  1. i am six foot three with akward lanky arms and i could barley reach the bottom of my 500mm tall tank without stripping and putting my shoulder/head in most salt tanks that i have seen have no glass between the water and the mh unit as the evaporation would cloud up the glass and block the light that you are spending so much money to create auto top off will counter the evaporation and keep the sp reasonably stable
  2. that windy road in my car every month   no thanks
  3. heres a pic i took on sunday with the macro setting
  4. all out of shrink wrap how about the glad variety?
  5. zoom caryl that one was way over my head spooky ill play around with the apature as per your sugestion the macro setting is quite good but the glass gets in the way of getting really close (could always go in from the top oh thats right the water) cant be bothered with a tripod at the moment (maybe in a few months) but the camera does have an auto stabilizer that is quite neat
  6. get bigger fish? haha any way the problems is not when looking at the pics that i have taken but rather with the process of taking the pic it just wont focus over 6X to actually take the pic the apature info is handy though for nice pics thanks
  7. at least you have your priorities right tank>then>decorating
  8. anyone know some tips for zooming into the fish tank my new camera works well ou of the tanks but for pictures over the 6x optical it wont focus well and even using the manual focus it wont clear up help nb its a panasonic lumix 12x optical 4mgapix
  9. its looking good (do something with that wall paper)
  10. well if your not worried about the budget then do what ever you want money talks (nb worry) the glass thickness isnt as much about heat as it is about stopping dead fish flopping around in one inch of water on your carpet after the thin glass cracks under the water pressure your metal halides would give most of the heat needed during the day and the heater would buff that and keep it right at night
  11. too deep try catching a fish in a tank thats a meter deep (just ask steve) the more filtration the better hence the importanse of the skimmer and good rock (the primary biological filtration) calculate the water as though it was empty (ie no rock) finish before you fill if you wanted to travel to auckland there are alot of people that would show you around

the dope growers lights as you said have redder light and the bulbs are very different than those of the aquarium trade (big bulky round things the size of your head) i could get 75w of fluoro but the output would be much less

anyone seen these around in nz?
  14. from what i've seen the only bare bottom ive liked was a fowlr and the bottom looked like it was vacuumed every day but i think i will end up with the rubble bottom coverd in shrooms (it will make it easy to get frags as well for when i get my big tank up and going again)
  15. i totaly agree with iduncan go see as many setups as you can take your time on the setup and get every thing right before adding water

  18. its kind of temporary just moved from a four footer into two seperate tanks (one three foot and this little tank which is kindof experimental) we put down a substrate of white argonite in the three(is that how you spell it?) but i didnt have time to do anything in the little one and i am still thinking of crushing up some live rock into little chunks and having a rubble bed covered in mushrooms
