  1. I am hoping to run a basic Co2 set up on my 250 litre to promote plant growth. I am however in a state of confusion about where to get the gear I need (in nz or over seas) and what to get (eg natural diy methods or kit set ups with co2 canisters...which I can't find a big enough version of for my tank in nz). Any advice would be appreciated as this is new territory for me. A list of what to get and where from would also be brilliant. Also is excel flourish enough on its own without adding a Co2 system? Thank you!
  2. Okay thank you for the advice. I will look at doing more regular and smaller water changes for this tank when it is set up and if things are still going well I will ease up and do a larger water change weekly keeping an eye on the ph throughout. I just want to get this right first time without much collateral damage if possible - Discus are quite the investment!
  3. Thanks, in that case do I need to do anything about it for future discus keeping? My main concern is that the water change might be harmful because of the large ph difference?
  4. I have been testing my water today with the intention of figuring out the ph difference between my tank water and the tap water My tank is a stable and constant 6.6 Tap water is 7.0-7.2 (depending on the day. I think rainfall has an impact on this). Other levels are: Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 Nitrate: 5 I would like to know what the cause of this difference in ph might be? I have plenty of plants (no Co2) and driftwood in my tank. My current stock are seemingly unaffected by the difference when I do a water change which is a good 20-30% weekly. My concern is that I am planning to keep discus and I am aware of the extra sensitivity to water parameters... Any thoughts on this? Is it common or an issue? Thanks!!!
  5. Oh that's not good. I was thinking of putting the rainbow shark in with my current set up not the discus one (sorry I didn't make that very clear). Would I have the same issues with my other cichlids?
  6. Hi Everyone! Thought I would introduce myself. I have been keeping fw aquariums for 1 year. It all started when my partner bought home a 50L... this is stocked with a couple of cardinals, headlights and a baby golden bristle nose currently. Fast forward a couple of months and I brought home a 980t which is now stocked with a blood parrot, angel fish, firemouths, upside-down catfish and hoping to add a rainbow shark. I also have an empty 3ft 245L aquarium waiting for a discus project which I am going to start once decorating and carpeting on the house is complete. Very excited about this!
  7. Thanks for the advice, I had seen quite a few sites state that you need a group of 5 or there will be aggression issues with but good to hear that your 2 are doing well gilgor. Thanks Adrienne I am hoping to add a rainbow shark to the mix as well when I see a nice larger one available.
  8. I am hoping to start a discus tank. I currently have a aquaone 980t (265 litres) stocked with 1x angel fish, 1x blood parrot and 2x firemouths (both male I think) running on the overhead filter and has been modified for a canister filter as well - a aqua one aquis 750 . I have recently purchased a aquamanta 120 aquarium which is 245 litres and plan to get a eheim filter for it. I'm hoping to shift my current stock into that and use the 980t for the discus. I have done a fair bit of reading and I am thinking 4x discus, 10x cardinal tetra and 6x corydoras (haven't chosen specific type yet) can someone tell me if this will be a large enough tank to keep them happy in long term?
