Double yes... Yeah i got the LED's from CM LED And yes I made a perspex lid for the tank opening that protected the globes from evap
-
Alright so Ive just put the tank back together after taking out my LR to torch the Aiptasia! Ive re-arranged the rock now, what are your thoughts. I also noticed a few of the LED's have died already in my replacement bulbs, Ill email the company I bought them from, I hope this wont be an ongoing issue Rockscape From the top down Mr Turbo Snail This is my lighting issue.. you can see it best in the reflection of the LED's The left and the right, its missing about 6 LED's. 4 from the middle and 2 in the outer ring
-
Cheers, ill get the actual camera out one day and take some nicer pics of them. crappy iPhone doesn't do them any justice at all, not enough control on shutter speeds for speedy little fish
-
throw a couple old towels in there to mop it up the finish up with a hair drier
-
Yup its out of the tank now
-
Ahhh wise thinking dude! ive got a gas soldering iron with blowtorch attachment that would be spot on as i can contain the burn area nicely... thanks for the suggestion. Ive spotted 3 small ones so ill burn all the little suckers and hope they die off! Picking up another bit of LR on the way home tonight, ill try score a few extra snails or similar
-
Understood, ill keep waiting till cycle looks good. Looks like the LR I picked up has a few small aptasia on it grrrr... so ill have to look into getting rid of that, i see some people use a chemical and inject it into the mouth, others suggest boiling RO water, others suggest either a copperband or peppermint shimp... not sure what way ill go. There were also some snails and a few tiny little invert looking things that skim around on the tank floor that hitched a ride, from what I understand they are all good though. The heat stayed nice and stable at 25 all weekend so im pretty happy with that but ill still be getting a backup heater just incase. Reading more regarding silica sand its really not a good idea so ill be getting some crushed croal sand this week to lay a nice base in the tank

:f77: thankfully it's all fine this morning. I'd already left before i posted the message so couldn't take the heater out overnight. Looks like the reset has done ok though as its bang on 26 thismorning as it normally is. Ive got my spare in with me so ill replace it regardless, will take this one home and throw it in a spare tank for a week to see if its ok or not. cheers all, my fish are happy again Sorry I know its a bad photo but the Demasoni is such a quick little dude
-
Ive got a spare at home, ill take it to work with me tomorrow
-
hmmmm the hard part is this tank is at work so I cant monitor it after I go home. well ill cross fingers and see how things go overnight i guess

I just got to work to do a couple of changes for a customer and feed my Cichlids As I was grabbing a small sample of water to melt the bloodworm iceblock into I noticed the water was warm, sure enough checking my temp and its up around 31deg... my electric yellows and demisoni looks very "washed out" colour wise. I checked the setting on the heater and its only showing 26 as per where I normally have this tank. So 31 is wayyy too high, I hope my fish are alright, should i remove the heater? I did a reset of it by unplugging it and turning the thermostat right down before setting it back to 26.... anything else i should do or check? or should I take it out and replace it? I dont want to cook them!

Posted the last one without knowing people couldn't reply... ooops Hey all I just got this tank as a kickoff to marine keeping while I do the build I spoke about in my other thread. So I managed to score this Fluval Edge tank including heater, lighting and stock HOB filter for sub $100 on trademe. Ive already purchased LED replacement bulbs to get rid of the current halogen's, the LED's are much much better! I still plan to put in a couple of LED strip lights, probably one deep blue and some extra white ones pointing further out to the edges to get more light out there. I collected some NSW and have also bought a bottle of Puredue RO water from countdown, I premixed this to achieve an SG of 1025 then added to the tank. At the moment im using the standard HOB filter with a bit of filter floss shoved in to get the "crud" out, ive also got a small bag of tuzine activated carbon in there. The heater is in and set at 25, not shown in the photo is the small powerhead im using for water-movement, its just a little one im on the look out for something bigger. I went to the LFS today and bought some live rock, thanks to Craig at the LFS for all the help and info I bought 2.3 kg so thats 10% of the tank size in LR but im going to go bag tomorrow and get another chunk as I think it looks a little bare in there. Looks like a large snail on one chunk of rock and a bunch of little ones (around 15) im not sure what else has hitched a ride, will give it some time and see what comes out! No sand yet, im waiting for the crud to settle so I can vacuum it up, im then going to buy some coral sand to lay a good base in the tank. I do have spare silica sand at home but advice from Craig is to not go for silica sand as that may encourage diatoms? Enough talking, photos time! Next steps are to let things settle in this week, get a bit more rock in there then next weekend ill take a water sample, make sure things are on track... If Im showing ammonia or nitrite ill leave it to settle, if im showing nothing ill introduce some ammonia to the tank to kick it off. once all levels settle down and im 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite with a little nitrate then it will be coral time.. or can i add a hardy soft coral while its cycling in? Cheers Sam

Thanks all, he is a bit of a grumpy shit but I still like him
-
Hey there, Wondering if someone can help me id this specific type of Cichlid, im told its a Jack Dempsey but as to what one im not sure, or is he too young to tell?
-
flag that, i read your thread, found the site and ordered them already! Guessing you are no longer running your Edge tank? did you ever upgrade the filter at all? did you strip out the content and add LR into the filter or anything like that? Being the tank is so small i wont need much in the way of water movement, many of the powerheads I see for sale are pretty big, how do i get away with doing it on a smaller scale?
-
Thanks for the link Phantom, ill have a look through, where did you locate your MR11 replacements from? agreed bigger is better, it will happen just not as fast...
-
So it would appear this tank might go on hold for a bit... or atleast take a bit longer and more thought before i jump in... ive got my eyes set on slightly larger tanks I have started buying bits for a larger tank setup, scored some t5 light fittings and a RedSea test kit on trademe In the mean time, to get me started on that salty bug, I bought a fluval edge 23l, ive seen them used as nano marine tanks before so im thinking this will be me to start with! So ill be upgrading the stock halogen's to LED's, i think i can buy replacement 'bulbs" as they are MR11 fitting... any suggestions on a direct replacement for marine? Will i also need few blue LED's for coral colour? As i wont be able to fit a skimmer ill be doing weekly water changes. Should be picking up the tank this week some time and am super keen to get it started on cycle using LR in the meantime, here is a video with the same tank

thanks spoon, im only thinking on insulating the sump tank, this is going to be hidden inside the stand anway
-
being that this will be my first tank with a sump, would insulating the sump with 30mm thick polystyrene or simialr to keep the heat in be a good idea? I was planning on getting the tank drilled today but after putting more thought into it last night I think I need to plan its location a bit better, ill have to think about how/where the overflow box is going to be. Stand building will commence this weekend, ill post photos to keep you all happy
-
Awesome thanks for the feedback so far One thing i forgot to mention was water movement via a power-head of some sort, from what I understand the requirement here is an item with watermovement of approx 20x the tank volume per hour i.e. 40l tank, required power-head throughput of 800l/h is that correct? You are right on all counts regarding heater, its way overkill and it probably wont fit in my sump, ill make use of some of my smaller (~100w) spares. After much looking today i cant seem to find suitable replacement tubes for my lights that will suit marine, i may have to purchase some new t5's or LED's Is there any problem with collected seawater and TDS or does that not apply in this case, i would then use Pure Due for freshwater topups to ensure salinity is constant. Im going to get in contact with Port Nicholson Glass regarding getting my tank drilled for the sump piping and after talking to Craig at LFS ill be building a small overflow box out of acrylic and having this in the corner of the tank for surface skimming down to the sump. I think I will go the route of the skimmer, better to be safe than sorry just relying on water changes, LFS has a Fluval suited to upto 170 litre for around $200 that should fit nicely into the sump. Stand and sump designs will be measured up and drawn this weekend im feeling good about this
-
not sure if this is a valid method or not but I prep all my collected driftwood this way... we have an old bath in the back yard, i throw the wood in there tied to a brick or similar to ensure its fully submerged. Once a week the water is changed till its clear for a week... then a boil if i can fit it in a pot... otherwise in the tank she goes!

lol but pet rats are cute! Agreed though, convicts are prolific breeders, i'd recommend removing either your male or female convict to prevent this. If you can provide detailed photos of both convicts im sure they can be sexed so you can decide what you would like to do. Im guessing the fry are being consumed by other tankmates? I dont think thats too many fish for 90l but keep an eye on your water levels and cycle, i'd hate to see them die.

Hi all, Im new to FNZAS and also to marine, ive been keeping freshwater for some time now but am looking to "jump ship" after becoming near obsessed with looking at reef pic's online and visiting my LFS' Ive done loads of reading online including the marine tutorial that is a sticky in this forum... So, as im a married man with a mortgage and two children money isnt exactly free flowing for me but I have managed to free up some funds to put towards a marine/reef setup. As said earlier I also keep FW, as part of this I have developed MTS (Multiple Tank Syndrome) thus meaning ive got 3 tanks at home and two tanks at work running currently, along with 2-3 smaller ones stashed away in the garage, its these smaller ones im thinking of pulling out and turning into my first little marine nano setup. In my stash ive got one thats around 40l and another around 30l thats a total volume of around 70l, lets say 60l of usable volume... I know this isnt much but i'd like to keep it lightly stocked and more of a coral reef tank than a fish tank My thoughts are to have the 40l as display and the 30l as a sump of sorts concealed in the stand ill build. The 40l has no drain hole so ill either have one drilled (is this possible) or have to use an overflow weir type setup to take the water out and down to the sump. The 30 is a plastic tank, that doesn't really matter as it will be out of sight and will just be the sump. IDEA: The display tank will be rock and probably a small bed of sand for aesthetics after it all settles down, the rock providing a home to coral and inverts to keep the place clean as well as all those good little processing powerplants that come with nice live rock to keep that cycle running... Lighting will either need to be bought or one of my spares put into use... ive got a "masterpet" light that has two tubes, they both need replacing so maybe I could replace them with something suitable for marine keeping? the current tubes are T8 YZ10RR25 10W 220VAC/50Hz Ø25x331mm not sure if I can find something suitable or not The sump will be below the display concealed in the stand ill build to fit it all nicely. Being that the sump is small ill need to plan it quite carefully, its going to contain the return pump (flow rate of 10x tank vol per hr), heater and skimmer as well as the live rock... as much as I can fit as I understand the more the better as far as the sump goes? Water will likely either be fresh/rain water dosed with red sea coral salt (LFS guy tells me its the bizzo) and/or water taken from the sea at high tide. Ill also pickup the required test kits and a refractomiter I have a few brief questions I hope can be answered 1, is using a plastic tank as a sump a bad idea? 2, suggestions on sump configuration? 3, any suggestions regarding using sea water (other than adding fresh to bring the salinity down slightly) 4, is my idea around lighting ok? replace my bung tubes with what to suit? 5, what test's will I need before starting out and can I use some of my current FW ones i.e. "API freshwater master test kit" 6, is a 300w heater overkill for 70l? 7, do i bother lighting the sump? How does that sound to you all much more knowledgeable people than myself? have I overlooked something or forgotten something? Many thanks aer0 (sam)
