  7. hehehe, im getting big complicated ideas now ..... the challenge would not be to make it tidal, it would be to recreate the tidal flow as close as I could, the problem would be delivering a very slow feed between each might have to make the flow between part of the filter system....... oh well.... still gotta wait till we move to a more stable house, our current rental is wet and cold so we planning on moving soon. If I do start studying it will be a 3 year course so stability won't be a problem (every1 hates moving tanks)
  8. wouldnt be surprised in tauranga. i am thinking lateralis now, found a couple of good pics online that do look similar. I have a funny feeling I have a pair in my tank, they are making a small depression in the sand and the larger male (?) is displaying to one of the other, driving him away and the smallest one is hanging around him. they all came out of the same puddle, but the third one was about a meter off to the side of the first 2.
  9. what about 2 tidal tanks, where one drains into the other??? be able to see high and low tide at the same time.
  10. I have a budgie that sleep walks  (at 3am) does anyone else have a strange pet at home?
  11. dont think so, lateralis dorsal count 7:10, and slightly different face they all got different personalities showing already.. probably going to add a small rock tower to hide filter intake and a few shrimp to finish stocking....
  12. also useful for dealing with alcohol poisoning in teenagers
  13. lol, yeah need a lot bigger tank... My dad designs electronics for the hydroponic industry, was thinking about a modified flood and drain system, linked to a slow feed pump to simulate a 6hour incoming. going to have to go on my wish list untill i get into a more stable house... sick of renting
  14. yeah, was meaning Zostera marina, so it does need a dry period?? hrmmm... might try macro algae then, LOTS of that in Tauranga harbour =P... got me thinking tho.... fully tidal mudflat tank... with algae filter in sump..... refugium..... now to convince 'she who holds purse' :-? .......
  15. Hi has anyone every tried keeping eelgrass in their tank??.. thought it might be a good nitrate remover in my sand goby tank. any ideas on lighting requirements???
  16. Forsterygion nigripenne <=== nope not a triple fin, only got 2 dorsal fins, 6 and 11 rays and VERY large pectorials... reminds me of a very tiny gurnard almost. think I have 2 males and one female as two of them are always displaying to each other.
  17. hrmmm. how do you get full pic on image shack???, thats a high def image thats 3mb, but i can only view small version
  18. lol, understatement.... seems weird to me that everything i read says that most northern harbours only have Flavonigobius exquisitus, yet there seems to be not much info available on them. and the specimen photo's of F. exquisitus do not really look like mine. they seem more like melanobranchus. plus the specimen drawings of exquisitus only have 9 read dorsal rays, where as mine have 11. makes it more interesting tho, and I will continue on my quest for a good photo, they are settling in already and are getting to be quite agressive feeders. which brings me to another point. is a diet of shrimp pellets, minced clam and bloodworms ok for them, all info puts them as scavengers, and they are kinda vicious on the clam and shrimp (havent tried bloodworms yet) so im assuming this will be ok. any ideas will be helpful (p.s. must be in the VERY low $$$ range.
  19. and if you do get a permit, how do you source the animals???? im keen
  20. whats the stripy thing, bottom right corner in bottom pic???
  21. lets see if this works... this is what comes out of 1.5 L of mudflat sand in Tauranga Harbour =P look closely, can you see it???
  22. well tanks going well, fish are settling in and im planning on moving to stage 2 in 2 weeks if all parameters stay good. how do I post pics??, do I have to find somewhere to upload them to first???
