  1. I just posted in the Off Topic forum about Caryl and Grant coming across by ferry this morning. I hope it isn't too rough. Cheers Jude
  2. It never occurred to me that the water might be toxic. I just switched it back on. All the fish look OK so maybe I was lucky - or maybe the other filter is doing a good job Cheers Jude
  3. Hiya I run two fluval external cannister filters on my tank. Filter one was due to be cleaned in the next few days. Filter two was off for 8-9 hours last night after lightning caused a brief blackout - it is plugged into an RCD plug and I had to reset it this morning when I realised what had happened. Filter one stayed operating as it is plugged in to a different plug Will this have killed the good bacteria? I am wondering if I should put off cleaning the other one for a while. And if I should wait, how long for? Cheers Jude
  4. A tank can be either a hospital or a quarantine tank I guess - but not at the same time. I don't know if there is any specific way to set them up. I have a small tank which I intend to use and I will just add some gravel, a heater and cycle it. I would probably keep a couple of fish in it to keep it cycled. I think the preference for a hospital tank is that it has no gravel so that it can be kept very clean but there will be others here that know more than me about it Cheers Jude
  5. It won't hurt the goldfish. It is basically just vegetarian fishfood, with perhaps some wood fibre in it ............ I think. Its fish food - a goldfish is a fish - therefore it won't hurt him.   Cheers Jude
  6. I don't think its a definite. I think not getting diseases is partly a matter of good water management etc. and partly a matter of luck. Even those with the best kept tanks can sometimes have an outbreak of something. Experienced fishkeepers (which I am not yet) recommend having a quarantine tank to reduce the risk of introducing infection with new fish and plants Cheers Jude
  7. I use driftwood from rivers and the beach. If it is small enough I boil it to kill any greebies and bugs. Boiling is also supposed to help it get saturated enough to sink and stay sunk. Adding baking soda to the water apparently helps that as well. For larger pieces of driftwood I soaked them in water for a few day. I put in a large slurp of janola to help kill anything bad and soaked it overnight in that. Then I soaked it for about a week in straight water - I changed it a couple of times to get rid of any trace of janola. And I gave one mucky one a good scrub to clean it up Fish are all fine and the bristlenoses happily chomp on the wood Cheers Jude

    Condolences

I am very sorry to hear the news Alan. Please pass on my best wishes to all the family. Cheers Jude
  11. I think tannins would affect the water all the time. I think I agree with Shae about the filters though, it could be stirring the water up. Although that still doesn't explain why it is clear in the morning does it. I have the water going out of the tank close to the gravel and the water that is returning to the tank at the top. Cheers Jude
  12. I am feeling more generous. Put me down for a whole $20      I wonder how many square inches that would buy me Jude
  13. They are nice to have and help a bit if you have an algae problem but they are not compulsory. Hope the operation all goes ok cheers Jude
  14. I have snails in every tank except the one with a queen loach and a yoyo loach. I transfer stuff back and forth between tanks but this one stays snail free. The loaches can be a bit tough on grassy plants as they unearth them from time to time but otherwise are a nice fish to have I also use my poor yoyo loach as a measure of water conditions - the minute he starts looking a bit pale or listless I do a water change. Don't tell anyone else that will you - I'll get charged with cruelty to fish.   Cheers Jude

    ID please?

Thanks Phillz, I've got some of those fish and I've searched and searched to find out what they are. And I haven't been able to get a photo of them because they won't stay still. Cheers Jude
  16. I just use the hose. I worked out that 1" of water in my tank is almost 40 litres and I use that to calculate how much chlorine remover to use. I squirt the remover in first then use the hose. The fish love it, they keep swimming through the cold water. Don't blame me - Wok told me to  I am not sure I will be able to do it in winter though - unless I do small changes more often. And if I do that I might just as well use a bucket and warm the water!!! Cheers Jude
  17. I would join and support the club but I am not into breeding livebearers at the moment so I'm not sure if there is any point or not. If it would help, let me know Cheers Jude
