Hi I have a question regarding keeping turtles outdoors full time. I am aware that if that is to be done that from this point on till December would be a good time to put them out to acclimatize. But I need to know does anyone keep reeves turtles outside all year round? Also, what about Australian Painted turtles. I live in Wellington and am about to have a pond made, where I thought I could let all of them live outdoors. Of course I am planning on have divisions between all of them as I know that they can fight. My Reeves are 9 years old, and my Painted turtle is 1 year and 9 months old. I am also going to put my 13 year old Red ear turtle out there too. Hope to hear from someone soon, as I am unsure if the reeves and Australian Painted turtle could survive okay in a pond full time. Hi I have a 700 litre tank (180cms long) and it has been up and running well for a year now. I have approx 56 cichlids and two very small bristlenose plecos in it. Am interested in getting some more cichlids. My cichlids at present are 23 electric yellows some peacocks and 20 blue dolphins. Filteration is newly put in FX6 and a large sump with a large pothos growing out of it (that has been the filteration for the tank the whole time. All the water readings from my tank are perfect. I'd like to know if it would be okay to get some more fish for this tank or would that be overstocking? I was thinking of getting around 6 more of different cichlids. Thanks

Hi everyone I have a 700 litre cichlid tank that has been running for a couple of years with a Sump for filteration, which has been fine. But I am now wanting to also add a fx6 to the tank for extra filtration. The only thing is I am not sure what media to put into it. Can anyone please suggest what media would be a good idea to put into the fx6. Thanks

Hi I have just seen a youtube clip showing the use of Superglue to attach Java fern onto a piece of driftwood. The person that did the clip said that any glue that is a cyanoacrylate based adhesive is aquarium safe. Has anyone out there used Superglue or any cyanoacrylate based adhesive to attach plants onto driftwood or rocks to put into their aquariums?

Hi there, I do not have a planted tank but have a few plants that are of adequate size ie. Java Fern, Anubias, 2 swords and ambuila (not sure how to spell this sorry). I have noticed that my java Fern was getting darker and did not grow much some leaves looked frizzled and burnt and when I touched them they easily fell apart. I have been adding Flourish Excel for a couple of years as I had a really bad problem with Black algae that looked like hair. That was solved with using the Excel Flourish, but for around a year I have been a bit slack with adding it and started to dose every second day. For the past few months I have skipped some days. I recently found out that it is recommended that the Flourish Plant fertilizer is also used together with the Flourish Excel. So my questions are: Do I need to put some fertilizer tabs in the substrate under my Swords to get them better? or should I just use the Flourish Excel and Flourish Fertilizer solution together instead. If I do use both what is the dosage of the Fertilizer while also using the Excel? Or do I cut back on the Excel or still maintain the same daily and weekly doses. I do 60% water change weekly and then add 50 mls of the Excel and the daily dose is 10mls. I wonder if I should setup Co2 as well, and was looking at a Nutrifin natural Co2 system but I am not sure. By the way both of the tanks I am referring to in this post are a 450 and 420 litre tanks. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi all, I have had advice from a vet that I should be hibernating my Hermanns. He has hibernated previously with the guy that breed him but that was in a warmer climate in nz.. I would prefer to hibernate him naturally outdoors if possible especially as that how he hibernated last year. The vet suggested a box and placing him in a cold part of the house, but we don't have a cold part in the house. Anyone out there hibernated a tortoise in Wellington? If so, how long for did you stop feeding him? and when I get the impression that people have already started the process in April. I am concerned that outside he'd wake up early especially with the warmer days we occasionally get in Wellington.

thank you, I was going to set up a hospital tank, but after speaking with Amy from the Hutt pet centre, she agreed with my view that my 18 litre tank would stress the fish out. I am wondering about a salt bath? I read instructions on doing it on a medium sized fish but not a large one, as he is a good sized fish. He is the only one that seems to have the .itch problem. Should I still do the water changes even though I have dosed the tank with the wunder stuff? Thanks for all your advice.

Hi everyone I really need advice as I doubt what I have been told to do could be right. I have several discus, various roaches, gold nugget pleco and various tetras. I noticed that one of my discus has what definitely appears to be itch. I bought some Wunder white spot treatment and was told to dose the tank 1/2 the mount recommended not to upset my fish. Was told that it would take longer than usual for it to go but it would go. I am concerned it is not enough. I have increased the temp a to around 30 degrees and did put together 12 tablespoons of tonic salt in water and poured some into the tank. I decided not to put it all in as I was concerned about how my gold nugget would react. Am I doing the right thing here. The itch is quite obvious on my discus. Thanks for any help offered.

Hi Everyone I am having an indoor Reptile enclosure made, it's going to be made of untreated pine, but the person making it wants to put polyurethane on the inside and outside to keep it in good shape from any water spillage or moisture. I am trying to find out what alternative could be used, that is non toxic and petsafe. Have done plenty of research but only find items that are used in the Uk and when I google them to see if they are in NZ, they don't appear to be in NZ. So I need to have some suggestions what could be used instead of polyurethane. Remembering that a heat lamp will also be on in the enclosure plus a UV light. Please let me know asap, as the Maker of the enclosure wants to do the sealing tomorrow. Thanks in advance.

Hi I am intending to put a mixture of topsoil and Playsand. It is going to be placed on grass, so thought it would be a good idea to place concrete on top of the grass then place the above on top..
