Thanks for explaining what you mean by steady state. For openers, you don't address what you mean by "levels". Do you mean measureable levels in the water, or total level in the system, before, and after, volume is added? That is the whole crux of the question isn't it?

Really!! I think I have yet to meet one of them!

Dude I can't even understand your answer. "In the steady state"? Without any context / explanation I have no idea what you might mean by that. And, "nothing, they stay at the same level". Kinda leaves me unsatisfied. Some kind of explanation is needed.
  4. No lid, just enough water to keep the pump running, in a 20 litre pail. The inlet will suck up close to the side of the pail & restrict the water throughput, so no overflows. The water starts off cold, but gets surprisingly warm by next day, just shows how much heat that pumps can add to a tank.

The question was :- I'm keen to see you explain this also Layton, but I did not see nitrate mentioned in your "answer" at all. But hey, I do sympathise. Being forced to hang out with idiots must be rough on a mis-understood genius .

Whoa! that fuge is a real fragging showpiece! I must come & have a look.
  8. Hi Cyberfin, for me anyway I'm not very scientific about it, just whatever vinegar I've got, maybe 1 part vinegar 4 parts water, something like that. If the pump is real cruddy maybe beef it up a bit. Foodtown have a special cheap brand, from memory it's about 2 bucks for 2 litres although I might be slightly out on that.

    Thanks Reef!

Ha! Some of the humour on this site is getting soooo subtle, had me going there  . Anyway Steve, Michael has returned from the snow and is VERY impressed with the job you did on his car! .

Considering the way they heal, and they way they split when they do it naturally, I think this would be quite a high risk method, down through the mouth would be safer.
  11. Great pumps, but I've broken 2 shafts in mine I suspect they are a tad prone to it during pulling apart. Actually I've broken my laguna shaft twice! Now I find an easy way to clean it is drop the whole thing into a bucket of water & vinegar & run for 24 hours, don't pull it apart at all.
  12. Good effort! That kind of money I may even give one a shot myself!

Those brightly coloured anemones at Muriwai can work, and look pretty awesome. Used to have some and they had heaps of babies, little ones of many colours all over the tank

    Thanks Reef!

Here is an update pic on the one got cut a few days ago. Unfortunately the two bits have stayed right next to each other & I could not get a pic showing the 2 different ones but it is cut from top to bottom, still looking OK. Got some new eggs there too!
  15. Very good Layton. As you said, the second article you referenced was irrelevant, but the first one provided the most complete discourse on the sexual reproduction of E. Quadricolor that I have seen. Also reminded me it's been a few years since I've done any reading at all on the subject, good to get into it again. You are the search King
  16. Good research. Can you supply the links so we can read the whole thing?
  17. Seems like we never agree on anything! Anyhow, you will not get me into an argument over it I am certainly no expert. I must say though that through the reading I have done on the subject over the years, I have not once seen your viewpoint expressed. Except this, which is correct and is how the zoos are available in the water column for harvesting
  18. Oh well, I'm not going to argue over it you may be correct. Different to what I've read though, looks like, like me, you do not have the references to whatever it was you read?
  19. Yes. I guess the energy expended in the "mother" furnishing each baby with zoos could be better used in mass producing more eggs, and they get their own zoos. After a thorough search I can definately not find the origional article I read a few years back, but whoever wrote it was pretty definate that adult clown hosting anemones can collect zoos from the water column. The way it was explained, was that the whole thing is a survival mechanism. During some natural disaster or stress period, the anemone will expel it's zoos, and this can aid in slowing to a crawl the anemones metabolism, enabling it to last a long time in adverse conditions. After a time the anemone will have hopefully lasted until conditions have returned to normal, and will collect new zoos from the water. Not saying that's 100% gospel, that's just what the article said and did appear to me at the time to make sense.
  20. An article I read which included a bit about sexual spawning in clown hosting anemones, said the new baby anemones float in the plankton for a few days before settling, and do not have any zoos at this time, they "harvest" some from the water.
  21. True, I remember that, they did look pretty knackered, a remarkable achievement bringing them back Fay. Question, I can't remember - Did you have other anemones in the tank that could have supplied them, through the water, with new zooxanthellae?
  22. May as well "fess up", it was me that said this to Ghostface  This was based on an article I read on the subject some years ago, I've done a web search but not been able to find it. Seems there is not much info available on this at a more advanced level, however here are a couple of somewhat useful links. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showt ... did=772446 http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2006/1/aafeature1 I saw Ghostfaces anemone last night, following a temperature problem Ghostface had the anemone is now a rather sad sight, completely bleached, and shrivelled. As far as attempting to introduce some new zooxanthellae for it, the way I see it is even if it doesn't work, what's to lose? As there are many different types of zooxanthellae, the best plan would be if another owner of an LTA could volunteer a tentacle to supply a new source of zoos, but if this doesn't happen I will give one from my BTA, however as it is a different species perhaps using different zoos, this would be second choice after a LTA. No offense Jetski , I'll have to give you that the idea does sound like crap  , perhaps it is, this does not yet seem to have been fully researched in an aquarium situation. None the less, the anemone does look to me like it will definately be lost if nothing is done, so I'm hoping this can be given a shot .
