  7. What vegetables can be fed to fish - especially bristlenoses, apart from zuchhini, cucumber and peas? Do they eat pumpkin? celery? any other suggestions? Cheers Jude
  8. Ages ago I decided to empty the tank on the deck. I pulled out all the plants, caught all the fish, then dumped the plants back in. I turned the heater off, the filter stopped working, the tank got filthier and filthier. Two weeks ago I pulled out all the overgrown plants again, emptied the tank, filled it with cold chlorinated water, replanted and ignored it again. Last night I was given some WCMM's (thanks Minchton) so today I cleaned the tank again, refilled it, fixed the filter and took the unused heater out. Tonight I found a tiny little pepper cory baby in there! Beats me how the poor wee thing survived - or how many I probably murdered    Cheers Jude
  9. Has it got rid of the diesel smell? Seriously, what an awful thing to happen - hope it dries out real soon. I live in dread of doing the same thing myself Cheers Jude

Hi and welcome. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do. We usually get together in the chat room at about 9pm each night and sometimes we even stop being silly long enough to talk about fish Cheers Jude

  14. Hiya I would like some bettas in my tank, I just love the colours. But I know nothing about keeping them. Can you have males and females together? Can you have more than one male? I suspect this answer will be No. Can you have more than one female? What happens when they are breeding - do they get aggressive to each other? What else should I know? lol Cheers Judy
  15. Hi Vicky Is Travis coming to the dinner too? I need to confirm numbers this week Cheers Judy

    Flushing fish

 I can't say I am overly concerned, just interested in whether what I thought I knew was right or not ........... if that makes sense. There's a lot of other things I think that probably aren't right either but I don't intend to share them !!!!!!!!!!    Cheers Jude (who intends to keep some secrets)

    Flushing fish

Can someone help me here please. Every so often I see people mention flushing sick fish. I am sure that years ago I read that you shouldn't do that because it could spread diseases through our waterways. I think it also said that on the odd occasion the fish might survive and multiply - though how a single, sick fish could manage that puzzles me ........... Is my information correct or am I well out of date? - No smart replies about use-by dates please!!!!      Cheers Jude

    Hi all

Hi and welcome Another Wellingtonian for the group ........... I've never had a problem with any fish bought locally so perhaps it is stress or something in your case. Cheers Jude
  20. I haven't had any problems with it putting dust in the house, perhaps it depends on what the insulation is, or how old the house is. I agree it doesn't cool the house in summer but the heater in the system avoids the cold in winter. I just have the timer set for half hour on, half hour off overnight - so its only on for about 4 hrs a day. Still wouldn't be without it Cheers Jude (who is going to be accused of being off-topic if she doesn't shut-up)
  21. You need lots of tanks for pink fish too because sometimes they fight and have to be separated Welcome Claire Cheers Jude
  22. Hi Pies Yes, I consider the DVS to be one of the best investments I've ever made. It would be the first thing I'd put in any other house I moved into. This house used to have huge dampness problems in winter and I've had no mould, no dripping windowsills etc. for 5 yrs or more. And you don't have to keep emptying them like dehumidifiers Cheers Jude

    plec query

I wonder if my mother kept me in a small tank!!!!!!!!!!   Jude
  24. If you start to have a serious problem with condensation I'd recommend the DVS system. Wainui is built on a bog and we used to have dreadful problems - the water would be running off the sills every morning. I haven't had a steamed up window since we put in the DVS 5 years ago. We put a heater in the system to avoid any cold draughts from it. Cheers Judy (who isn't a DVS sales rep    )
