  1. Hey there, sorry for hijacking the thread, do you have some photos of your tank and setup. I dig seeing what people are doing in there aquariums and yours sounds awesome.
  2. A great read. Nice work.
  3. Everything settled down? Ar you looking to get some more Firefox`s? Im keen to increase our gene pool. I have recently setup a tank that houses Black Calvus, T. Moliro`s , J. Marlieri, N Leleupi, S. Mulitipunctatus , N. Brichardi, C. Moorii , and male Sulphur Heads, Chilumbas, Jacobfreibergeis, Marleri Yellows and Dragonbloods. I really would like the Moliro`s to be the feature piece along with the C.Moorii. We could do a group buy of sorts.

    adding leleupi

Hey mate, Even though they might not get eaten right away, smaller slow moving cavers will struggle to get food especially with fast feeding trophs. You would get far better results fast growing them in a spare tank for a few months and then introducing them. I'm looking to increase my leleupi gene pool. You got the hook up?
  5. My apologies Yes you are totally correct. Very probable. I hadn't read that post and quite honestly didn't give cam a chance to talk when I phoned him. Guess I assumed he feed only nls. That said there is a lot of info out there accounting how trophs guts are not as specialized as we think. If only you could get fish to feed from seperate corners of the tank.
  6. I can understand where Smidey is coming from, especially when the cause is an incorrect diet( not this case). Food just further fuels the flaggellates (bugs) and causes an increase in numbers weakening and killing the fish. Unfortunately the only way to effectively (cost) kill the bug is to get the meds right into the digestive tract. Hence the feeding.
  7. I think that there has been a lot of excellent points made in terms of minimizing possible further aggression and stress issues(water parameters). Cam is following advice from an action plan that I have spoken to him about. To stop feeding the rest of the tank now will firstly shock the fish digestive system enabling the internal flagellates to prosper. They will forage even more discovering the white stringy faeces(intestinal lining shed to remover the bugs) hidden in nooks and crannies. This is one of the reasons that bloat spreads. The reason trophs are so vulnerable to it, is their rudimentary digestive tract and extreme territoriality. To prevent this happening all fish need to be treated with at best (food soaked in a metronidazole paste) this will kill all bugs that cause bloat. (1 week) Or at least epsom salts to flush the digestive tract with liquid and expelling the flagellates.(this is only successful in treating fish that are not highly infected.)( 1 week) Treating the tank with metro is not cost effective and the tablets are rarely water soluble. In extreme cases I have used a liquid form with excellent success.(Very costly) The most important things is to stop the spread to the entire population. Hence the medicated food. I hope this clears up some of the decisions. Good luck Cam, Thanks Ranjit and Aaron for taking the time to share information. Cheers Greg
  8. Here is a short video showing one of our aquariums. Its 500l of pure happiness for me.
  9. That a great point. Inbreeding is an excellent tool in ones belt if you have specific idea or goal in mind. This is especially true for people breeding a species like guppies, where the offspring mature rapidly and you can see if there negative effects in the above mentioned categories. Breeding brother/sister over and over again due to convenience is something very different. Whatever you do keep a log and plan ahead. Keep us updated with photos and always remember this is a safe place to to ask questions and voice opinions.
  10. I totally agree. Buck the trend try source some new individuals. What type of angels are they I have a friend in Palmy that loves his Angels. He might want to swap. This way you breed stronger and healthier fish for future fishkeepers. Good on you for asking a great question.
  11. You would be able to add to the dolphins without any real issues. Choose fish that are the same or similar sizes. Ensure your filtration is up to scrap. Enjoy, they are some of the coolest AfricanC`s out.
  12. Are the roots in the main tank where the fish can get them? I had to move all plants behind the Hamburg Matten Filter for them to root heavily. One reason was that all the fish ate new roots and there was the food source behind the HMF.
  13. Good morning Binu, Good work on providing a healthy environment. I would look at turning on the filter. Water Quality is top priority. Living Discus will lay again. Dead discus lay no eggs. Just let them do their thing. See what type of parents they are. Chances are slim fry will survive. The success is that you know you have a pair that can be setup in a breeding tank where you can control the environment I'd that is what you intend. Id be keen on some youngsters when you get there. You have some nice looking discus. Good luck Greg
  14. Mine are smashing ît. I have gotten more and now run them on all tanks. Awesome Cheers for the hook up.
  15. Well spring is in the air, or maybe it is all the weather systems and good environmental conditions. There are 2 pairs with wrigglers, and another just having laid. Pair spawning up on the top left branch. Spawning tube out, this is the longer one, would that make it the girl? Girl ram after having build a nest on potted plant. She has cozied up with another girl, boys are still too juvenile fart jokes and all. I think she is full of eggs. Feeding frenzy. So far this aquarium is an awesome success. The more spacious design (fewer branches) seems to be more effective. All plants are potted and the base is bare bottom. I tried to create a feeding station on the branches as the Java moss catches tasty morsels for tetras. Maintenance is a 20% weekly WC with a mid week siphon of uneaten meat bits and debris. It beats watching the Block.
  16. Fantastic. That is awesome. Where are you based. All that is missing is a little tin to collect gold coin donations for viewing rights. Good work.
  17. Maybe you could swap the leggo for the the bio media David is selling. Bonus for both , he can have an excuse to spend more time in front of his aquarium building sumps out of leggo, and you can get some bio media. Stick to the ceramic rings as Bio Balls are really only efficient in a wet/dry setup. Not really efficient when submerged. How big are the Koura, a Hamburg Matten filter makes an excellent feeding ground for shrimp. Don`t know if the Koura would act in the same way. Good luck.

You might find you don't need any additional any filter medium. The foam sheets will provide more than enough beneficial bacteria. If you aim for a cycle rate of 2-3 times an hour you will have multiple Hamburg Matten Filters. I would suggest that you design your setup to ensure breaking the surface in every compartment. A hole in the return piping works well. Good luck mate.
  19. Sounds good. I couldn't turn up the opportunity of hanging out with my Zimbo friend.
  20. Sound interesting, whats the topic for the meeting?
  21. The sand in most of the tanks is from various quarries, rivers and beaches. A large amount of the driftwood is made up a smaller pieces in combination.
  22. Anyone out there using it currently? im reading really good feedback on it. Supposedly surpasses NLS in quality and quantity needed to be fed. It's got two versions of African cichlid food one for herbivores and one for omnivores. I would be really keen to give it a try. Please let me know if anyone stocks it. Thanking you in advance for your replies.
  23. Hey fellow forum members. I'm coming up to Auckland for a bit of a Bender next weekend. I'm always on the mission to increase genetic diversity of the cichlids that we have. I would be happy to bring up fish to swap for species of your choosing. I have availability of fry/juvies of pretty much all of the species in my signature except a few. I think this a great opportunity to meet fellow fishkeepers and to ensure there is a level of redundancy of great lines of cichlids. I look forward to your feedback. Greg
  24. There will be a few quite a few turtles after Boris hit the air waves.
