  1. Moved the contents of one tank into the new sump tank and finally tracked this big fella down. Must owe me about $500 in livestock!!! Very partial to polys, mushrooms, leather corals, finger corals and I suspect one chromis. I think if I had left it much longer it would have killed my anemone. About a month ago the anemone started moving and would not stop. Lost a massive amount of size and had a hole in its side. Lucky it healed.
  2. The Passer Angel I have is fine with most corals you just have to be selective. Glueing is all good unless you want to change something then it becomes a major, especially if you need to move the tank!
  3. This is my first sump tank. Measures 118 x 60 x 80cm. 12mm glass. It will hold around 500 litres when full. Sump tank in position. There was less than 1cm clearance but it went in a lot easier than expected. There are two holes drilled in the overflow to take 50mm male Hansen bulkhead fittings and a hole drilled at the bottom right side to take a 32mm fitting. I have put all the wiring conduit in at that end of the fish room so I should not need to do anymore drilling. The plan is to move the contents of one of my other tanks into it on Saturday.
  4. Went into a big fish shop in Melbourne a few years ago and there were signs everywere warning that the use of cameras and recording devices was banned in the store.
  5. Hmmmm, think of the nice rock wall you could build in that. Why do people get tanks that are so narrow....

    Bulkheads

Just out of interest, why is that style a better choice?
  7. If you only need one or two heaters, I would buy a Jager. A world better as far as quality goes - 3 year guarantee, toughened glass, you can calibrate the temperature dial, electronic thermostate - quality. All the cheap heaters are cheap for a reason. It is normal for them to need a 2 degree shift in temperature to turn on and off.
  8. You just answered your own question. If it fits then you can do it.
  9. Cut it up. I think you will find that it will regain it shape very quickly. I have two massive finger corals that need to be hacked up as well.
  10. We are having other house renovations done and the builders informed me last week that a large steel beam was going right above where one of my tanks in the basement is. It was a great motivator for working on my fishroom. The first tank has been ordered, and touch wood, it should arrive Thursday and hopefully I will move the contents of the other tank this weekend or next week. Gib Aqualine up after packing the walls with polysterene.
  11. Would be interesting to see how it compares to the JBL Calcium and Magnesium test kit. You get both tests for a cheaper price.
  12. Oh yeah. I can't get a reading with my salifert pH test kit. It just doesn't match any of the colours on the chart. I can't get matching readings with my Salifert kH and my Seachem alk test kit. I prefer the Seachem as it has a reference test for alk and pH.
  13. Sure is. I think you should remove Blasto for its own safetly. I am more than happy to look after it. Nuke the aptasia now!!! Best to keep on top off them. Seems like just about every coral you get has one or two riding along.
  14. Who sells it? How much does it cost? Do they have a website?
  15. Any pet store can order you some in from Biosuppliers. The come in a pot of dirt.
  16. The big guy likes to be cleaned. If if put the glass scrapper in the tank he moves up to it and starts shaking. When I start scratching his side (he likes the rough plastic side), he rolls onto his side and really seems to relax as he drifts toward the bottom of the tank.

    log book

Yeah, I am a piece of paper guy as well. Most of the now lost. Download the Reefcon 2000 - looks good. Have started logging my stuff. The white board in the fishroom sounds like a great idea as well.
  18. Is it sitting on the rock like my one? If it is, odds on it is a Heteractis magnifica. If it is, then it will need a truckload more light combined with tons of flow. There habitat is reef slopes on prominent solid structures - your classic finding nemo anemone. They like to climb high for the light and current. Distinguishing characteristics - tentacles of uniform thickness and do not taper at the tip - sometimes tips are slightly swollen.Contrasting column colour is destinctive (red, purple, pink with brown, green, blue or purple tentacles). Mine had a very purple base and brown tentacles when I got it. When disturbed the anemone "balls up" showing just the colourful column with a few protruding tentacles at the top. - The Reef Aquarium Vol2.
  19. Making a little progress. I have laid the concrete pad for the first tank and I am starting to pack the walls with polystyrene. The first tank will be ordered in the next week or two. The room still needs 1/2 of one wall to be completed to weather proof it and the doors.
  20. Hey Nic, do you know what type of anemone it is? How long have you had it? I have this one: I have had it for about two years. Heteractis magnifica. Probably one of the hardest anemones to keep. Was the size of a dinner plate when I brought it. Had shrunk to the about 10cm across. Since I moved it into its current tank it has doubled in in size. Heaps of light, great water quality, heaps of flow.
  21. Power off from 8.30 till 1.30pm. One tanks anti- syphon did not shut off properly. Lost about 100 litres onto the garage floor. Took 100 litres out off my other tank (that does not have a sump) and topped it up. One pump failed to start (Seio, what a suprise).
  22. Nope. Tank one used to have VERY high phosphate and nitrate and had zero algae. 3 very efficient tangs. I have to clean the glass every three days but the rocks are very clean. The other tank is not quite as good but the Tangs are on a diet so should lift thier game. I added a lawn mower blenny who had run out of algae in another tank (to efficient for its own good) and it is already having an impact.
  23. Did some tests today Tank One: MG 1710 JBL Test Kit CA360 JBL Test Kit pH 8.6 Salifert pH 8.2 Seachem KH 8.45 Salifert Alk 3.03 Salifert Alk 2.5 Seachem Salinity 1.030 Tank Two MG 1900 JBL CA 360 JBL pH 8.23 Electronic pH 8.6 Salifert pH 8.3 Seachem KH 14.4 Salifert Alk 5.14 Salifert Alk 4.5 Seachem Salinity 1.025 Did reference tests for the Seachem pH and Alk and they are correct. Did a pH test with the Salifert on RO water and it read 7.4. Did all the MG tests twice and still got the same readings. I have been adding a fair bit of magnesium chloride but it should not have gone this high. Calcium levels seem to be dropping as the MG level increases. On the bright side my Heteactis magnifica anemone has doubled in size in the last month!
