  1. Me either (ask the guys who got fish from me) but that's not the topic here. The topic is how to make money out of fish and the ideas postet from me cover that - and not if it's ethical or if most people on this site and FNZAS are here for hobby and wouldn't do it... @Sheepsnana: Great! Finally some good looking Guppys in NZ. Need only someone who is up for it, eh? :digH: JaSa
  2. Breed Fancy Guppies and only supply the males. Since there are no females it takes a bit of time and ressources to breed the pure strain back. Even better for Platinum, Lazuli, etc. which are located on the X-chromosom only. Or simply put females from another strain in the mix you are selling and the confusion will be perfect if someone tries to continue the strain and looks at the ugly F1-generation that pop's out JaSa
  3. Hi Fine Oyster Grit in a 5kg bag from RD1 brings my rainwater up to 5gH. But i just mix it in with the sand and have a little bag full hidden behind the filtermat... JaSa
  4. When I go bush I never had to pay anything - even bring venison back home sometimes
  5. Couldn't find any information about the shape of the tank nor the surface areas in this thread so I thought it is a standard tank - and for that's what the calculator is prob. designed for. But looks like hovmoller got some more detailed informations about the 540l tank mentioned by the topic starter But anyway - I always used two heaters in my bigger tanks. Gives you a bit of security in case one goes down and the heat is spread more evenly if you don't have a big water movement. Let us know how you go during winter, will you? Cheers, JaSa
  6. It comes down to simple math: Click Sure you can figure out what it all means - even if it's in German JaSa
  7. If that is right, then some shops seem to look after them really well - and other not so well But that and my other posting is just me after one visit ...
  8. So, just back from Auckland and that is what I think about the shops: Animates Mt Eden: Very, very friendly and helpfull staff! Nice shop, good parking. Over all quality of the fish is average. Spotted a single Magenta Guppy Male in one of their tanks. First one I evers saw in NZ! Left it there coz no space at the moment Rest of the livebearers disappointing in quality, sorry. HFF Mt Roskill: Small but really good shop. Good parking. Lot's of different fish in perfect condition & quality. Tanks set up beautiful with nice gravel. Livebearers were a bit disappointing compared to the rest and would have expected more (selection). Loved the plain tanks for sale in the tank room and will be back for a few of theses 37l (?) ones for $40 AquaVillage: Closed / redecorating at the moment ??? Bought nothing in the end but it was a good day out and I really enjoyed it. Sadly nothing fancy for me as a livebearer-lover but the selection is probably changing every week... JaSa
  9. Pipe must be really long to get you enough volume. 200m of 20mm pipe contains only 60l. 200m of 32mm hold 160l. But long pipes need strong pumps because of friction - and heaps of digging You are better off to get drums or other containers of some sort ... JaSa
  10. Fact is at 1m in the ground the temperature is around 10°C all year round so if you put a large water tank in there we can asume the temperature will be the same after some time (days?, weeks?). You would like to keep the temperature at 18°C in your tank? Lets say your tank is 100l and the room temp. (and water at the start) is 25°C means you would need 47l of 10°C water in one hit to get it to 18°C. From then on you only need to keep it there and stopping it from getting any warmer. Means you only need 12l of your 10°C water to prevent your tank going from 18°C to 19°C. My 60l go from 20°C to 25°C in 12h and then back to 20°C again. How long that is for you depends on your (actuall tank size,) room, lights, ... But adding it all up and be on the save side I would say you need at least two 200l plastic drums joined together and 1m deep in the earth to source enough cold water for a 100l tank. Metal drums would be better for heat exchange but then you have to worry about corrosion and need a heat exchanger and two seperate watersystems. A very little pump hooked up to a thermostat could be used to pump cold water from the drums to your tank and pipe it back out there again for re-cooling if the tank gets to warm. Pretty sure there are some big flaws (water change?) but just playing around in my head Cheers, JaSa
  11. Yeah, the EFPOS would be maxed out within minutes and I will look pretty dum at the counter try to pay for my goodies
  12. Thank you guy's That is really great and I will set up the rout so we are going past a few of the mentioned shops. Hopefully I can trick my other half so she won't figure it out what's going on - or drug her :digH: Cheers, JaSa
  13. Another batch? Wow, thats great :happy1: What is cold water for you? Their origin is in Brazil and Uruguay in tropical and sub-tropical streams. The average temperature in Uruguay is 16.5°C and the average temperature in the south of Brazil is 20°C. On FishBase the temp. is named between 20°C and 24°C, other sites in the net recom. around 20°C. Sure, they will survive much colder temperatures but what is the optimum? And since yours are breeding very well I thought it's a good idea to find out the min. and max. in a 24h periode for your tank JaSa
  14. Hi Saw your fish an TradeMe :slfg: Sold any yet? What size is your tank? Just thinking of giving them their own tank which would be a 60x30x30. And another question: What are your min. and max temperatures during 24h in the tank since you are not using a heater AFAIK? Cheers, JaSa
  15. Hi I will be up in Auckland for two days in a couple of weeks time and while up there trying to visit a few pet shops. Which pet shops are a MUST to check out? Obviously I'm interested in the shops with the best & biggest stock on tropical freshwater fish - especially livebearers ... What are your personal favourites? What's a MUST SEE? Any (big) Guppy breeders up there I might have a chance for a chat / having a nosy? Cheers, JaSa

    Filter mat

It's just an airlifter, yes - but the way the holes are drilled, the washers and the muffle are used, make it better (more waterflow & quiter) then a normal one. Try and compare it and you will be amazed 8) JaSa

    Filter mat

Good point !!! Will check out the shop in Hamilton and set one up + let you guys know. JaSa

    Filter mat

Hi Yeah, basically the water flows very slowly through the filter mat, into the pipe und back into the tank because the air in the pipe takes water with it. If you use the propper TLH it es very quiet and you dont have the problem that feed (artemia), fry or little shrimp (not allowed in NZ, aaah ) get sucked into the filter. Another good point is, that because it is a really slow flowing rate + big area in the mat + heaps of oxigen through the TLH, bacteria have time to do their magic. Had this system in all my tanks back in germany and never had to clean it for month. Don't agree with years but I was breeding fish and therefor had a fair bit of them in the tanks. Do a water change every 14 days and it's all good. Had 60x30x30 tanks and had one side (30x30 area) covered with a mat and one TLH running. Cubes and all the new versions are not that good in my eyes. Too small, to loud, to fast flow, ... If a system reaches a perfect stage, everything you change will make it worse. Same here. Stick to the mat, get your amount of air right for the tank size and all the rest will be perfect @Sophia: Para Rubber you recon? Up here means Auckland, right? Anything in Hailton by chance? Cheers, JaSa

    Filter mat

Hi Does anyone knows where to get these filter mats (cheap) from? CLICK System works really great and I need a few pieces of 30cm x 30cm for a couple of more tanks. Got a sheet from World Of Water in Hamilton the other day but it was very expensive... Cheers, JaSa
  20. Looking great Mine all got eaten but since a few days another lot got dropped and they are doing fine this time. Maybe I take them out and feed them with artemia rather then leave it to mother nature ... Do your males have more black spots then the females? My male also is slightly lighter brown then the females. I wouldn't call it "blond", just a tick lighter... Cheers, JaSa
  21. I would say the pic is photoshopped or loads of astaxanthin/canthaxanthin have been used. The blond/gold ones I've seen so far are not that orange - only the lutinos come close but they have dark red eyes ... JaSa
  22. Hi We are not talking one, we are talking heaps So I figured it's cheaper to go mainstream (standard sizes)... Cheers, JaSa
  23. Hi What would be a standard tank size that comes closest to 30x30x30 (LxHxD in cm)? Another three I'm interested in are 45x30x30 and 30x30x20 and 90x30x30. Flexible in height from about 20 to 30 cm but depth and lenght I don't have much margine, only 1 or 2 cm Cheers, JaSa
  24. Let it soak and it will sink after a few days. Do this in a bucket with clean water and change it every day. It will look funny (new) for a while but once they start to feed on it, it will look nice. You will have to replace it every two years coz they love it JaSa
