pic, anyway, you have got quite a bit of rock in there, opening it up by removing some may look good. Also there is debate, and contradicting anecdotal evidence about toxins, but for me anyway I would tend not to have such a large leather relative to water volume. There may be no discernable effect on other corals, but it may just simply slow growth of them generally. Something I've been wondering, due to the conflicting stories about this, perhaps a coral will not manufacture much toxins if all is well, but may start to do so in response to certain triggers, such as detecting encroachment of competing corals? Just a theory , but I know for certain that some land dwelling plants do it that way.

    Bit of a dilemma

I think it would look better lower down, straight down the front from where it is now. May have to resize it to do that though. Leathers are funny things you never know how they'll react to getting chopped, most of the time you can butcher them up no worries, but sometimes they can pack a sad and just nothing you can do will save them. One thing you could do is spread your risk by chopping up several pieces & distributing it among several friends, that way it's pretty much guaranteed at least some of them will survive & grow. Just done that myself with a coral I was worried about losing, given some frags away the deal being the person will chop it in 1/2 & give me some back in a year or so when it's grown.

    Aiptasia

Got a few other problems, but cyano not one of them. Finally got phosphate down to (hanna) 0.01 or 0.00, but still got nitrate around 10 (salifert). There is a big fishload for my tank size, maybe it's that, also got a very low flow area for softies, I'm wondering if that could cause it?

    Tank tour

I'm fairly flexible so I'll try to fit with whatever the others do, you'd probably see me between Steves and Nicks place.

    ID Please?

Well I checked up & he did buy it from JoandWilly so the parentage will be as he said, thanks for the info. And thanks everyone else also, what a helpful bunch of people!

It's a guy who breeds and sells corals for a living. Now wouldn't that be the kind of job a lot of us would like!
  12. Whoa!! Didn't think that would happen!
  13. Nah - he queue jumped! Owes me one now !!

    ID Please?

Not sure if it's yours but very possible as he just bought it recently, BTW it's not my fish I'm running this thread for someone else who does not have a user name. If it's yours, what is the parentage?
  15. Ha!! Told you about triggers! Not something I'll be doing again!

    ID Please?

Hey thanks all! I'm actually asking for someone else but we'll look up some of those names to get pics and see which is the best fit. I'll update here once it's sorted. Cheers!

    Growth Photos

Must be a great feeling watching that happen. Maybe too early to say, but do you think the luminarcs have had a positive effect on growth, none at all, or negative?

Actually I wouldn't mess with triggers again after the one I had, just an evil fish eater. When I watched him, all he spent his day doing was eyeing up the other fish, waiting for a chance to strike. The other fish had to be alert 100% of the time. Even had to be careful when I fed them it got me on the finger one day a nasty bite that bled profusely. They do look pretty cool, but do limit what else you can safely have, and mine, which was just a common old tuff as old boots Niger Trigger, did have a spooking effect on a lot of the other fish, the ones it didn't eat that is he got 4 in the end! When I finally pulled it, the change in behaviour of the other fish was obvious. Of course the whole thing may have been made worse because I have a small tank.

Well I don't have the pro version, but I'll take the shots, so if I come across some software I can do it. Yes I did see the tape, I'll do something also to make sure the shots line up.

Bummer. I got really knocked out once when I lost a beautiful flame angel. According to my wife, I wasn't even worth talking to for a few days afterwards cos I would bite her head off. ( Her version anyway ) The growth shots will be interesting can it be done with a normal camera? I've got a frag really taking off at the moment funnily enough I'd just been thinking today I wish I could do a growth sequence thing on it, in some kind of movie form.
  24. The algae or whatever growing on the rocks, is basically caused because when you add food to the tank, this ends up one way or another, providing food to nuisance algae and cyano bacteria. These nutrients added when we feed, need to be removed somehow, or they build up & make the tank dirty. First thing is a protein skimmer, just that may be enough, but not always. The good ones are expensive but a cheap one may not cut the mustard. The main nutrient we are trying to control is phosphate, if we keep that low enough the nuisance algae etc cannot grow. So using a phosphate removing resin such as Rowaphos can also help.

You just got the one hatch now or did you get a replacement for the other one?
