  1. well hopefully it will do the same i don't really want to do a second double dose within a week
  2. what kinda algae do you think it could be smidey? mines black and it looks like a beard, make that lots of beards, it doesn't come off when you scrub it, its like its been glued on. How long did yours take to disappear graham?
  3. I dosed what i could see with a syringe, there is quite a lot and i prob only ended up putting 5ml in the water column. My tanks 90g and with all the sustrate and rock i dosed for 80 g which worked out as 10ml per 10g for a double dose. I dosed early mon morn and i aint seen any redness, still looks the same, thought it would be dying off by now
  4. i have both nozzles on the fx5 pointin up plus the airstone running so should be ok, all the other fish seem fine. The azureus is breathin normally now, but now he has dark spots on his fins and around his jaw that werent there yest, no idea what it is, i dosed the grow out tank with some salt and will leave him in there for a while. I was hoping i could put him straight back in the main tank as he is not top dog and cops a lot of grief from the taiwan and the litho and the longer i leave him out the more grief he's gonna get when i put him back in. Spots are weird, i have a dem that i got from tm in the grow out with the azureus as well as a couple of randoms. The dem had similar spots on him but its more around the bottom of his jaw but the other 2 fish don't have them. The spots have appeared on the azureus today so i am hoping its not some disease the dem was carrying.
  5. be aware that the lph they are quoting is for the canisters maximum output i.e, no media inside and not sitting below the tank, on most canisters you can nearly half that out put once you have the canister full of media and filter wool. The aqua one cf1200 is rated around 1200 lph max, but with media etc is rated at around 760lph. Aqua one and sun sun are great filters for the price and easy to get parts for the other one i would imagine would be a mission to find spare parts. For the price of the other i would def go the sunsun, you can never have to much filtration
  6. yeah it says that on my bottle to. Flourish seems to be the only thing that has a good success rate at killing bba, from the research i have done. I plugged my airstone back in after i noticed the azureus. He's still sitting on the bottom of my growout tank, breathing heavily, looks like hes just finished a marathon, i'll leave him in there till he looks better. Hope he pulls through he's a great fish
  7. I just double dosed my malawi tank with flourish excel to kill off some bba. After an hr i noticed my azureus lying at the bottom of the tank gasping for air. All the other fish are fine so i pulled the azureus out and put him in a grow out tank. He seemed fine this morn did the same wc routine accept this time i added the flourish. Could the flourish be causing this, has anyone lost any fish double dosing with flourish before?

    fx5 baskets

May be a dumb question but i have my 3 baskets setup in this order, bioballs in the botttom, ceramic noodles in the middle and crushed coral in the top. Is this the right way or should i have the coral in the bottom and the bioballs at the top?
  9. agree with tropheus, more stuartgranti than jacob. It is a shame about the peacocks we have, there are a few nice ones around, depends how fussy you wanna be i guess
  10. Cool, but i wouldn't believe everything u read. Every fish is different. I have a male taiwan in my tank(all male) and i wouldnt say hes docile, hes the king and he lets every body else know that. When your group gets to a breeding size especially the males will fight, there will always be a dominant male in any breeding group. They will fight to determine the pecking order thats just how cichlids behave. I'm not saying that u won't be able to have multiple males but i think you will have more success if you keep a large group. You could also try a group of male haps, in a 6ft tank u could have a dolphin, venustus, kadango, taiwan, electra,... pretty much any hap we have available. They are usually pretty mellow and would blend well with the fronts who are pretty mellow. Man wish i had a 6ft tank!
  11. Agreed, Taiwans or red empress would look cool. I would think you would need a fairly large breeding group so you could have more than 1 male. It would kinda defeat the purpose if you only had 1 male and 4-5 dull grey females
  12. +1 for www.cichlid- forum.com awesome site with heaps of info but as said bear in mind we don't have and can't get the majority of fish they do! Really need to know what size tank (dimensions) you are goin to get before we can really help. At the moment it's just a squabble over who is better than who as far as cichlids go
  13. Crikey i'm feeling outgunned here. They both have there good points and i'm sure you'll be happy either way you go. What size tank are you thinking of getting. I mean dimensions not liters.
  14. 2 ob's. Ob's should be bred with ob's and reds bred with reds. If you breed your ob male with your red female that would be crossbreeding, would it not? If you breed a lemon jake peacock with a eureka peacock it would be a cross even though they are both jocobfrybergi strains.
  15. hey pippin, I'm gonna say africans. For me the colours are far greater with africans, i have never kept SA though. Tank size, depending on what you want to keep, is like you say, bigger is better. It is important to keep in mind the footprint of the tank rather than how many liters. A short and narrow tank that is really tall may hold 400L but is not really suited to cichlids as they don't really need the hight. There is alot to think about, i suggest checking out tanks on youtube to give you an idea on what type of cichlid you might want to stock. Then we can help with you with what sort of setup is gonna work best.
  16. cool thanks angus, all the info i have found on using florish has been in planted tanks where the plants make use of the excel, but as my tank has no plants do i leave the excel in the tank till the next wc or do a wc a couple of days after dosing the tank?
  17. sorry smidez no credit on me ph, fri is cool. i'll be @ work till 4thirts but the missus will prob be hm drop me a txt when u know what time you will be in town
  18. yeah thats what i was thinking of doing. I did that when i treated the tank with metro. So a 250ml bottle will treat 250L. How long did you leave it in tiii you did a wc. Do i just leave it in for a few days then do a large wc or should i wait a week. I guess the longer it is in the tank the more algae it will nuke?
  19. If its that easy then thats what i'll do. Theres a lot of conflicting info on wether excel is a sure fire cure. I don't mind spending $60 on excel if i know its gonna work. but would be gutted if i paid that for somthing that may not work. I have no experience with flourish and as it is not designed for killing off bba i'm after info on how effective it is. Would you guys recommend spot treating or just dumping the required amount into the tank. Is it usually a 1 off treatment or does it require multiple treatments. Also, how long should i leave it in the tank before i do a wc? cheers for all the help by the way
  20. hmmmmm, maybe flourish excel might be plan a. Plan b will be pull all the rock out and treat with H202. If I have to go with plann b that may kill off the algae on the rocks but won't it just come back if i have some left in the tank, behind filters etc...?
  21. Well it has spread. I have small tufts now on on pretty much all the rocks. I am changing about 80% of the water over 2 wc every 7 days, i am leaving my lights off now and will see if this helps get rid of it. If there is no improvement looks like I will have to try flourish. Is this a sure fire cure or a bit hit and miss. Do i have to spot treat every single tuft or just get as much as i can then put the rest in the tank? I have also read that people have had success spot treating with hydrogen peroxide. once its in the tank it breaks down into air and water. Has anyone had any luck using hydrogen peroxide?

    growth rate

i feed twice daily with nls and my mate only feeds once a day and using a cheaper food so i put it down to water volume, i was just surprised at how much difference ther was in the size compared to mine.

    growth rate

Went round to a mates the other week, i sold him some of my males from my 1st all male malawi tank. I have some of the same peacocks/haps from my 1st tank in my current tank. I was blown away by the difference in size of my old males compared with the ones i still have. His tank is nearly double mine in litres. It was amazing how much bigger his haps were compared to mine. I know that fish grow bigger faster the more space you give them but these guys almost made mine look like juvies!
