  1. Caught one of my cuckoo catfish getting involved in a recent demasoni breeding session. http://vimeo.com/user11688379/demasonis-breeding Think the cat was trying to plan how to do the swap. Enjoy
  2. Hey Henward, You will be wanting to use an open cell structure foam that has not had any chemicals used on it. The density should be 10PPi for the first phase and then gradually denser all the way up to 30PPi as a polisher which has the added benefit of being an excellent host for the beneficial bacteria you want to encourage in your system. I use them in my breeding vats. Check out this website http://www.swisstropicals.com/Poret%20Filter%20Foam%20Pricelist.html I've ordered a large quantity of foam for my set up and might have a bit going spare which can be cut to size for you, a hole lot cheaper than the FX 5 ready made filter cartridges, and I might add in my opinion it will be better quality. I've been keeping fish for 15 years and have always made my own filters but recently I started looking into the sponge filter, what can I say but I am totally sold, and not looking back. They are easy, effective and and great bang for your buck! Look at this article http://casb.okstate.edu/casb/fishchum/index.php/scientists-featured-articles/79-freshwater-filtration-novel-insights-and-practical-considerations Cheers, Greg P.S. a go pro underwater camera mounted in your tank at feeding time would be killer!
  3. Gidday Henward, Stick to the coarse sponge. Ceramic noodles are designed for biological filtration, many micropores, by using it as a mechanical filtration you are limiting its effectiveness. Coarse sponge is designed for mech filtation with added benefit of biological filtration. More bang for your buck. Ill have some spare bits of PORET foam in various thicknesses and densities arriving in a couple of weeks that can be cut down to fit any application if you need. Think its about time for an update pic of Brutus. Good looking formosus Cheers

    Poret Foam

Looking at ordering some Poret foam, I have used it before and found it the most awesome stuff especially when used as a hamburg filter and for setting up fishroom- http://www.swisstropicals.com/Swisstropicals%20Fishroom.html -amazing. Just checking if anyone has had any issues getting it here and if had any extra would people be keen on some? Thanking you in advance for your replies
  5. A lot of people that work in pet shops are not "fish geeks".I am sure the next time that staff member gets to have a go at a goldfish they will use what they have learned on previous occasions. I am sure we have all struggled on one occasion or another to catch that darned cat, i mean fish.
  6. As the title states anyone that has information and or experience with a water pump-Hailea HX - 4500 would be greatly appreciated. To be used in an irrigation sytem for a small green house. Many thanks in advance Cheers
  7. Thank you for your interest, I am a member of the Nigerian Royal family and have the necessary connections to get any fish placed on the list. Simply place $174 into the following ASB account 12-45345-4545##### with the species name as a reference. I look forward to helping you out. "Humor only!"
  8. Not cichlid specific but very interesting- http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/content.php?sid=1894

  11. They are the coolest fish. Very hardy. I have 13 year old specimen living in a tank in my home country. Named jaws obviously
  12. Heading up from Kapiti tom to check out the 5000l? native aquarium and then on to central fishkeepers club meeting. Are there any good LFS in Palmy? I am keen on Malawian rift lake species. Looking forward to it. greg
  13. I have just installed a wet/dry filter as a return for my rift tank. It measures 1m x .25 x .25 and is filled with bio balls. I was wondering if I could plant the top of it out in a hydroponic fashion. I have a heap of spatiphyllum that I could use which has been in the tank for the past 4 months. I would replace the top .05m layer of bio balls with inert coconut fibre as a planting medium with JBL clay balls. Would there be any benefit for this other than ascetic, such as nitrate/nitrite absorption? Thanks in advance to any advice
  14. Cheers Ryan, will be even better once i get rid of the "electric pale caramels". Think some of those OB`s and Taiwan Reefs will finish it off nicely.
  15. Just wanting to thank everybody for the information and help. Thought i might pop in a pic or three of the tank. Stocklist includes 15 Moorii 15 Demasonis 12 Poor quality caeruleas-buying by correspondance has its pitfalls. 1 A.Marlieri

    Tank Bracing

I have just taken delivery of my new tank measuring 1200mm x 600mm (W) x 510mm. Its made of 10mm glass with three braces along the top of the tank running the width. Any thoughts as to whether it would be possible to remove one of the end braces to allow for an internal compartment filter. The center braces measures 220mm wide and the two outer ones measure 150mm. Any help and advice will be well appreciated. Cheers
  18. Yes siree, planning to stock the tank with juvies with smallest species going in 1st. Its a pity, as the Zaire Blue is beautiful colour variation of an amazing fish.
