    fish loss

Last twelve months, all good, 11 more have gone in and two have come out. Lost 1 sailfin tang and 1 wrasse (jumper). Since I first started keeping marines is a different story, lets just say my tanks don't have 50+ fish in them. Lost at least nine fish to jumping (note to self, have good lids or hood) including two puffers at the same time (they used to chase each other all the time), 4 wrasses, another puffer and 2 tangs. I even had a clown jump out and land in my hands. Lost another tang when a powerheads suction cups let go and it landed on it.
  2. For the sake of the fish get a bigger tank. A small water volume (34 litres) and limited knowledge is a disaster waiting to happen. As Steve said read.
  3. Is it just me, or is there a lot more marine tanks up for sale than usual? Seems to be a new one on the market every week.
  4. From what I understand you need infusoria which is basically like the freshwater one but uses saltwater - big algae culture. This is then used to feed the rotifers which are then fed to the brineshrimp. You need multipule cultures of both as algae and rotifer cultures are prone to crashing.
  5. There is the number one use for them. A great food source for Tangs.
  6. Is it worth the risk?
  7. I would get rid of the pleco. Use the 3ft for the marines. You can live without a skimmer but will need more water changes and will have a harder time conrtolling nutrient levels. Doesn't mean it won't work.
  8. Don't do it, save your marrige! Nah, I bet he will get the bug. First, how big is the tank you are planning on using? I take it you will not be using a sump since you are interested in the wet/dry. Eheim Pro Wet/Dry external filter: Eheim 2227 $499.95 Eheim 2229 $699.95 If you really want to go for a Eheim wet/dry I have a used one I could do for $200 plus parts and shipping. It has a broken float and may need one or two other bits. Was on my 4x2x2. Good filter. I like the way they surge. Don't surge to well when the float is broken.
  9. Use two or more feeding points. I think it would be pretty hard to overfeed nori. Still looks like nori when they poo it out. Maybe the PBT likes it better that way. If you have the space for a seperate tank (like a refuge) it would be well worth growing algae covered rock. Just about all fish like picking over rocks. I am planning on having one tank with grid racking so the rocks are not sitting on the bottom. That way more sponges etc can grow underneath the rocks and algae can cover the top.
  10. Yes. I have to add 2.5kg of mag chloride to one tank to get the Mg back were it should be.
  11. Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. I would just buy a bigger tank and put a divider in or buy two filters.
  12. Since you are starting off I would buy dry rock and cure it in tank. It would cost a lot of $$$ to set most of the tank up with cured rock. I can do a sack (25kg approx) for $170.00. That will be plenty of rock. Once you have cured the rock you can get a couple of good pieces to seed the tank. The rock will take care of the biological filtration. I would use the canister to run carbon and phosphate absorbers down the track. You could add a surface skimmer to make the canister more effective. The Seio 820 pumps do not have a good rep. If you get a good one (a lot of the small ones stop all the time) then they are very effective. If you get the 820 and it stops all the time take it back. The 104F will do a great job but I would probably go for two smaller pumps to improve the flow around more of the tanks.
  13. Can anyone give me a positive ID of these corals please. Hydnophora rigida? Acropora?
  14. Or another option, and my personal fav, a plastic card. Any ATM style plastic card will do.
  15. I would not put a Seio on a wavemaker. The Aquaclears are a great powerhead.
  16. I am getting 25kg of it Wednesday, 25 of Mag chloride and 25 of Mag sulfate so will have plenty to spare if anyone wants some.

    white spot

I would have to disagree with that. Fish that stress easily are the worst fish to add last. If they are the last in, they will have the hardest time establishing themselves in the pecking order. Stress reduction is the name of the game. Many people who have Blue Tangs find that if put under stress the fish will get white spot. I think the biggest problem is that the process of moving from the ocean - overseas wholesaler - NZimporter - retailer - home. VERY stressful for the fish. Countless numbers die along the way. Fish would be heavily medicated along this supply line. When does the medication stop? Either in the retailers tank or your tank. It would be near impossible to have a tank that was 100% whitespot free unless you medicate the hell out of it and never put any form of new live stock in. That includes rocks, corals and even natural salt water. Only takes one. Who many of us go through stressful situations and it is only when all the stress comes of that we get sick?
  18. Yeah, were can I get 5ft T5's from? Just happen to have Icecap ballasts that came with that tank.
  19. They are all on a diet in that tank. All the fish are fat (not phat). There is a lot of algae on the rocks so I have reduced feeding to encourage the tangs to eat it. The Angel would eat 90% of the food that goes in.
  20. Bi-colour blenny. I have one that does a great job. On the down side he has a taste for polyps....
  21. Oh yeah.... 1 Little Giant, 3 Iwaki pumps, 5 Eheim pumps, the gear that came with the tank is awsome. I have just about every pump I will need for my fish room.

    Eden 228

Sure have. Got some secondhand ones to get rid off. Replaced with a Seio. Absolute crap on any sort of undergravel. These need to be run with a sponge as if the internals get dirty they stop rotating. I found the large size tended to derail if run at full speed. The smaller models were fine. They need cleaning a bit more regularly than other pumps to keep them rotating properly. They would be fantastic in a smaller tank. Probably not worth it in a larger setup.
  23. This is the bad boy I got with the big tank I brought off TradeMe. Very friendly fish. Scientific name Holacanthus passer Common name KING ANGELFISH Size 14 inches (only about 20cm at the moment) Distribution Gulf of California to Peru and the Galapagos
