  1. My cories often try to dig into the gravel, however my gravel is made up of small stones so not that easy to dig into it as it is in fine sand like in your tank. They do however manage to push at least part of their bodies down in the gravel... especially when food particles fall through the cracks!

    Tank update

Ikola is a pretty cool looking african cichlid, not sure it's available in NZ though.
  4. Looks nice! I like the smooth stones, will be very interesting to see it with the plants in there as well.

    Hi from Taupo

Welcome to the forum Charlie, it's a great community here with lots of knowledge to go around!
  6. When I dose I normally do a 25% water change and then dose, then next day do another 25% water change then dose and so on. So water change first, then dose, rinse and repeat. I normally do 3 days of that, then 1 day 25-30% water change without dosing.
  7. The best thing to do is to separate the discus into a quarantine tank and treat fully over there, as far as I know. However not everyone has multiple tanks, so that might not be an option. I would always be cautious treating the full main tank as I've read that the fish that are not sick will also react to the medication and it might impact their stress levels etc. That might be the reason you've been told to treat using half the recommended dosage.
  8. I think you'll be fine. I've got discus and I do 30% water change weekly direct from the tap with using Seachem Prime in the tank before adding the tap water. The discus are never phased. I haven't tested the pH difference between the tap and the aquarium water, but the aquarium is around 6.7 or so.
  9. Nice tanks! Welcome to the forums.
  10. I've got some fish that I'm wanting to sell to open some space for some new stock to come in. For sale are: 2 chinese algae eaters, around 8 months old, $15 for both 5 zebra danios (4 of which longfin), also 8 months old, $15 for the lot 6 bronze corys, various ages/sizes but I've had them for 7 months, $20 for the lot Can't ship sorry so you're going to have to come to pick up and bring own container.
  11. Welcome! Sounds exciting. Good luck with the discus tank
  12. I believe it will. The general rule I've seen floating around is 50L of water per 1 discus, so 4 discus should be ok in 265L tank. I personally have 2 and planning to add another one in an AquaOne 980 which is 215L. They say discus like tall tanks with lots of water over their heads, but they seem to be happy in the tank and they look absolutely gorgeous. Good luck!

    Hey, new here

Welcome to the forum, the only thing to note about the electric yellows is that they are african cichlids so if you go that route you'll need to keep them in a community of african cichlids. I don't know much about these, but from what I've heard they like acidic water parameters. There's lots of people on this forum that keep african cichlids so I'm sure they can help you out.

    new here

Welcome! This is an awesome community and I hope you enjoy your time here.
  16. Welcome back to the hobby, that's so exciting that you both have an interest and are enjoying it so much. I'm yet to get my wife to be interested in our fish tank, any tips on how to do this?
  17. Welcome to the forum and good luck with the puffer project, sounds exciting!

    Hello

Welcome and good luck with the new tank! Sounds exciting.
  19. The other option is, if someone can come in to check on the tank have them put some fish food every time the pop round, that should decompose and create ammonia which will keep your bacteria going. I never added pure ammonia, just fish food and had hardy zebra danios early on
  20. Welcome to the forum. This is a great place to learn and share experiences about fish keeping! Don't hesitate to ask questions, and I think (I read this morning) the Kapi Mana club has a meeting this week in Tawa so not quite your way but still close-ish.

    Fill my tank

7 different discus, 15 rumynose tetras, 8 different types of cories, 2 German blue rams. This would be my dream aquarium stock.
  22. Congrats! Don't forget to post some photos of the tank!
  23. Best way to get rid of green spots forming on your glass is to wipe it down with a sponge when you do your water changes. This will ensure that it's cleaned every once in a while when you do your regular maintenance and it only takes 1-2mins. I've got the same tank as you and I have two Chinese algae eaters but can't expect them to keep on top of algae forming on the front, side and back of the glass, so I keep this clean myself :-) The best recommendation I can give you is to only get the fish you like in your tank and not get fish just because you think they might help you get rid of a problem you might be able to fix in another way. Except of course if you like ottos then definitely get some!
