  1. So I have this nano tank that im working on putting together at the moment for a little SPS display... At the moment the tank is in the process of bedding in/cycle, I bought live rock from my LFS for it so its "mid" cycle at the moment ive also added a small amount of blood-worms to introduce some more ammonia to the tank when it starts to break down. My question is, at the moment I want to enhance the cycle, promote growth in the tank... algae, misys etc... If I leave my lighting on 24/7 is this going to be a bad thing? At the moment there is no coral in there so no coral bleach will happen or anything like that.
  2. big fan of your Bangaii's and your SPS look good too well done, im quite jealous
  3. of note, my LFS stocks AHT frozen misis shrimp, these are what I feed in my marine tank so some LFS will sell AHT maybe not all products though

    My 114l Reef

  5. Im going up that way thisafternon, ill stop in and check and report back
  6. im feeding my 001 plec those AHT's... the guy selling them is a friend of mine. He breeds bristle nose off the same pallets and has no issues with them
  7. I got a new peppermint shrimp today... tried to take a photo of him tonight but he has gone into hiding in the meantime, here is clarkii looking happy
  8. get a small fry keeper/net from your LFS
  9. blueether that stuff looks pretty good. Im in the same boat at the moment with my 600l bowlfront... im thinking of painting black
  10. Well I just had power back on last night after 50 hours without power... how i survived with 6 tanks and zero deaths... All thanks insulated with blankets or similar, especially the tops. Almost constant emptying of 10 lires from each tank, heating on the gas stove and syphoning back in... you have to do this a few times on a 600 litre tank to actually make a difference. kept them wrapped up overnight and more water changes in the mornings straight away. I now know someone locally with a spare 2.2kw generator that will run all my tanks with ease though...

    Power outage

Im in Wellington, have no power, have not had power for 49 hours and counting, still no fishtalities yet! Ive been siphoning water out, heating it on the gas stove and putting it back in... finally got hold of a petrol generator a few hours ago so have just hooked that up, only non essential things running off it... so heaters and such but no lighting... ive got 6 tanks all going ok at the moment

JBL fert balls ordered thismorning from LFS, should arrive next week once they arrive ill be getting some java fern and will give that a shot, am considering getting small pots and filling with some nice plant growing substrte to hide under the sand, making them grow better and harder for the fish to dig at
  17. this is a fantastic looking setup, what types of fry are you keeping in there? also how are you maintaining the good bacteria in the water? is your sump drum full of LR? is that sump lit or all dark?

    My workplace tank

Ok thanks, Im going to LFS tomorrow to return a faulty heater so will check for some JBL products I was of the understanding silica sand was good for plant growth? oh well all good... Ill see how the fert goes. I think the tank needs a black background and better lighting too

    My workplace tank

    its a "grow out" tank
  21. ive thought about sumping to add a skimmer and remove heater etc... but really it starts to go against the reasons of having a nano for me. I dont mind a regular weekly water change, I know its going to do good things and I know the reef salt im using is doing well for coral growth. If i were you id stick with the standard setup as much as possible to maintain that nano usage.. tear out the lights and upgrade if you want/need to get better coral growth, but with light stock levels you will be find with that standard HOB filter and good water change schedule i reckon.. this is all my own opinion though! and P.S. all cardanals are awesome, bangaii are extra cool.. there are a few local ones here going cheap too

    My workplace tank

good thinking, i might do that... might get into the landscaping shop over the weekend for some more flat schist or similar
  23. Ive just switched from NSW to ASW, simply because over the winter i cant get out and get a good NSW collection often enough for my tank... not that its big but im wanting to stick to weekly changes every sunday. So Ive bought puredue and some coral salt for my changes... seems to be going well. For lighting, im also on a tight budget so I went DIY with LED lighting, is that much of an option for you? check my fluval edge thread, if you want more detials PM me, i can help if you want to do something more specific with the lights... mine are still in progress there will be more added. Im really digging nano's at the moment!

    My workplace tank

yeah i'd love to add height, any suggestions how i can? i dont want to add a large driftwood trunk as this has a tendency to alter the PH away from where it site now, its quite stable as the tank stands now. what else could I use?
  25. is that a dreaded apitasia in the third photo back corner of the tank? its looking awesome what size water changes are you doing? are you using NSW?
