  1. Looking good, how many small ones o you have left now?
  2. Im aware of both, lots of genetics and biology at uni. Do Flowerhorns naturally occur in the wild ? or are they purely an aquarium human forcedor created hybrid? If its the later, have they been released in to the wild by humans in that case?
  3. Everyones entitled to an opinion... Where would the world be today without a little gene pool and similar species mixing?
  4. I picked one up a few weeks ago, there were a few scattered around hamilton and auckland at that time in the shops. Must have been elsewhere too. I hope to eventually run mine in a cichlid tank, with hopefully similarly tempered cichlids. Salvini, texas etc maybe.. I dont know whether JD's would have the size, nor the aggression to live with a terror tho.
  5. He will have a go, i had a 6 inch senegal that had a go at a 12 inch fire eel. And also lost 5cm silver dollars, a resonable size, cause they are nearly completely round, to a 4-5 inch little delhezi. You feeding them enough food man?
  6. My ornate will try and eat nearly anything, chases the 15cm geo around the tank and tries to get him. He wasnt scared to have a go at the foot long texas cichild either. Although thats probably because the texas wouldnt leave him alone.
  7. Just a couple of days ago, he was sitting at one end of the tank and was only 2 inches off touching both sides! Has grown a bit! Time for a bigger tank
  8. Thanks, dont know about the breeding, but wouldnt mind putting some together one day to see what happens... Assuming we can accurately sex them i guess.
  9. Heres my fulla (fullaess?) not sure of sex actually. Just measured at 14 inches
  10. Apologies... He is a bichir collector
  11. Bichir - Mod Edit: Rest of comment edited, could be deemed offensive - Afrikan

    Cuckoo Catfish

I was at HHF in albany about 2 weeks ago and they had a few Cuckoo synos.
  15. Oh c'mon the texas and bichir love each other... couldnt ever separate them. Yeah hand feed them, beef heart, prawns, cichlid tucker. Heck my old flatmate left some old squid tubes and baby octopus in the freezer and they love it!
  16. I bought one, and i love him! Second dibs if he goes up for sale... I seem to be collecting bichirs these days, amazing creatures... Was very tempted by the jardini, great fish, but alas no space Hope he/she goes to a nice home.
  17. Im beginning to realise this, as i have until recently been a community tank person, with all the plants and bright coloured 'brainless fish' etc. Then i went and bought jack....the dempsey, and he is soo cool, you just walk in to the room and he comes to the front and 'talks'/interacts with you... The only fish in my community tank that do similar things are the clown loaches... i guess im tying to say that different people like different things, and each fish offers something dirrferent to their owners.... that sounds stupid, but you get tha idea :-? Duncan. Ps looking for a small female dempsey if someone has one
  18. Hi kim, Brian is shut on sundays... and tropical blues is in Tirau (30 mins south of hams) it isnt a big place, on the right hand side past the large sheep and dog, kinda hard to miss them as you head south
  19. thanks guys, would love to go on the trip, but ive got work that wekend just my luck that my 1 in 5 weekend should be that one....
  20. Can someone tell me when the next meeting is....please
  21. Ive always had succes in the past using the blue circle cure, ive used it on clown loaches (nearly everyone says this is a bad idea) and never had any casualities. I have had panda cory's in the tank during treatment and they have been fine. I have since stopped using the methlyene blue based cures on the clowns and have started using a malachite green (on recommendation of a good fish supplier), but have given two sets of treatment, three consecutive days at a time (six full doses in total over 8-9 days) and have still not got rid of it. After the first three doses they were definately only a couple of spots left, but still after the second set of three doses there are still spots. I'm now considering waiting a couple of days and giving a dose of methlyene blue to get rid of it once and for all. Does white spot develop resistance?? Anyone else have any suggestions, the temp is raised to ~28C, and the fish are completely happy apart from the occasional itch... should i leave them and see if they can get rid of it themselves now or treat them again?? Thanks Duncan.
  22. Sounds like straight foward mendelian genetics, with the colours, ie two genes and one being recessive, giving a 4:1 ratio of normal to pink, when both parents carry the recessive gene. I dont think that 'hybrids will be possible, theres not enough genes involved to get dimorphisms... remember the punnet squares.... even if you get a female dave she will have to carry the recesive gene if you are to get any pink ones at all, otherwise just the normal colouration.
  23. Hey im in hamilton, so handy to the greater waikato area...
