  1. Damned shame. It could have ended up a good Breeding Pair; now you have a Pair in one. Like some of our MP's and Beercrates;.................. You would never breed with it.
  2. Hi All There certainly is confusion over the "BLUE FACED" Dwarfs. I have only just got back from Christchurch and put my purchases in a Tank (Brown Discus, I loathe the new colour strains) and got on here. The word amongst the Dealers is that the market IS FLOODED with "Apistogramma inconspicua" thanks to Highway Fisheries wanting to get rid of them, and calling them BLUE FACED Aggassizi. The shops are buying them wholesale for about $4.75 + GST and they are being retailed for $15.00 to $17.50 each. True Aggassizi retail for about $40.00, and they dont look anything like inconspicua.
  3. Hi All, I am always ready to be corrected when I am wrong, and also I like to think a "Thankyou" is in order when I am right. FACTS; I have been an avid "DWARF CICHLID" Fan for many years and followed the discovery of new species with some eagerness. The names that I find the Local Fish shops are giving these new Apisto's is a complete and utter shambles to say the least. There appear to be that many "BLUE FACE" apisto's available that the only way you can be sure (MAYBE) of the true species is to get the Importation Documents.. I have seen Blue Faced Borelli; Blue Faced Aggassizi; Blue Faced McMasteri. I brought a "PAIR" of so called "Blue Faced A. aggassizi" in Nelson, and I bought a "PAIR" of "Blue Faced A. borelli in Christchurch. When I put then into a "BEAKER" to have a close look at them, YOU GUESSED IT, they are all the same. On further investigation I have now found that they are in fact Apistogramma inconspicua. So dont be misled and hand over good dollars for the same fish with a different name in different shops
  4. Hi Penejane If the female can see the male/s then maybe she should be bred with. In all my years with Betta's I keep the females all together in a tank away from the boys. The females cant see the boys from their tank. I assume that you have the tanks side by side. If that is the case I'd try sliding a piece of BLACK CARDBOARD between the tanks. Or, if you have the space....Join in and breed them.. Everybody is breeding Betta's at present so the shops are going to be giving them away when you buy anything else off them.
  5. What you have heard is correct, with Betta's anyway. The female does not need to breed and will just absorb the eggs back into her body. I have never seen the eggs being shed by an unpaired Betta. The same does not apply to a lot of the common community tank fishes. Pencil fish for example become eggbound and cant breed. Good Luck and Keep breeding fighters...... THE COUNTRY NEEDS PLENTY
  6. Did JINX3D ever do the conversion on his TV cabinet?
  7. If they aint males, who performed the sex change? They are ALL MALES
  8. Hey Guys, All I do is take the parents out, scoop up the fry and put in a 16 x 8 x 8 inch tank and put the upset parents back into their tank ready to breed again in ten to twelve days. The fry are all of 4 to 5 mm long and my Dwarf Ciccys love em.
  9. yep, and start the problem all over again.
  10. Hi PJ, The fry should be swimming freely about now and getting fat bellies with the "Green Water"
  11. Hi All Why are you all complaining about???????????????????? You got your own LIVE FOOD FACTORY RIGHT AMONGST THE REST OF YOUR SETUP. I let my Blue Gouramis breed for the same reason. "CHEAP FISH FOOD" Nobody wants them, it's not worth rearing them to maturity as it costs too much, and they take up tank space. But since they are in their own tank and wanna breed...I let them. So needless to say, all my betta and better fish dine on Blue Gourami Fry.
  12. Good luck. Go for it, and read some of the posts regarding Betta's that are on the site. I can see the price of Betta's dropping to where they should be with all that are being bred at present. It seems to me to be the fashionable fish to breed at the moment. I would LOVE TO GET my stcky little paws on some "GOOD" butterfly of Cambodian fighters; also an EMERALD GREEN Pair..... But, Hope springs eternal.
  13. Hi PJ The question of "How green should the water be?" How long is a piece of string? I use "Green Water" when you cant see through the jar. Remember it is only Algae and micro organisms so it will be natural with no bugs or bacteria. Just leave your container in the sun for a few days before you use it. Again, Good Luck.
  14. Hi All An old rule of thumb when stocking a tank was; One inch (25mm) of fish body length, to the Caudal Peduncle (not including the tail) required eight square inches (200Sq. mm) of surface area. I still stick by those figures when stocking a tank or Selling fish. So an adult Male Krib at four inches (100mm) long requires about 800Sq mm of surface area. Plus I personally dont think that your choice of mix is going to work out too well. Sorry.
  15. Hi PJ water left sitting in a container will go green naturally. The spores of all sorts of algae and microscopic animalcules are in the air all the time and will settle in your containers, believe me. As I mentioned earlier, Glass is the best as it lets light in from every angle and allows the spores to multiply. The greenness of the water is only algae breeding and increasing due to "Photosynthesis" as algae are only microscopic plants and they require light to grow. DONT PANIC................ You're doing OK, just take your time and take POSITIVE STEPS and within 6 months you'll have heaps of saleable Betta's.
  16. HI PJ I'm pleased that things appear to be going ok with the fry, and the male sems to have settled into his instinct routine. I'd preferably leave the male where he is at present so long as he is doing the job of looking after the nest and fry. The male (AS CICHLIDS) has an antiseptic saliva when he is in breeding mode so his "Mouthing" the babies and picking them up in his mouth keeps them "Hygenic" and free of any stray Bacteria. The egg yolk is a mesy business at best and shouldn't be mixed with water to make a paste. A little bit of the yolk is put into a hanky and squeezed into the tank. TRY AND GET THE GREEN WATER GOING, There is more food in that than there is in the egg yolk and it is natural.
  17. Hi All Thanks for the posts. It is good to see that (maybe it's just the stalwarts of NZKA that are posting) there is someone out there that has taken some of their time to make the post. The NZKA is I fear short on numbers but a post every few days should encourage others to get off their butts and take an interest in their fellow members. Thanks for the infromation re; the AGM Alan and the pics of the Napier show Caryl. Good luck.
  18. Hi All. I keep looking for new posts as to what is happening with "Killies" but I dont appear to be able to see anything new on a daily basis. I would like to think that there is enough interest in the species to have a post at least every other day. The forums keep the interest of the enthusiasts up and also the general hobbyists.
  19. Hi Hope this is a better size pic. Even an old dog "CAN LEARN NEW TRICKS"
  20. Hi tanksman Thanks for that. I will try to increase the pix sizes. I already have the camera set to large and best Quality, so I assume it is in my photo host that I will have to alter or edit. Good stuff the "RUM CAKE".  Being ex pussers I can recommend it.
  21. Hi Tanksman, Please explain to a 61year old wrinkly what a "Nano Pic" is. In my trade as an Electronics Engineer "NANO" is an infintesimal particle. If the reference is to the size of the piccy then please enlighten me as to how to enlarge it for putting them in posts.
  22. Hi to All. Your correct Alan. There is "NO RIGHT or WRONG" way of doing things with regards our fishies. We create a situation in which the fish live and have the desire to spawn. Our input starts at the point of the fry hatching. We have to choose the correct foods for them at the right times and make sure it is available to them 24/7 for as long as we have them. That said, the information which has been posted in the forum is of great value to anyone who wishes to avail themselves of that information. In a forum, information is shared "PRO BONO PUBLICA". ( For those lacking Latin ) Free for the good of the people. How people utilise that information is their concern as it is only given in good faith. The information I have posted on Betta's was such, and as it has worked for me for sooooo long I feel (in a way) qualified to impart that knowledge on to those who desire it. Everybody has their own way of doing things as that is what works for them, so they are qualified to offer that knowledge (EXPERIENCE) to those requesting or needing it. I dont like to see "YOUNG HOBBYISTS" put off by loosing a "FIRST SPAWNING" of any species of fish as it is disheartening for them and they tend to say "I cant seem to do it right" and give up. Dont let that happen to our hobbyists, young or old. Give them the benfits of your experiences. Good luck. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
  23. The ones that are going to be females are usually striped on the sides. The females NEVER loose their stripes but as the males increase their size the lines fade away. A slightly rounded dorsal on the females is an added check. Thought I would let you have a look at my last spawning 31-01-06, they hatched 2nd Feb. and are already 19mm. Good luck
  24. Go Paul They are colouring nicely and fat as well. A couple of promising looking females in that lot and it's going to be good finnage on the male. Good luck
  25. Hi all. There seems to be something about leaving lights on or off. FACT: FISH SLEEP AND CANT WITH THE LIGHT ON.............Can you? When the fry are free swimming and they are in the tank by themselves, and you are feeding them "GREEN WATER" YOU CAN LEAVE A "SMALL" LIGHT ON ABOVE THE TANK. I dont. If you choose to use a light then I would suggest one of those El Cheapo night lights from the Ware e whare about $3 - 4 dollars. PJ. Tomorrow night "PUT 250ml OF "GREEN WATER" INTO THE TANK. When the bubbas hatch and start to look for food it is front of them straight away.
